I'm currently in Texas, hanging out with My Girl and Queenie. I spent most of last week getting ready to travel and not as much time in the sewing room. But I did reach one big milestone. The quilting of Chilhowie was completed and I made getting it bound a priority so I had a second finish to add to my tally before we cross into the later half of the year.
Chilhowie was the 2022 Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilt. I opted to make just 9 blocks, the quilt still turned out to be a good sized lap quilt at 61" x 62".
The backing is pieced using the blocks from the pieced border that I decided not to add along with a couple of older pieces of yardage from the stash.
This is the second quilt I've quilted on my sewing machine. The first whole quilt that I've attempted.
The quilting is pretty simple. Just diagonal lines across the center and a set of 3 straight lines in the borders. The stitching looks much more even and straight in the later quilting efforts. I've learned a large part of quilting on your sewing machine is figuring out how to manipulate the quilt so it doesn't drag when it's going under the walking foot. I'm not in love with the quilting part of the finishing process. But now that I'm retired, it just makes sense for me to tackle my smaller quilts. So there will definitely be more walking foot quilting this year. I've already got my next project to be quilted picked out.

Congratulations on the finish! It's beautifully done for your 2nd quilt and your first full, larger quilt at that. I really like that the inner border and binding print are the same. Do you have plans for where this quilt will be used now that it is finished?
That is a beautiful finish, and the back is pretty too with that pieced border section. I'm not in love with the quilting step either, as I'm just not very good at it on my domestic machine. I can deal with small things like wall hangings and runners. I currently have a baby/lap size quilt that I want to quilt myself. But I keep procrastinating.
Hooray!! A goal accomplished in a fine finish!! Enjoy the week with your daughter and grandpet.
Machine quilting the smaller projects isn't my favorite part of making quilts either but I always tell myself that I'm saving money. Have an enjoyable time with your daughter.
Congratulations on your finish! Enjoy you time away. Thanks for sharing in Sew & Tell.
Congratulations on finishing Chilhowie, Kate. It is gorgeous and I love how you added the extra blocks to the backing. Pretty paisley fabric too. Have a lovely day. Hugs.
Chilhowie is a beautiful finish, Kate! I really like the blue border and the orange binding, and the quilting looks great. The leftover blocks are a fun surprise on the back!
Chilhowie is beautiful. I love your colors, and that paisley backing is perfect. I love the look of diagonal line quilting. I'm always happy when I have a quilt where it makes sense to do it that way. Nice work, Kate. You can be proud of it.
It’s just gorgeous Kate! If you can make an ‘L’ shape with a extra table on your left when you’re facing your sewing machine, it can really help support the weight of the quilt. Also, quilting in thirds (an Eleanor Burns method I always used when I quilted big quilts on my DSM) is a gamechanger. Good for you quilting your own quilts! You’ll be doing FMQ in no time ;-) Enjoy your time with your daughter and Queenie. My next-door neighbour’s Corgi is called Queenie, short for Queen Elizabeth, I kid you not!
Congrats on a beautiful finish! Chilhowie looks amazing, love the colors and the pretty, pieced back. Did you bring it with you so Queenie could break it in? Enjoy your visit!
That is GORGEOUS!!! I love the colors you used - its just striking!
glad you were able to travel - did you ache much by time you got there ? is that 6 hours from you or more?
Hi Kate, you've done such a great job. Congrats! It is tricky learning to shift the quilt to minimize the drag but it will get easier. Thanks so much for linking up to I Quilted This!
What a pretty quilt (love all the orange!) and congrats on using your walking foot to finish it on your own!
I am so happy to get to come back and revisit this finish and celebrate it with you again. Thank you so much for linking up with Favorite Quilt Finish!
Lovely quilt!!! The process of learning to quilt on your domestic machine takes time and patience, but each time brings new things learned and skill improvement. While I don't quilt anything larger than a large throw, I'm enjoying it more and more!
Great job. I quilt on my domestic too and employ all the tricks to wrangle the quilt: roll it up to fit through the harp/throat space, put a table (or ironing board) in front of the machine to support the quilt, I've even built up (using foam board) an extension around my machine to keep things on one level. Whatever works I say! Good luck with more quilts.
