Celebrate the Past, Anticipate the Future

A lofty blog title isn't it?  Unfortunately I don't think my 2013 accomplishments and 2014 goals really live up to it, but you should start off the new year in the most positive light possible.  That's one of my non-quilt related personal goals this year, be more inclined to see that the glass as half full rather than half empty as my family tells me I'm most likely to do.  So I will celebrate my 2013 accomplishments and look forward to doing even better in 2014 You'll see when you get there that I well may be building 2014 on a house of cards.  (Well darn it, that half full glass stuff is going to be harder to pull off than I thought!)

For 2013 there were just 3 major goals

  • Finish 10 quilts
  • Start 8 quilts
  • Manage the stash
I finished five quilts in 2013.

Two of the five finishes were actually on my "to be finished" list.  There were 8 other quilts on that list that didn't get done.  But the five finishes this year are definitely better than just the three finishes in 2012.  Now that I have momentum on my side, 2014 will be even better.

Being a faithful follower of Cat Patches' 2013 NewFO Challenge, I started 12 quilts this year.

That's four more quilts than I had planned to start this year, which is also four more than were started in 2012.  I stuck pretty close to my list for 2013, only one quilt on the list wasn't started.  I finished two of the new starts this year, while none of the 2012 NewFOs got finished in 2012.  So even more momentum for 2014.

Applying the glass half full stance to the Stash Management goals is a bit hard, I didn't meet a single goal.  But I did use more stash in 2013 than I ever have before, so that's definitely a bright spot.  I didn't buy as much fabric as I did in 2012, so there is definite momentum moving into 2014 on that front as well.

The 2014 goals look a lot like that 2013 goals:

  • Finish 10 quilts (5 UFO's and 5 of the 2013 NewFOs)
  • Start 8 quilts as part of the 2014 NewFO Challenge (list is here)
  • Stash Management
  • Use 75 yards
  • Buy less than I use
  • Organize what I have
Starting the 8 quilts will be the easiest goal to meet.  Finishing 10 quilts would be a personal best, the most I've ever finished in a single year is 7.  But I'm hopeful, one quilt just needs the binding added, another is pieced and just needs a back, one other has all the blocks made, it just needs to be set.  I'm joining Lynn's "Something Old, Something New" challenge for 2014.  I'm not too sure about the something new part of the challenge, but I am going to use the something old part of the challenge to keep me motivated to tackle those UFOs.

I'm linking up to Confessions of a Fabric Addict's Goal's for 2014 linky party.  Stop by and wish everyone a successful 2014.

December NewFO - Celtic Solstice Mystery

Hard to believe it's the last day of 2013.  Especially since I've been sick since just after Christmas.  What I thought was just sinus crud morphed into a cold and I've been in bed most of the time since we got home from our Christmas trip to see the family.  Consequently, not much has happened in the sewing room.  I'm hoping the worst is past and that I'll feel more like myself my last two days of vacation so I can enjoy some play time in the sewing room.

I did find time to start Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice mystery before Christmas got so hectic.  That's my December NewFO.  Last night I did manage to stitch up 2 blocks of clue 5 that was released last Friday.  That was all I managed before the cold medication kicked in and my eye lids got too heavy to hold up.

None of the clues are finished, but I've been starting on each new clue while working on the older ones.

I've made the most progress on the 4 patches, there's another 10 of those piled in stack that aren't on the design wall.  I should at least be able to start assembling the blocks when we finally get to that point.

Looking back at this year, I've started 12 quilts.

Of those 12, I've finished two.  So that's 10 projects left on the WIP list (I don't consider a project a UFO till it's a year old). It's been a good year for starts in my sewing room.  Now I just need to get working on a few finishes.

Check out all the NewFOs over at Cat Patches.  I'm also linking up with Bonnie Hunter's Week 5 linky party.  I'm a day late to that linky, but that's better than never.

Other than some lingering congestion and a bit of a headache, I seem to be over the worst of the cold.  I hope that means some significant stitching time is in my future this afternoon.  That's probably the most excitement I'm going to be able to handle this New Year's Eve.

November NewFO - A Starburst

Thanksgiving has come and gone.  It's hard to believe that it's the last day of November.  Which means that December starts tomorrow and there are only 24 shopping days till Christmas.  Really?  Since that thought is really too scary to contemplate, I'm ready to put it away in favor of something much more fun, the November NewFO linky party over at Cat Patches.

The NewFO Challenge gives you permission to start something new so you can build up a pile of UFOs for all those other "finish it up challenges".   I've done really well this year, I'm 11 for 11 in 2013.  My UFO pile has grown to just 8, so that's not so bad.

The November NewFO started off as an experiment for one of my other posts.  I needed to make a mood board and had been eyeing the quilt along over at Little Bunny Quilts

I've always wanted to make a quilt of brights coupled with a black background.  Even better, this project would use up some left overs from a previous quilt.  Plus, I already had several border fabrics that would work.   So Starburst became the November NewFO.  Four blocks had been released by the time I got to this point.  I played a bit with fabric placement just to be sure the color schemes would work.

I had to dust off my paper piecing skills, which to be honest are just about nonexistent.  But that's the other advantage to making this quilt, hopefully practice will lead to perfection (or at least some measure of proficiency).  Background fabric had to be ordered as there was not any tone-on-tone black in my stash big enough for this project.  By the time that got here, there was just enough time to make one block before activities associated with the Thanksgiving holiday took me out of the sewing room.

All the points look so nice and sharp.  I only had to unstitch a couple of seams because the pieces weren't big enough.  It always feels like you are working backwards when paper piecing. Hopefully by the time all the blocks are done, I'll feel a lot more comfortable with process.

Check out all the other NewFO's over at Cat Patches.  There's always some amazing new projects to check out.

Plans

It's Saturday morning.  I've spent the morning so far just drinking coffee, reading blogs, and playing with Pinterest.  We have part two of the high school swim meet this afternoon, but the morning is blessedly empty of any "have to do" stuff.  I washed some fabric this morning so I can start my November NewFO sometime this weekend.  While I was pulling the fabric out of the dryer my mind wandered to thoughts of my plans for this week.  I'm off work all week.  Monday, I will be all by my lonesome for most of the day as My Guy as an all day "have to" attend meeting (I'm glad I don't work for his boss) and Drama Teen has school.  Tuesday will be baking day for the holiday and family stuff starts up on Wednesday, but Monday is wide open.

I really, really need to get a handle on the piles of fabric that need to be washed, pressed and put away.  I've been making slow progress on that front.  But that's not really fun, that's necessary.  The NewFO for November is to start the Starburst quilt along over at Little Bunny Quilts.  The quilt along is on block 4, so I have some catching up to do.  I had to order some background fabric before I could start, so I spent the "waiting" time this week doing a mock up in EQ to check out color placement for the blocks posted.

I'll probably play around a bit more before I make the final decision for the fabrics to use in the first blocks.  So a good bit of Monday will probably be spent getting caught up on this Quilt Along.

The ever efficient Trudy has finished quilting Mon Ami and sent it back to me.

Modified from Mon Ami

I love the swirly stars she quilted.  So making the binding should go on the list as well.  If I get that made and sewn to the front, I can hand sew it to the back while I'm visiting with family over the holiday.  So that definitely sounds like something that should be added to the list.

I will have some quilting time today, tomorrow and Tuesday as well as Monday before the holiday gets into full swing.  Still I shouldn't be too ambitious.  So that's probably it for my list this week; press and fold a little fabric, get caught up on the Starburst Quilt Along and work on the binding for Mon Ami.

What are your plans for the week?

October NewFO - A Puzzleer

Wow, it's the end of October already.  Just two more months left in 2013.  I've already started my Christmas shopping, so I've got a leg up there.  Still have lots of reports due at work, but progress is being made.

On the quilting front, it's been a pretty good year so far.  I've used more fabric than ever before.  Five quilts were completed and I'm likely to get at least one more completed before the end of the year.  My UFO pile has only grown by 6 quilts, so I'm up to a total of 10 UFOs, but more than half of those were projects started in 2012.  The increase in UFOs wasn't really deliberate, but I realized last year that I don't finish quilts if I don't start them.  That sounds like a "duh" statement.  Let me explain.  Once my UFO total was down to 3 in 2011, I'd only start one project and work on that one start to finish thinking that was the way to finish a lot of quilts.  But in 2012, I finished just 3 quilts.  Down from finishing 7 quilts in each of the previous 2 years when finishing UFOs took priority. What happened?  There was no pipeline of projects.  I've found over the last year that it's actually more efficient if I work on more than one quilt at a time.  Cat Patches' 2012 NewFO challenge was what helped me realize that.  So this year I made it a priority to participate in Barbara's 2013 NewFO challenge.

So for, I'm 10 for 10.  That's one new project for each month in 2013.  (It has absolutely nothing to do with the needle nannies, she's giving away each month).  So what's the new project this month? It's another one off my PIGS list.  Drama Teen had picked out a quilt pattern almost 2 years ago that she wanted for her room.  She wanted it made with batiks and she wanted it to look like a "rainbow".  Over the last two years, she's been picking out batiks for this quilt.  I finally got around to scanning in all the fabrics she's acquired and working up a preliminary lay out in EQ.

Pattern is Jigsaw by Alyssa Clancy for Lehmann Quilting

Once she blessed this lay out, I starting laying out the fabrics to make sure they worked and played well with each other in real life. From some reason my scanner doesn't work well with purples, I usually have to edit the scans in Photoshop to get the color even close.  Since the each block incorporates pieces of the fabrics from adjacent blocks, you need to be sure of your lay out before you start sewing.  The first pass at a lay out looked much like the EQ mock up.

The lower left hand corner needed some tweaking because the blues didn't flow right.  Then we decided that the lower right corner needed to be tweaked as well.  That dark burgundy in the corner didn't look right.  Plus DT wasn't trilled with a couple of the red violet fabrics in this layout.  So after a week of playing around with the layout on my cutting table.  This is the final color map for the quilt.

Not much different than the first map, but the bottom edge fades better and the DT likes the red violet fabrics better in this version. So with this as my map, I've started cutting and piecing the blocks.  Only three done so far.

Pattern is Jigsaw by Alyssa Clancy for Lehmann Quilting

You have to keep up with all the little "puzzle piece tabs".  Which ones go in which blocks.  I've developed a system of sticky notes and sandwich bags to keep all the block parts together with labels on where the block goes in the layout.  These blocks go together quickly.  It will be fun to see the puzzle pieces fit together as this one progresses.

That's my NewFO for October.  Check out all the other new stuff going on over at Cat Patches

A NewFO for Design Wall Monday

It's the last day of September, already.  Just three more months in 2013.  It's been a busy year, which may be one reason why it seems that time just flies.  This weekend was Drama Teen's last volleyball tournament with the Freshman team.  Just three more games before that season ends.  But she'll go straight from that to the high school swim team.  Then we'll start club volleyball in January, just before swim competition ends.  So 2014 isn't going to start off any less busy.

I've been in the sewing room a lot the last week, but you can't tell it by what's up on the design wall.  I'm working on the Log Cabin blocks for Back to Square One, as well as more half square triangles for the Road to Brenham project and triangle in a square blocks for the Christmas Angels quilt. So not much new up on the design wall.  I have finished three more Scrappy Star blocks this month.

Scrappy Stars is my oldest UFO and has been my leaders and enders project this month. I don't have room for the other 32 finished star blocks on the design wall right now, but this is what they looked like back in February.

The other block that is up on my design wall is September's NewFO.

2013NewFO

If you don't know what a NewFO is, you should check out the challenge page over at Cat Patches.  I had hoped to be able to start Drama Teen's Batik quilt, but we haven't got the final layout worked out yet.  So I looked through my patterns to see if there was anything else I wanted to start this month.  A few months ago everyone was making Scrappy Trip Around the World quilts from Bonnie Hunter's pattern (which can be found here).  I loved how all those quilts looked and really wanted one of my own.   Since my scraps are getting out of hand that seemed like a good project to start now.

Pattern is Scrappy Trip Around the World

I made one block to test out the instructions.  I'm trying to decide if I'm going to go truly scrappy or pick three colors for a controlled scrappy look.

That's it for both the design wall and the NewFO this week.  Check out Patchwork Times for more design walls.  Then hop over to Cat Patches to check out all the new projects.

August NewFO

The last day of the month seems to come faster and faster the later in the year it gets.  As hard as it is to believe, this is the last day of August.  That means it's time to link up with Cat Patches for the August version of the NewFO Challenge

I wasn't sure there would be a NewFO this month.  I've already started 7 new projects this year, but balanced out some of those by finishing 5 projects.  So my "to be completed" pile has grown by only 2.  But some of the projects started this year have only one block completed, so I didn't get very far on several of them.  I had definitely decided not to start anything in August.  Then Judy Laquidara of Patchwork Times started her Back to Brenham quilt along.  I just loved the pattern and couldn't help checking my stash to see if there were any cuts that had enough yardage to work in this pattern (it calls for almost 6 yards of the focus fabric).  Once I found a couple of cuts that might work, I couldn't resist playing around in EQ and came up with this:

Now I wanted to make it.  So in spite of my good intentions to finish up a couple of other projects before starting this one, I pressed the fabrics and cut the strips for the first set of half square triangles last weekend.  I haven't made much progress, just 8 HSTs completed so far.

I love the red with the black.  Not sure how much progress I'll make with this one, there is no way I'll keep up with the quilt along. It will get done when it gets done.  The one consolation is that it will use up quite a bit of stash.

Check out all the other NewFOs over at Cat Patches.

July 2013 NewFO

It's already the end of July!  How did that happen?  We had a lot going on this month with trips to my Mom's, My Guy's Mom's and then vacation.  Not a lot of at home time.  I knew at the beginning of the month that if I wanted to link up with Cat Patch's NewFO Challenge, I'd need to plan ahead.  Quilt number 8 on my 2013 NewFO list is Christmas Angels.  This project was also number 3 on my 2012 NewFO list, so I decided it was time to get it started.  I bought the background, red and green fabric for this project in 2012, but that was as far as I had gotten.

I didn't have a pattern.  Finally after fooling around in EQ for a bit I worked out a two block design that I liked.  I need 60 4 patches to complete all of the  #1 blocks.  I've got about a third of them made.

So not a lot of progress, but it is at least started.  That's the only requirement to participate in the July NewFO Challenge over at Cat Patches, is to have made a start.  If you have something new going on this month, you should link up too.

June NewFO

2013NewFO

It's the last day of June, so it's time to link up with Cat Patches and show off any new projects (NewFOs) that were started in June. This  month's project was first on my NewFO list for 2013, but I committed myself to finish 5 other quilts by May, so it got put on the back burner until this month.

This is Back to Square One, Judy Laquidara's 2013 mystery quilt which is posted over on her Patchwork Times blog.  Judy has been giving one clue a month since January.  So far, I've managed to finish clues 1 through 3 and complete step 1 of clue 4 .  So I'm not too far behind.  I love the rich jewel tones of the blue, green and purple used in this quilt.  Hopefully, I'll get caught up to clue 7 in July.

Back to Square One was the only new project this month.  However, I did finish up three NewFOs from previous months.

Sweet Treats was NewFO #3 in 2012.

The OSU Quilt was NewFO #2 for 2013.

I finished sewing down the binding on Calico Cats last night, so no picture of the finished quilt yet.  It was NewFO#1 for 2013.

So if I look at my "progress" with the NewFO challenge it shakes out this way:

January 2012:         4 UFOs to start
December 2012:     Added 8 NewFOs
as of  June 2013:    Added 6 NewFOs
                               Finished 3 2012 NewFOs
                               Finished 2 2013 NewFOs

Quilt list Status       6 UFOs (projects older than 1 year)
7 WIPS  (projects less than 1 year old)
                               5 finished NewFOs

The UFO number has only jumped up by 2, so not bad at all.

May NewFO

http://catpatches.blogspot.com/p/f-youre-like-me-you-havent-been.html

It's the last day of a very busy May.  We celebrated Mother's Day, took Drama Teen on her 8th grade trip and also celebrated her graduation from 8th grade.  I'm still recovering from all the fun stuff that went on this month.  Lots of sewing happened too, well except for last week.  I needed some recovery time after all the end of school activities, so I took a few days off to catch up on sleep and a few chores. By the time the Memorial Day weekend got here, I was ready to get back to sewing something new.

Back in March, I pushed a few buttons and ordered some yardage from Connecting Threads' Neutral Love line.

I wasn't sure what I was going to make with it, but not long after it took up residence in my stash, one of my friends from work announced that she would retire this summer.  These fabrics are just so her that they have to end up in her house.  About the same time, I got a copy of Patchwork Palette by Donna Lynn Thomas and found a beautiful pattern called "Gems".

After mocking up the blocks in EQ and playing around with the fabric placement, I came out with this layout.

Neutral Gems
Pattern is "Gems" by Donna Lynn Thomas
found in the book Patchwork Palette

After washing, pressing and cutting out all the strips needed, only 2 blocks have been assembled.

I'm happy with how it's turning out.  Hopefully I can finish this project up before the end of the summer.  So far I'm 5 for 5 in 2013, five starts in five months.

Not only did I add a NewFO this month, two NewFOs from 2012 were finished off.  The Sofa Quilt was the June 2012 NewFO.

Evening Star was the September 2012 NewFO.

That leaves 5 NewFOs from 2012, plus the 5 NewFOs from 2013 to make a total of 10 uncompleted projects from the last 2 years.  I have a lot of stitching to do!

April NewFO

2013NewFO
Hard to believe we are finished with April.  It's been such a cool and wet month that it really has not felt like spring.  It has been a busy month.  May looks to be even busier as Drama Teen graduates from 8th grade, so there are lots of activities going on with that and the end of the school year.

The sewing machine has been getting a work out as I'm down to the wire on finishing up 5 quilts that need to be done by the end of May.  Number 4 of the 5 made it to the finished flimsy point and the back got pieced.  It will get sent out for quilting sometime this week.  To celebrate that milestone, I gave my self permission to start another new project.

April's NewFO is from my original list (posted here).  Well it's sorta on the list.  I had collected a set of blue and beige fat quarters to make Debbie Maddy's Vienna Stars quilt.

This project was supposed to have been March's NewFO, but the more I looked at the pattern the less I liked it.  But I still wanted to use those fabrics, at least the blue ones.  So I pulled out all my block books, found a block I liked in one, then found the same block in EQ.

Playing around in EQ produced one layout in two colorways that I asked for comments on back at the first of the month (that post is here).  From reading the comments, I think the pink and brown version was more popular and that's the one Drama Teen liked, so that's the version I decided to go with.

I was a bit concerned with how bright the pink looks in the EQ mock up, it didn't look that bright laid against all the blues.  That's the one place where EQ can really lead you astray.  It looks just fine in the first block.

I'm paper piecing this block which definitely makes it easy to get all the points sharp and keep all the parts aligned. Just the one block got made.  It will probably be late May or June before I make another block, Calico Cats is the last one on my list that needs to get done by the end of May, so it will get priority till it's finished.

Check out all the NewFO's posted over at Cat Patches.

March NewFO

2013NewFO

I can't believe it's already the end of March.  Though I am ready to see the end of the winter cold and the beginning of the spring blooms.  However, once it warms up, my sewing time is going to take a hit because we've got some around the house stuff that needs to get done once we get temperatures warm enough that we can work outside.  But we are not there yet, so I can still focus on ongoing projects, all of which have deadlines.  Even so, I took a 3 day break from all the ongoing stuff to play with a new project.  On my NewFO list for 2013 is a Scrappy Butterfly quilt.  I've seen this butterfly block in a couple of spots before and it turns out that EQ has it in it's library.

The patterns that I've seen which use this block are all based on template piecing, not one of my strongest skills.  So I used EQs founding piecing option to print the block out so it could be paper pieced.  I also printed out the template version of the block, so I could use those to cut out the fabric pieces pretty close to the the right size for paper piecing.  This is a whole new approach for me, so it seemed wise to test out this process on a trial block and make all the mistakes on something I wasn't compelled to fix if it didn't work out.

Having managed to get the first section pieced, I was feeling pretty good about the process.  I did have to unsew a few pieces as they didn't line up properly, but I got a good handle on how to position the pieces.  After an additional bit of fiddling here and there, I finished the test block.

Not bad for a first effort.  I'm glad I did the test block, it helped me work out the process.  I felt confident enough to cut into the background fabric chosen for the project and make the first butterfly for the quilt.  There was only one bit of unsewing due to poor alignment. In short order the first butterfly for the quilt was finished.

Not bad for a second try and definitely easier then using the templates alone.  The back ground fabric is a very pale blue with a lot of white, it looks a bit like clouds, just the look I wanted for the butterflies.  The antennae will be added via embroidery before the blocks are assembled into a quilt.  The final layout of this quilt is still on the drawing board, so the number of blocks needed is still up in the air.  I've tried a straight row layout and that looks too static.  Something will eventually work out.  Till then, I'm planning on making at least 12 blocks, one for each monthly color chosen for Soscrappy's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Now I'm only 2 months behind.

Check out more NewFOs and add one yourself to be eligable for the giveway over at Cat Patches.  This month's prize is definitely the cat's meow!

Design Wall Monday - March 25th

Drama Teen heads back to school today and I head back to work, Spring Break is over.  We took a long weekend, did some driving  and hanging out in places we usually don't.  It was a relaxing weekend.   Not a lot of sewing in it, though I did get some hand stitching done on the panel for the Medallion quilt while we were just hanging out.

The Sofa Quilt went out for quilting on Tuesday, which left me with two projects up on the design wall.  Both need to be done by the end of May.  I picked the easiest one to finish first and made some good progress on both the blocks and getting the sashing done.

OSU Quilt
Pattern is A Day at the Spa

found in the February 2013 issue of Quilter's World

Just 7 more blocks to make and the borders before this one will be ready for the back and quilting.  The blocks I can probably finish this week, but not the borders.  Those always take longer to add than I anticipate.

April kicks off next Monday and I've not yet started my new project for March.  I was going to start on Vienna Stars, then decided I didn't like the pattern all that much.  I'm working on a new design that uses the fabrics I purchased for it, but I'm still fine turning that project.  So I bumped up another project that is on my list, the scrappy butterfly quilt.  The original pattern uses templates, which I usually don't have a lot of luck with, my blocks usually end up wonky.  So I'm going to use the templates to help cut the pieces to the right sizes, but paper piece the block.

So I studied a few references, watched a couple of tutorials, grabbed a few scraps and started on a test block to work out the kinks.  So far, so good.  I did have to unpick the second seam, I didn't get the third piece aligned properly, so it didn't look right when it was pressed back. Part one of the block is done, just 3 more sections to piece and then it will be time to see if it all works together.

That's it for my design space this week.  Linking up with Patchwork Times, hop over to her blog to see other design spaces.

February NewFO

The last day of February, already?  I know it's a short month, but still it seems like the first was just yesterday.  The end of February it is, so it's time to link up with Cat Patches and show off this month's NewFO.

2013NewFO

I only started one new project in February.  I have deadlines on many of the projects I'm working on, so could only really fit in one new project.  It is a project that was on my 2013 NewFO list, the OSU quilt. I only manged to get three of the blocks done, but at least that's a start.

My Guy and I met at Oklahoma State while we were both in school there.  It's the "other" college with a football team in the state of Oklahoma.  Drama Teen spent her early years in TX which has it's own orange and red rivalry.  We didn't think anything about that till one day she came home from school not long after we moved back to Oklahoma and asked, "What color are we?"  She was in first grade at the time and we were a bit puzzled about what she was really asking.  Then she clarified, "Are we orange or are we red?"  Then we got it.  When she was little DT wanted to be a vet, and OSU has the vet school, so her plan was to attend school there.  She wanted an OSU quilt for her room, so I started collecting fabrics.  She has long since picked another career path which would be best pursued at one of the smaller regional colleges  but since I still have all the fabric, it was time to pull it all out and do something with it.

Orange isn't really one of my favorite colors, so I've not sewn with it much.  This is going to be a really orange quilt, something way outside of my comfort zone.  But that's good for me right?    Since DT has switched up her career plans, this quilt is going to be a thank you gift for a family friend who is a big time OSU fan.

So just the one new project this month.  I have a couple more that I'd really like to start, but with a busy schedule and deadlines on most of the in progress projects, starting a bunch of new stuff was just not in the cards this month.  Hopefully, March will be more accommodating   Check out all the other new quilting ventures over at Cat Patches.
