Stitching Stuff: Week 1 of 2025

My apologies that the post is a lot late today.  Grad Girl and I went to a quilt retreat yesterday and didn't get home till late. I completely forgot about the post for today and pretty much went right to bed and then slept really late (for me anyway).

There's been a lot of 2024 wrap up and 2025 planning in blog land this week.  Hopefully this is my last wrap up of 2024.  I track my stitching time by year, so cut off 2024 last Tuesday.  So here's my final metrics for last year.

  • 15 minute days/2024 = 366/366
  • Success rate = 100%
I may never have a success rate of 100% ever again, but it's fun to say I've done it once.  All that sewing time meant I used 64.2 yards of my stash last year.  That's about a yard and a half under my record for stash usage. The year that was 2024 was definitely a good one on the stitching front.

This year has gotten off to a good start.
  • 15 minute days/week =  4/4 days
  • 15 minute days/Jan = 4/4 days
  • 15 minute days/2025 = 4/4 days
  • Success rate = 100%

There is no goal for stitching time this year. I'll still track it and  progress on my projects will reflect if I've been stitching or not. I am going to work on using up a bit more fabric this year. It should be easier to limit my fabric intake as I just don't have the budget for it any longer.  No written goal, but it would be fun to have a record year on the fabric usage front.  I'm hoping to finish the 6 quilt tops on my list for this year, that should help a lot.

I mentioned the retreat at the beginning of the post.  Grad Girl is still pretty new to sewing, her only project up to yesterday was a pincushion.  For Christmas she got a Villa Rosa pattern card in her stocking that would make some cute trivets she could use when she's baking.  She said that's what she wanted to work on at the retreat.

The pattern is Kitty Cat Snack Mat by Tricia Lynn Maloney.  Grad Girl worked on getting her 1/4" seam down first. Then she mastered the stich and flip corners. She still needs to layer them with Insul-Bright batting and a backing, the kitty will come out more once she quilts them.  But I think she did very well with her first foray into piecing.  I may convince her to make a quilt at some point.  She had fun and really enjoyed hanging out with the "old ladies".

So how did your first week of 2025 go?  Did you get in some stitching time or are you still in recovery mode after the holidays?

Congratulations on finishing at 100% for stitching time in 2024! That is an amazing accomplishment! It sounds like you and Grad Girl had a good time at the retreat. It's so nice that you can spend time together like that. Happy New Year!

You had a great sewing year, Kate! It's impressive that you met that 100% goal, and got so much accomplished along the way. Grad Girl's kitty trivets are adorable - looks like the perfect first quilting project!

What an amazing year for you with your 100% metric - congratulations! Love the project that your daughter started on - my first quilting project was also placemats - and we still use them today - so I think it bodes well for your daughter.
