I've really enjoyed working on the Squared Away sampler this year. Mari and Angela provided such fun blocks in the sampler. But this month's block just wasn't working for me (sorry Mari and Angela). I played around in EQ trying to work out fabric placement that worked for me. I finally ended up with this:
Pretty much the same, but some of the HSTs got moved around the background pieces to changed up some . I don't have a lot of dark blue, so I had already decided to use some dark neutral scarps for this month's block.
Squared Away Sampler designed by Mari (The Academic Quilter) and Angela (Soscrappy) |
Both the gray background and the black floral batik came right out of the scrap basket. It was fun playing around with this layout. Though I tripped myself up a bit by cutting the double sized gray background pieces. I had to un-sew a couple of pieces from the rows and then restitch them in columns in order to fit all the pieces back together without using partial seams. Now that the first block is done, I'll know better with the next two.

I like what you did with this block, Kate! I especially like the gray dots in the background. Have you used that for all of your Squared Away blocks?
Well, I like your block. I’ve forgotten what the other one looked like. This will ake an interesting pattern.
the batik is gorgeous in that block layout
Oh what a fun block!! ENjoy your sewing marathon!
I do like your block--I did a quick look at this months block and I did wonder about it--but that was as far as I got --wondering--!!!! I got my new sewing machine and all my sewing stuff is unpacked a new iron and ironing board bought-(but ironing board needs a new cover as the one that came with it was not good-even though it was new!!!)
and right now the folding table that I did shop up here is being used for the tv stand--so no machine work going on right now--
enjoy, di
I love that your "dark neutral" fabric contains most of the rainbow! :)
Great change-up. I love that rainbow floral batik. I thought this block was a pain to sew together. But I got them done.

I really like what you've done with the block!
This months Sampler block is a nice one, but I really like your re-imagined block, too!!
(Google won’t let me sign in, which is so bizarre.). You’re doing some great work!
Oh, I really like this! This block would look stunning as a whole quilt, too.
Cute block! I love those fabric choices and agree that the block would make a great quilt. Sounds like you had a busy work week so time for some well-deserved fun.
I really like that colorful floral print. It really brings your block to life. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
Nothing like a great weekend after a stressful week. Your rendition of the block looks great. Hope this week is lighter.
Nice block! Hope you have some good sewing time this weekend.
