Stitching Stuff: Week 11 of 2022

We forgot to set our clock ahead an hour before we went to bed last night, so I'm getting a late start on the stitching time post this morning.  Thankfully I'm off most of this next week, which will help me cope with the reset.

The week started out a bit rough, the weekend had been so stressful that I started the week less than rested.  I didn't get home till almost 8 one day this week.  By the end of the week, I was just so tired that it was early to bed on Friday night with no stitching time.  So not a horrible week on the stitching front, but not a perfect one.

  • 15 minute days/week = 5/7 days
  • 15 minute days/March = 8/12 days
  • 15 minute days/2022 = 65/71 days
  • Success rate = 91.55%

I'm still stitching more than 90% of the time, but I'm afraid that's not going to hold much longer. With the resignations in my group, my work load is going to go up for a while.  I foresee a lot of late nights in my future.  My goal was to stitch at least 75% of the time, I'll be happy if by the end of the year I've managed at least that much on the stitching front.

Switching gears a bit, it's been awhile since I shared what the Scientist in Training was up to with her embroidery projects.  She's been pretty busy with school this semester, so she's not finished much so far this year.

She's finished a couple of kits and then went out on her own to come up with those flowers embroidered over a shirt pocket.  I can't decide if that's my favorite or if it's her beaded mandala.  She does such beautiful work.  The SIT is home this week for spring break, the plan is to do a bit of shopping and spend a lot of time stitching together.  It should be a fun week.

Did you have time to hang out in your sewing space this week?

Stitching Stuff: Week 1 of 2022

It seems wrong to claim week 1 after just a day of 2022 has passed. But I did check and this has to be week 1 to get 52 weeks of posts.  But there are the last 6 days of 2020 in this week too.  I was on vacation this last week, so my stitching time was vastly improved the last few days of 2020.

  • 15 minute days/week 1 = 7/7
  • 15 minute days/week December = 11/31 days
  • 15 minute days/2021 = 271/365
  • 15 minute days/2022 = 1/1
  • Success rate for 2021 = 74.3%

I'm off to a good start for 2022. That year that was 2021 had a lot of challenges, even so it wasn't my worst year for stitching time. Finding time to stitch 75% of the time isn't all that bad, my worst success rate was 52%.  I'm hoping to do better this year at handling the stress and keeping my working hours closer to 9 hours a day rather than 12, which was a way to frequent happening last year.  I gave back 3 days of vacation and carried over another 5 days to 2022 because there wasn't time to take them. I'd have lost all 8 if the company hadn't increased the allowance for vacation carry over last year.  So I'm going to try to take more mini stitching vacations this year.  We'll see how that goes.

The Scientist in Training joined me in the sewing room a couple of nights this last week.

It's hard to believe it was about this time last year that she asked me to help her pick out an embroidery kit at Hobby Lobby so she could see if she liked it.  The answer was yes she likes it and she's really good at it. I smile now at how frustrating she found making those first few French knots. She'll turn 23 this week.  Not sure how that happened. She finished her graduate school applications this week. We won't see her as much next school year, probably just at holidays.  That will be an adjustment.

So how did you end 2021 and start 2022? Were you able to get back to the stitching stuff after all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season?

Best of Life in Pieces in 2021

This is the 7th year that I've played along with Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs Best of series. It's fun to look back at some of the high points posted on the blog this last year.

1. Most Views (400): Stitching Time: Week 2 of 2021

I'm not sure why this one had so many views, though it's one of my favorite posts from this last year.  The Scientist in Training took a few stitches on my traveling cross stitch project while we were visiting family last Christmas. From that she decided to give embroidery a try.  She had finished two projects by the second week of the year and hasn't looked back since.  She's been designing her own projects for months now.

2. Second Most Comments(23): The Oldest UFO

The post with the second most comments documented the finish of what was then my oldest UFO.  Picnic Stars is one of my favorite quilts. The blocks had been finished for years, but I could never figure out how I wanted to set them.  Having finally decided on a plan, it took still took me a couple of years to get it finished up. The post with the most comments (27) was my #1 in this list.

3. Most Link Ups for the 15 Minutes to Stitch (18): Week 1 and  Week 4

Both weeks had 18 link ups. That's one less than the maximum in 2020. But on average there were 13 participants who stuck with the stitching time goal for 2021, which is up from 9 last year.  Thank you to all the bloggers who stuck with me this year, especially since most of them were much better at blogging about getting in their 15 minutes of stitching time than I was.

4.  My Favorite Finish for 2021: Grassy Creek ( Fritillaria)

Grassy Creek isn't my favorite Bonnie Hunter Mystery, but there were several other factors that made it my favorite finish for 2021.  The colors are out of my comfort zone so normally I would change them for the mystery, but decided to just stick with them to see how that worked. I like the end result. Another reason it's my favorite finish is that this mystery was finished well before this year's started. That's a first.

5. My favorite family photo challenge post:  Week 23: Fire or Something Burnt.

The Family Photo Challenge started as a Father's Day Gift for My Guy.  I bought him a card deck full of photo prompts. We draw a new card every Friday (lately it's been a bit later in the weekend as life has been busy). We've had such a great time with this challenge. We didn't think the Scientist in Training would play along each week, but she enjoys it too.  It's been a really fun family thing we can do even though all of us aren't in the same place. It's hard to pick just one favorite from this year, so I just picked the last post for week 23, Fire or Something Burnt.

That's my Best of Life in Pieces for 2021. Linking up with Meadow Mist Designs Best of 2021

Stitching Stuff: Week 52 of 2021

We had temperatures in the 80's for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, it certainly didn't feel like a typical Xmas holiday.  Hope your holiday was full of family and fun. Ours certainly was.

It's week 52 of 2021, so this will be the last stitching stuff post for the year.  I like to close out my stitching year on December 31st, so I'll have the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 in next week's post.  My stitching week didn't go so well. I spent all of last weekend working on company reports, went to bed feeling really crappy last Sunday.  Woke up to a fever and with a number of Covid symptoms on Monday morning.  Thankfully it wasn't Covid, but I was pretty sick till Thursday.  All I did was sleep (and blow my nose) for most of last week. Thankfully I was feeling almost normal by the time Christmas Eve rolled around. But that didn't help the stitching report much.

  • 15 minute days/week 52 = 2/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Decemer = 5/25 days
  • 15 minute days/2021 = 265/359 days
  • Success rate = 73.82%
I at least managed two days with at least 15 minutes of stitching time this last week, that's better than how the first three weeks of December went!  All my reports are done and I'm off all this next week. My hope is I'll have lots of time for stitching this last week of the year.

My stitching time this week was all handwork, I did make a bit of progress on my traveling embroidery project.

The Scientist in Training has been home the last couple of weeks. She's spent a lot of her time off working on a Christmas present for her grandmother. She found some line art on line and embroidered a couple of dish towels as gifts.

She did 4 of these cute faces on one dish towel.

Then two strawberry motifs on another.  Grandma was very happy with her gift.  The SIT says a very sincere "Thank You" to Barbara who blogs at Cat Patches.  Barbara recommended the Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvey sheets as one way to transfer embroidery designs. That's what the SIT used for both these projects, she thought they worked really well.

I'm linking up with Slow Stitching Sunday this week to celebrate having a bit of time to play with thread this week.  You can link up below to share how well you did at finding time to stitch over the holiday. I hope you had more opportunities to play with needle and thread then I did!

Stitching Suff: Week 49 of 2021

Week 49?  That means there are only 3 more weeks in 2021. Hard to believe we are that close to the end of another year.  But for now let's focus on this week for my sanity's sake.  Week 49 was pretty good for me on the stitching front.

  • 15 minute days/week 49 = 5/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Nov = 19/30 days
  • 15 minute days/Dec = 2/4 days
  • 15 minute days/2021 = 262/338 days
  • Success rate = 77.51%

I lost one day of stitching time to a late work night and the second to the reaction from the COVID booster shot. I didn't have any reaction to the first two doses other than a really sore arm. That wasn't true for the booster. Thankfully the headache, chills and body aches didn't last for much longer than about 12 hours, it still wasn't fun.

The Scientist in Training has been spending some time before bed destressing from finishing up her last assignments and getting ready for finals week by getting in a bit of hand stitching.  This is her latest finish.

She did a beautiful job on this piece.  She wants me to help her make this into a pillow.  We'll do that over the holiday.  Hard to believe she's only been embroidering for not quite a year. She asked me to teach her some basic stitches right after Christmas last year.  She's definitely exceeded her mother's skill set.

Are you having much luck fitting in stitching time with the count down to the holiday?

Stitching Stuff: Week 34 of 2021

It's been hot, which is typical for Oklahoma in August, and humid, which is not. It's just miserable to be outside if the sun is out.  So I've spent some quality time in my sewing room this week, other than a couple of nights when I had to work late.

  • 15 minute days/week = 5/7 days
  • 15 minute days/August = 16/21 days
  • 15 minute days/2021 = 194/233
  • Success rate = 83.26%

So not a perfect week, but better than where I was the end of July.

The Scientist in Training decided she needed something to help her relax and after giving my long term cross stitch project a go, she decided to try embroidery.  I posted back in February on her progress. The more stressed she gets, the more embroidery she seems to do, so she's finished a number of kits since then.

Several of these ended up as graduation gifts for her friends. She's still working on kits, but she's also taken a stab at using her own designs to embellish clothing.

The model of an atom on the gray sweatshirt was a graduation gift for one of her chemist buds. The rainbow heart she did for herself.  When she was home last weekend, she brought her embroidery up to the sewing room. I sewed, she stitched while we hung out together. It's been nice to have a shared interest.

Stitching Time: Week 16 of 2021

Life is good when you can take Friday off and you have the house to yourself.  It meant a full day of stitching to kick off the weekend. I was definitely ready for a day off after the madness that has been work the last couple of weeks.  I was doing so well till we were late getting home one night (4:30 PM phone calls with the West Coast tend to not end at 5 PM CT).

  • 15 minute days/week = 6/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Apr = 14/17 days
  • 15 minute days/2021 = 101/107 days
Not a perfect week on the stitching front, but some weeks are just going to be that way.  It was nice to have a whole day on Friday to play in the sewing room while it was cold and rainy outside. Did you have a smooth week on the stitching front?  You can link up and share how your week went at the end of the post.

We did venture out on Saturday for a meet up with the Scientist in Training. She's got lab reports and exams next week, so a trip home wasn't in the cards. We grabbed lunch, ran a few errands and then took a bit of walk around one of the beautiful parks in Tulsa.

The azaleas were blooming big time.

The deep pink ones are my favorites.

The Dogwoods were still blooming. So pretty!

The SIT found a pile of petals to sit and play in.  It was a really nice afternoon, but too short as she needed to get back to her lab work.

Stitching Time: Week 8 of 2021

What a week!  Major deep freeze here with lots of snow.  It wasn't usual winter weather, especially for this time of year. But it can and does get really cold here some winters, so Oklahoma is better prepared than Texas. We had power and heat during the worst of it. Hopefully that's the worst of the cold stuff for 2021.

We worked from home most of the week.  My work day isn't any shorter, but I do get my commute time back when we don't go in to the office. But I do tend to work later when I'm home, so it tends to balance out. Still it was a good week as far as working in some stitching time each day.
  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Feb = 20/20 days
  • 15 minute days/2021 = 49/51 days
  • Success rate = 96.08%
I've only missed two days of stitching time this year so far.  I'm making good progress on projects as a result of getting in at least a few minutes a day. So it's been a good year for me on the stitching front so far. You can link up at the bottom of the post to share how you've been doing on working in some play time with needle and thread.

I posted back in January about the Scientist in Training deciding to give embroidery a try. She was looking for something to help her relax with when school gets to be too crazy.  School's been crazy, so she's been attempting to relax a lot.  Look at what she's been working on.

The Scientist in Training's Embroidery Projects

She's been using YouTube videos to learn any new stitches needed to complete a kit. Though she wants me to help her figure out how to make the  tassels needed to finish off the gray, white and green project. But she's done such a good job on all of these while surviving year 4 of her chemistry program.  She's been getting in her 15 minutes most days, it's how she winds down so she can go to bed.

That's it for me this week.  How was your stitchy week?

Stitching Time: Week 2 of 2021

It was back to work for me this last week. You'd think after being so well rested after 2 weeks off going back to work would have been easy.  It wasn't.  It really felt like going from 0 to 60 mph in a couple of seconds.  I wasn't ready for that.  How did your first full week of 2021 go in your sewing space?

I didn't get the best start to a new year of finding time to stitch.

  • 15 minute days/week = 5/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Jan = 7/9 days
  • 15 minute days/2021 = 7/9 days
  • Success rate = 77.78%
One day I came home from work, ate and went straight to bed.  I was that tired and was really not feeling well.  The second night we had to deal with some car problems and we didn't get things lined out in time for me to get in any stitching time.  I'll need to do better the rest of the month to get myself back on track with my goal to stitch 85% of the time.

I've had some company when I did make it to the sewing room.

The Scientist in Training decided to learn how to embroider.  I did a lot of cross stitching during Christmas while we were hanging out together watching British Baking on Netflix. She asked to try a few stitches.  Once we got home she decided to wade in just a bit more and wanted a small project to see if she'd like it. We made a trip to the local Hobby Lobby and found her a simple kit to start with.

She finished the project in just a couple of days.  Not bad for a first try.  She finished her second project yesterday.

This one took almost a week. All that satin stitching takes time. She did a great job on both projects. I'm pretty sure she's hooked. The SITs birthday was Friday. She got her own embroidery scissors (so she'd quit taking off with mine), a needle minder, and a few new kits to work on. The SIT is 22 and this is the first time she's expressed any interest in anything that has to do with needle and thread. We'll see if that interest lasts, but she's had such fun in learning all the new stitches that I think she'll stick with it for a bit, at least till school ramps back up again.

How was your stitchy week?  Hopefully you got off to a much better start than I did.

Stitching Stuff: Week 48 of 2020

The Thanksgiving holiday was a quiet one for us.  The Scientist in training got to come home for the first time in months. We all had the week off. So we got to spend some time just hanging out.  Naps were a popular past time with the college girl and I got to spend a lot of time up in the sewing room.  Thanksgiving dinner was a very small affair, but the food was good and we had fun.

Having five days off was nice, there was time to get caught up on a bit of housework, get the Christmas tree up and wrap a few presents in addition to getting in a few hours of sewing time every day this week.

  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Nov = 24/28 days
  • 15 minute days/2020 = 298/333 days
  • Success rate = 89.49%
My to do list has lots of check marks for this week. Just one more day and it will be December. The next few weeks will go fast.

How was your week? Did you get to spend more time in the sewing room or less?

10 Years at Life in Pieces

Today is Life in Pieces 10 year blogiversary.  It's been ten years of stash reports, design wall Mondays and connecting with some of the most creative, inspiring and fun people. I'd name names, but I'm sure I'd leave someone out. I don't belong to the local guild as they only meet during the week and this working girl isn't able to attend. But I've been so fortunate to have what I've come to think of as my on line guild. There are weekly show and tells, demolish your UFO programs, work down your stash programs, tutorials and my most favorite things the quilt alongs, BOMs and mystery quilts.

The blog has been a place to record not just the quilty stuff that goes on, but also what's been going on in the rest of my life.  When I started the blog Kiddo (aka the Scientist in Training) was 11 years old.

Mom (and Dad) spent a lot of time at volleyball practice, volleyball games and volleyball tournaments. There was also swim practice and swim meets in there too.  I have a lot more stitching time these days and I do not miss those o'dark thirty morning rushes to get out the door headed to somewhere for some sporting event. But I do miss the girl now that she's mostly all grown up and off at college.

While the SIT has changed a lot, my sewing room hasn't changed too much in the last 10 years.

Though it is a great deal messier.

Maybe because I have more time to hang out there?  We'll go with that explanation.

So thanks for posting such cool, fun, inspiring stuff. And thank you for hanging out with me, for all the moral support, for all the suggestions, and for all the wonderful comments over the last 10 years.

It wouldn't be a blogiversary without a give away. So I have this fat quarter bundled of Anthology Batiks from Windham Fabrics to help celebrate.

Leave me a comment about what you like best about blogging, if you not sure what to write.  I'll pick a winner on Saturday, September 12th and announce it on next week's 15 Minute Challenge post.

For those in the USA, have a relaxing Labor Day weekend.

Week 51 of 2019: Stitching Stuff

Wow, week 51!  Just one more week left in 2019 and a full week it will be with Christmas in the middle of it. I'm hoping it's a better week than this one has been. I've been out of commission since Wednesday with a very nasty cold. I finally started to feel better yesterday morning, which is good. That with the holiday prep, edged in on my stitching time.  How did you do this week at finding some time to stitch?

In spite of the cold and holiday preparations, I did manage to get in my 15 minutes every day this week.

15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
15 minute days/December = 21/21 days
15 minute days/2019 = 323/355
Success rate = 90.99%

We'll see if I can keep this up till the end of the year. Next week will be tricky as the plan is to spend time with the family.  However, not only have I been sick, so have several others in the immediate family. So at the moment holiday plans are in a bit of flux.

The last link up for 2019 will be next Sunday.  I prefer to end my tracking on the 31st, so the first report in 2020 will include my 2019 final numbers and how the first few days of the new year went.  You can follow suite or if you prefer to keep each week intact, you can lump the last few days of 2019 in with week 1 of 2020.

The Scientist in Training hasn't lost the joy of the holiday.  Santa has already been good to her, she did well in all of her classes.  Wishing you the joy and peace of the season.

How did you do at keeping up with the stitching amid all the holiday stuff.

Week 50 of 2018: Stitching and De-Stashing

Week 50?  That means just two more weeks left in 2018!  And they will be pretty busy weeks.  The weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday are the most difficult for me to work in stitching time. Is it easier or harder for you to work your 15 minutes of stitching time in the weeks leading up to the holiday?

As suggested above, my week didn't go so well on the stitching front.

15 minutes stitching days/week = 3/7 days
15 minutes stitching days/December = 10/15 days
15 minutes stitching days/2018 = 324/349 days
Success rate = 92.84%

This week was just really busy. This was the annual "girl's shopping weekend" with my mom, sister, niece and Scientist in Training.  I try to get all my family's gifts wrapped so they can make the trip with me to spare having to haul them with us when we come down for Christmas.  Between trying to get ready and actually being here, there just wasn't a lot of time for stitching and the stash report shows that too.

Fabric used this week = 0 yards
Fabric used in 2018 = 41.88 yards
More in than out for 2018.

Even thought the stitching and stash reports took a hit, it's been a fun weekend.  The SIT finished up finals and her last class report Friday, so she was able to join up late Friday afternoon.  She got her chemistry grade last night.

She got an A, by the skin of her teeth.  If you can't tell, she was very happy with that outcome.  She's still waiting to hear about the grades in physics and calculus.  She's sure she passed all her classes, but not sure if she did that well in those two.

I'm hoping to get in some stitching time this afternoon.  You can link up below with how well you did this week.  Hopefully, lots better than I did.

Weekend Stitching: Where Was I?

Last week was busy. Between work stuff and family stuff there just wasn't much time for stitching.  After spending the previous weekend moving the Scientist in Training out of her summer school digs, this weekend was spent moving her into her new digs for this school year.

This year she opted for an on-campus four bedroom apartment shared with three of her friends.  Her bedroom is a nice size, a great improvement over the closet she lived in over the summer.  They have a nice sized living/dining room, but the kitchen is pretty tiny.  Only two of them have moved in so far (both have on campus jobs, so had to move in early). The last two will not move in till Wednesday.  Moving in early was nice, we missed all the madness of no parking places, crazy busy traffic and packed resturants.

When we got home late Sunday afternoon, I wandered into the sewing room.  I hadn't really been in there since the previous Sunday.  So where was I?  This is what was laying by the sewing machine.

The gray pieces are Sawtooth Stars for the Inverted Star border.  The orange strips and HSTs are the beginnings of this month's Squared Away blocks.  The red and black almost 9 patches are the centers for the On Ringo Lake blocks (the current leader and enders project).  The wider white strips are for the first border around the Inverted Star Blocks.  Before I left the sewing room all the various pieces are were pinned and are ready for a good sit down session at the machine.

Since Twinkle Stars is this month's One Monthly Goal and it's almost the middle of the month, it was time to get those blocks out and back up on the design wall to figure out what's next.  I had planned to sash these blocks, but both My Guy and the SIT liked it better without sashing. Plus the SIT wanted to see how the blocks looked laid out in rainbow order.  So I gave that a try and ended up with this.

This works out nicely.  The only problem is that without the sashing the quilt is a bit small for the intended purpose.  So the plan is to add another row and column of blocks.  So I need another 17 blocks before setting this one together.  The Twinkle Stars is another college graduation quilt, but I've got a couple of years before it needs to be finished.  Plenty of time (famous last words).

That's it for me this week.  Linking up with the usual Monday morning linky parties.

Week 9 of 2018: A Trip in Between the Stitching and De-Stashing

What a week!  I was really glad to get to the weekend.  We headed out to visit the Scientist in Training at college Friday afternoon and stayed till after dinner on Saturday.  It was such a nice day yesterday, we went out to the Botanical Gardens for a walk.  It's still pretty brown, but there were a few photo worthy moments.

The butterfly matches her shirt.

The magnolia trees were blooming.  That was about it for color yesterday, still it was nice to get outside and enjoy the sun after all the cold and the gray of the last few weeks.

Now for the business part of the post.  It is Sunday, which means it's time to fess up to how much stitching went on this week.

In spite of being busy and taking off to visit the SIT, there was at least 15 minutes of stitching every day this last week.

Days with stitching this week:  7 out of 7 days
Days with stitching this month:  3 out of 3 days
Days with stitching this year:  59 out of 62 days
Success rate:  92.2%

I've got a business trip this week, so I'm not likely to get in 7 days of stitching.  Thankfully it's just a two day trip, so I'm hoping to only miss one day of stitching time.  You can link up at the bottom of the post if you want to share your successful (or even your not successful) week of finding time to stitch.

As far as stash busting, piecing the back for the Magnolia Mystery quilt gave a nice little boosts to the outgoing numbers.

Fabric used this week:  4.05 y
Fabric used in 2018: 14.59 y
Fabric purchased in 2018: 0 y
Net fabric out for 2018: 14.59

Still no incoming fabric, so it's been a good year on the stash busting front so far.  Linking up with Quiltpaintcreate for this week's stash report.

Here's the linky for the 15 minutes to stitch.  Hope you had a great week on that front.
