September PHD Report

September felt like summer rather than fall this year.  It also went really fast. I'm not ready for it to be October.  We'll blink and it will be New Year's at this point.  I'm never ready for how fast the end of the year goes.

Now that the month is over it's time to take stock and make a report on my progress for the September PHD Report sponsored by Ms. P Designs.  My September PHD report looks exactly like August's report.

Another month with no finishes. But I made really good progress on several projects in September.

The Butterfly embroidery project saw some progress since I was on the road the last week of the month.  I'm slowly making progress on the 9th butterfly.  Since we'll be seeing family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, this project will probably see more progress before the end of the year.

My last Bonnie Hunter mystery project that's not been moved to finished quilt top is Celtic Solstice.  I pulled that project box at the beginning of the month.  All the blocks are made and two row of the quilt are sew together.  Just 5 more rows left to stitch.

Squared Away (Soscrappy) came back from the long arm quilter the last day of the month. The quilt needs to be trimmed. I'm working on the label with My Girl since the quilt will be a gift for one of her college buddies. This should be finished this month.

All the teal 3.5" blocks for Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter) were finished very early in the month.  Those blocks are being sashed to make the 7.5" blocks for the quilt.  I've been working on making more purple 3.5" blocks. About 2/3 of the blocks are finished.  There are twenty something left to make.  I put all the blocks (except the ones under construction) up on the design wall.  There's been lots of progress this year, lots fewer blank spaces.  I'm excited to be getting so close to the assembly stage.

The quilting of Glowing Hearts (Sandra Walker) has been moving along slowly.  The blocks in two of the rows have been quilted and one block in the third row has been started.  Fingers crossed this will be my second finish for October.

All the big blocks for the 2027 Guild BOM are made.  I've finished the blocks needed for the pieced sashing, those will be November's blocks.  I have all the sashing and border strips cut, but haven't started assembly yet.  That needs to get bumped up on the priority list because the quilt top needs to be ready for the November guild meeting.  Here's what's been shown to the guild so far.

I've fallen behind on this year's Meadow Mist Design Mystery, Marigold.  All the pieces are cut for the September blocks, but only two of them got made.  So I'll be playing catch up this month.  The October clue is already out.

September was another productive month. No finishes, but several projects hit milestones.  There is definitely a lot more color in my chart then there was at the first of the year.

With two quilts closed to finished, I'm hoping to see a bit more color in that top block of my chart for next month.  It's been a pretty good year.  Hopefully I can keep up the steady progress this month.

To Do List for the Week of 9/29/2026

The drive from Houston to home Monday was just over 11 hours. Needless to say I was pretty wiped out yesterday. I slept late yesterday, got up just in time to go work out at the gym and make a run to Walmart.  After lunch, it was nap time.  I just never worked up the energy to dig my computer out of the bag and get it set up.  So I'm a day late with my to do list.

Last week I was sewing from the road, without my normal set up.  It was still a pretty good week on the progress front.

To Do List for 9/22/2026

1.  Celtic Solstice: Continue making blocks ✔
2.  Marigold Mystery: Work on September blocks ✔
3.  2026 Guild BOM: Start quilt assembly - no progress
4.  Wild and Goosey: Work on teal/purple blocks ✔
5.  Butterfly Medallion embroidery: Continue to stitch ✔

Check marks on 4 out of 5 is not a bad week.  I ended up not working on the Guild BOM because I just really didn't have the room and there were plenty of other projects to work on.  I made pretty good progress on the projects I took with me.  I'm looking forward to spending some time in my sewing room. Here's my list for this week.

To Do List for 9/30/2026

1.  Squared Away (SoScrappy): Make binding, sew to front

I picked up Squared Away from the long arm quilter yesterday. I haven't had a chance to get it out of the bag and unfold it, but from what I can see it looks good.  So I'll definitely have another finish for next month.

2. Glowing Hearts (Sandra Walker): Continue quilting

No progress on this last week since I wasn't home.  I'm hoping to finish another row, or at least close to another row, this week.  Fingers crossed I'll actually have two finishes in October.

3. Celtic Solstice (Bonnie Hunter):  Assembly quilt top

All the blocks have been made. Now it's time to start assembling the quilt top.  I also need to decide how to use the left over border blocks. I'll probably use them in my border, I just need to see how many I have and what's the best way to use them.

4. Marigold Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish September blocks

The first September block is almost finished. There are 3 more chain blocks left to make, plus 5 of the star blocks. I'll need to get busy on those as the next clue comes out tomorrow.

5. 2026 Guild BOM: Start quilt assembly

All the strips for the sashing and borders are cut, I just need to start sewing things together.

6. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on teal/purple blocks

There are 42 of the 3.5" purple blocks finished. The quilt layout needs a total of 64, so 22 blocks left to make.  Progress is slow but steady.  I'm hoping that all the blocks are made before the end of the year.  I may have to bump this up in priority to make that happen.

That's my list for this week. It's a bit more ambitious then usual, hopefully I can make good progress on all the projects this week. Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday.

Sewing at the Dining Room Table

I'll start my trip back to Oklahoma in just a bit.  Not looking forward to the drive. I won't get home till dinner time tonight.  I've had such a good time hanging out with My Girl this week. We've hit all our favorite food spots, plus found a new place for brunch that has the potential to become "our" brunch spot, even when her dad is along for a trip.  We did some "necessary" stuff shopping and some just for fun shopping.  We did a lot of just hanging out and talking.  So it's been a good visit.

I spent the week sewing at the dining room table. Not ideal, it's not ergonomic, so I can't sew for long stretches.  Even with the restrictions, I did make good progress on Celtic Solstice.

The last 6 main blocks for Celtic Solstice (Bonnie Hunter) are finished. Now it's time to start assembling the quilt top.  That will happen this week once I'm home.

Several of the teal Wild and Goosey blocks (Bonnie Hunter) are now 7" sashed blocks.

That's a third of the blocks.  Another 8 left to sash and those will be done.

It wasn't a bad week on the stitching front.  I probably won't get much stitching done today since I'm driving home. But I am looking forward to spending some time in my sewing room this week once I've caught up on laundry.

Stitching Stuff: Week 39 of 2026

It's been a fun week getting to hang out with My Girl and Queenie.  It's been harder to find time to stitch on the weekends as we've been out and about, but I managed to get in some play with needle and thread even if we were out and about.

  • 15 minutes/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minutes/Sept = 24/26 days
  • 15 minutes/2026 = 263/269 days
  • Success rate = 97.77%

So it was a good week on the stitching week. I haven't gotten to all the projects I brought along, but the plan for today is to stay in and just hang out.  So I'm hoping to at least pull one other project bag to work on before I leave tomorrow.

Last weekend we shopped at the big stores, this weekend we hit a couple of quilt shops, a book store, and had lunch yesterday at a tea shop.

The tea was wonderful and lunch was really good too. It was so nice to do something just a bit different for a change.

How did you do at getting to your stitching stuff this week?

Update: The original post was flagged by Blogger as containing malware or a virus.  Two of my Stitching Stuff posts were flagged. The one common thing I can find between the two posts is one of the linky party participants.  I've removed the linky party from those two posts to see if that fixes the problem.

To Do List for the Week of 9/22/2026

Last week was busy with prep for my trip this week. In between trying to get laundry caught up and finish up the necessary chores, I did find time to get into the sewing room.  But the focus was more on prepping projects for the trip and not so much on actually using the sewing machine.  Progress on last week's to do list shows that.

To Do List for 9/15/2026

1. Glowing Hearts: Continue quilting ✔
2. 2026 Guild BOM: Cut fabrics for assembly ✔
3. Celtic Solstice: Continue making blocks ✔
4. Marigold Mystery: Work on September blocks - no progress
5. Wild and Goosey: Work on teal/purple blocks ✔

Definitively not a bad week.  I finally got the fabrics cut for the 2026 Guild BOM, which will show up in this week's list for sure. The plan for this week is to work on what I can. Since I'm not home, it's harder to work on multiple projects at a time since space is more limited then in my sewing room. We'll see how it goes.

To Do List for 9/22/2026

1. Celtic Solstice (Bonnie Hunter): Continue making blocks

I put a full block and part of the corner block up on the design wall so I could see pressing directions.  There are several partial blocks sitting by the sewing machine.  I'm hoping to have all the blocks finished before the end of the week. Of course that depends on how much time I actually spend sewing.

2. Marigold Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Work on September blocks

All the pieces are cut, they just need to be sewn into blocks.  I should get to that sometime this week. Not sure I'll finish them, but getting started should happen.

3.  2026 Guild BOM: Start quilt assembly

I finally got all the sashing pieces cut, now just to sit down and start assembly. That may not happen this week.  There's not as much space to work as in my sewing room. So this one may wait till I'm home. We'll see.

4. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Work on teal/purple blocks

The first teal block is sashed.  Just 47 left to go.  Making the purple blocks is my current leaders project.  This project continues to move along, slowly, but it is moving.

5. Butterfly Medallion embroidery: Continue to stitch.

This butterfly panel is my traveling stitching project.  It comes out when I can't use my machine.  It came out last weekend after our shopping trip because I was too tired to get the sewing machine set up.  I'll probably work on it a bit next weekend since we have plans to be out and about at least one day.

That's my list for this week. I do have some plans to be out and about myself while My Girl is at work. There's a coffee shop I'd like to visit and I brought a couple of books I'd like to start.  We'll see what appeals as the week goes on.

Stitching on the Road

This week I'm spending some time with My Girl in Texas.  It's still pretty warm here and projected to stay that way the whole time I'm here. At least the highs are in the low to mid 90's, versus the 100 plus we've had for weeks at home.  We spent Saturday shopping and but spent Sunday just hanging out.  Since we were visiting and such, I pulled out my embroidery to work on and didn't completely set up my sewing stuff.

My sewing machine is at least out of the case and is setting on the table where I'll sew.  I'll finish setting up today and start pulling out my projects.

The light blue bag has the bits and pieces of Celtic Solstice and Wild and Goosey.  Those are my two main projects. The Missouri Star Sweet 16 bag has 3 other quilt projects plus my embroidery project.  I hope to work on at least two of the other quilt projects, I doubt I get to the third.

My Girl has a cutting/ironing table and a design wall we set up last time I visited. So definitely not a bad set up. Other than I'll have to be careful to get up and stretch frequently when sewing at the table, my shoulder suffers when I don't have an ergonomic set up. So significant sewing time may be an every other day thing while I'm here.

I'm not completely on my own.  I'll have Queenie as a stitching buddy this week while My Girl is at work.

I'll get this posted and linked up to Patchwork & Quilts, as well as, Sew & Tell Monday, then finish setting up and get some sewing in before lunch.

Stitching Stuff: Week 38 of 2026

It was another long and hot week.  So definitely a lot of time was spent in the sewing room.  But I did bust out and spent most of Friday on the road.  Navigating both Dallas and Houston traffic in one day is absolutely no fun at all.  Needless to say, I didn't get much stitching stuff done that day.

  • 15 minute days/week = 6/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Sept = 17/19 days
  • 15 minute days/2026 = 256/262 days
  • Success rate = 97.71 days

Not a bad week. Too bad I missed a day last weekend when I didn't feel well.  A 97% plus average is still very respectable.  I should be do well this week as I have no chores and will have my whole days to sew. Though I expect a bit of reading will be part of my agenda as well.

To Do List for the Week of 9/15/2026

My sewing mojo dipped a bit last week.  Not sure why, but it was just harder to get up to the sewing room.  It didn't help that I felt crappy last weekend.  It wasn't a horrible week, there was still good progress on the to do list, but a few things slipped through the cracks.

To Do List for 9/8/2026

1. Glowing Hearts: Continue quilting ✔

2. 2026 Guild BOM: Cut fabrics needed for assembly - no progress

3. Celtic Solstice: Continue making blocks ✔

4. Marigold Mystery: Cut fabrics for September blocks ✔

5. Wild and Goosey: Finish teal/start purple blocks ✔

Not a bad week, but the one thing I really needed to get done, cut the fabrics for the 2026 Guild BOM, was just not something I wanted to do.  That will definitely show up on this week's list and it needs to get done or I'm going to fall behind on the one "have to do" thing in my sewing room.

To Do List for 9/15/2026

1. Glowing Hearts (Sandra Walker): Continue quilting

Two rows are completely quilted now.  I doubt a third row gets finished this week, but I should get at least one more block quilted.

2. 2026 Guild BOM: Cut fabrics needed for assembly

This the third week in a row that this has been on the to do list.  I'm planning to finish it today, so actual construction can happen next week.

3. Celtic Solstice (Bonnie Hunter): Continue making blocks

I've finished all the chevron components for the blocks. Those have been added to the center and corner units that were in the project box when I pulled it out.  There were enough of those components for 5 blocks.  I'm almost finished with the center windmill blocks, but the corner components are going to take some time. I just got started on those.  Just 6 more blocks to make and then quilt assembly can start. Not bad progress for just 2 weeks.

4. Marigold Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Work on September blocks

All the fabrics are cut, I just haven't started assembly yet.  Starting on those blocks was supposed to be my reward for cutting the strips needed for the 2026 BOM.  As that didn't happen, those pieces stayed in the project bag.

5. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Work on teal/purple blocks

All the teal blocks are finished.  They spent some time up on the design wall so I could lay out the 4-patch pairings. Next step is to sash these with black strips to make the 7" blocks.  I've started back on making the purple blocks.  I need to check on how many are still left to make before I cut more fabrics.  It would nice to have this project ready to assemble before the end of the year. Not sure I'll make that, but it should be close.

That's my list for this week.  I'm heading out this weekend to spend some time with My Girl. My Guy is holding down the fort at home. The sewing machine is going along. I'll get some stitching done, but I probably won't get to everything.  My Girl has a big list of things for us to do over the weekend, so I may not get much done before next Tuesday. We'll see how that works out.

Stitching Stuff: Week 37 of 2026

My apologies for getting this linky party up a bit late this morning.  I felt pretty crappy yesterday and spend most of the day napping.  I suspect seasonal allergies was the culprit there. We finally got our cool down and some rain, which I suspect was the trigger for the out of sorts feeling.  The sewing room just wasn't on the agenda yesterday, I missed my first stitching day in a couple of months.

  • 15 minute days/week = 6/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Sept = 11/12 days
  • 15 minute days/2026 = 250/255 days
  • Success rate = 98.04%

My stitching time goal is 75%, so I'm still on track with that. I felt much better when I got up this morning, so hopefully the crud is over for now.

To List for the Week of 9/8/2026

Labor Day has come and gone, it's supposed to be autumn.  Looks like we've got a few more triple digit days and then temps drop to the low to mid 90's.  Not my idea of autumn, but I'll take just anything lower at this point.

Staying in the sewing room is easy when it's too miserable to leave the house.  That means I did pretty well on my list for last week.

To Do List for 9/1/2026

1. Glowing Hearts: Continue quilting ✔
2. Squared Away: press, cut and prep backing ✔
3. Celtic Solstice: Continue working on blocks ✔
4. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish instructions, cut pieces - progress
5. Wild and Goosey: Continue making teal blocks ✔

Four check marks with progress on the 5th is a really good week.  Let's see if I can do as well this week.

To Do List for 9/8/2026

1. Glowing Hearts (Sandra Walker): Continue quilting

Last week I finished up the top middle row, re-pinned the ends and started in on the bottom middle row.  The middle block in that row is completely quilted.  I've figured out how to manage a few things so the quilting is going faster.  Hopefully I can finish this row and get started on the third one before the end of this week.

2.  2026 Guild BOM: Finish cutting fabrics for assembly

The instructions were written last week, but I didn't get started on cutting out the sashing strips needed for final assembly.  I'm planning to take this project with me when I visit My Girl later this month.

3. Celtic Solstice (Bonnie Hunter): Continue making blocks

All the pieces for the remaining blocks are cut, now I just need to sew them all together. I've made good progress on the chevron blocks, but still have more to make.  Any progress on this project is good. It's going to take a bit to finish off the main blocks.

4. Marigold Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Cut fabrics for September blocks

The scrappy parts are cut for the chain blocks. The plan is to get the rest of the cutting done for September this afternoon.

5. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Finish teal/start purple

Just a three more teal blocks to finish and then those will be ready for sashing and I can make some progress on moving the purple ones along.

My list doesn't seem to change much week to week.  Maybe because the Guild BOM and Wild and Goosey are on it more weeks than not.  but three projects are finished, 2 more are being quilted and 5 have moved to finished quilt tops. My to do list hasn't shrunk, but the number of projects in boxes has. Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday.

Weekend Progress on UFOs

If you are in the US, hopefully you are enjoying your Labor Day holiday. Being retired, it's just another Monday in our schedule. Though we do usually skip our normal chores if it's a holiday, so we feel like we've celebrated. Which means I get a three day weekend in the sewing room.

My priority this weekend was to get Squared Away (Soscrappy) ready to go to the long armer this next week. If I want it back before Christmas that needs to happen.  First job was to press and then cut the wide backing to size.

That was an all day deal as I had to fold the fabric two different ways to get it cut to size.  But that's ready to go. Yesterday I started prepping the quilt top.

The first four rows are pressed and de-threaded. That leaves just two rows and the bottom border to take care of today.  Unfortunately the black fabric that I used in the sashing unravels really easily, so there were a lot of black threads to remove.

That's a pretty good pile and I'm not done yet.  But since most of the blocks have white/light backgrounds, getting those black threads off is important.

There wasn't much progress on Celtic Solstice (Bonnie Hunter), but there had been good progress earlier in the week. All the 4-patch chain alternate blocks were finished at the end of last month.  The main block has lots of parts, 52 pieces per block. I had enough of the centers and corner units for 5 blocks, but needed to make the chevron units before starting to assemble the blocks. That meant I needed to cut fabric, so I cut all the parts needed to make the rest of the components.

I had enough of the orange/teal HSTs to make the block centers, but I still need some for the corner units.  I've made a good start on the chevron units, had enough to finish up two more of the main blocks. So this is what was up on the design wall by the end of the weekend.

One block is sitting at the sewing machine partially assembled.  Still lots of block components to make. I definitely won't finish all the main blocks this week, but I should make good progress.

Sewing time can be dangerous because it gives your mind opportunities to wander while you are sitting at the machine. My version of Celtic Solstice has been 13 years in the making. I started wondering if anyone else had waited so long.  Looking that the Quiltville Open Studio page on Facebook, I found two quilters that just finished assembling their versions in February and August of this year.  So I'm not the only one that didn't get back to her version very quickly.

Stitching Stuff: Week 36 of 2026

The heat dome seems to have taken up permanent residence over Oklahoma.  The whole state is in drought, some places have very severe drought. It's so hot and dry that the leaves on many trees are turning brown and falling off.  Some trees are almost bare now.  Based on the forecast into next weekend, we will cool down into the mid to high 90's, but have triple digits forecast until next Thursday. That should mean lots of sewing time this next week too.

I definitely took refuge in my sewing room this week, it's become the theme of my summer.

  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Aug = 31/31 days
  • 15 minute days/2026 = 244/248 days
  • Success rate = 98.39%

Not a bad year so far on the stitching front.  I've gotten lots done this summer, but I suspect once the weather gets cooler, I'll be spending more time hiking and doing more things with My Guy. Now that he's retired too (at least for now) he has more time to do the fun stuff. But it's been hard to want to do much in this heat.  He has plans for when it cools down.

August PHD Report

The big thing that sticks in my mind for August is just how hot it was all month.  Normally we get those triple digit temps for a couple of weeks. It was pretty much the whole month, with just a few days of temps dipping into the 90's. It was a good month for sewing, it was too hot to do much else.  No finishes last month, but there was still enough progress to do an August PHD report to link up with Ms. P Designs.

No finishes, but there was a new project started last month. It was a project I planned to start this year.  It's a quilt along that won't finish till next year, so it doesn't have to get done this year.  I've done pretty well at limiting the squirrels this year. This is my first new start since January.

Celtic Solstice, the 2013 Bonnie Hunter Mystery, has been on and off to my to do list since June of this year.  There was finally some progress on this UFO in late August.  It's my last unassembled BH mystery. All the 4-patch chain blocks are finished. Now to work on the piece heavy main block.  That's going to go pretty slowly.

The next quilt to go out for long arm quilting is Squared Away (2018 Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sampler).  This is another quilt for one of My Girl's college buddies. The plan was to pull a backing from the stash, but nothing I pulled worked.  So we decided to take advantage of a sale and buy an extra wide backing.  The plan is to get this to the long arm quilter before I leave to visit My Girl later this month.

Good Fortune (Bonnie Hunter) has moved from a set of blocks to a finished quilt top this month. I'm really happy with how it turned out.  The pieced border was definitely worth doing.  Now it goes into the to be quilted closet.

Work on the teal blocks for my version of Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter) continued in August. Just 4 blocks to go and I'll be ready to sash the 3" finished blocks into 7" finished blocks for quilt assembly.

The quilting has been slow going on Glowing Hearts (Sandra Walker).  I picked a denser quilting motif, so of course it's going to take more time. It's going to be worth it, I really like how it's turning out.  Based on where I'm at, this going to be a September/October finish.

All the blocks for the 2026 Guild BOM have been made. Only the blocks through September are shown in the photo since that's all the guild has seen.  I'm working on the quilt assembly instructions, with plans to start that in late September after the October block is shown to the guild.  I need to get this quilt to finished quilt top so I can move on to next year's BOM and have that ready to go for the December meeting.

Marigold Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs) is the new project started this month.  The August blocks are all finished.  This is my 11th Meadow Mist Designs' mystery sew along. I've enjoyed all of them.  The sew along doesn't end until next April, so I'm looking forward to several months of clues.

August was a good month. No finishes, but one project reached finished quilt top stage and another one is ready to prep for quilting.  A new project was added, but it was a planned one.

All the work this month means there's a good chance for at least 2 more finishes before the end of the year.  I'll take that!

To Do List for the Week of 9/1/2026

August seemed to go both fast and slow. The high temperatures did make the month drag a bit.  I'm ready for autumn temps, but I'm not ready for it to be September.  If this year is like past years, I'll blink and it will be December!

The last week of August was a productive one. My to do list was pretty short, which is probably why I got so much done on each item.

To Do List for 8/25/26

1. Glowing Hearts: Continue quilting ✔
2. Squared Away: Decide on backing ✔
3. Celtic Solstice: Work on incomplete blocks ✔
4. Wild and Goosey: Continue making teal blocks ✔

I'm hoping to do as well with this week's list, though it is a bit longer.

To Do List for 9/1/2026

1. Glowing Hearts (Sandra Walker): Continue quilting

Last week I finished the second block and got halfway with the block 3.  I've found a few tips that have made the progress go faster. Fingers crossed I can get most of the next row done this week.

2. Squared Away (Soscrappy): Press, cut and prep backing

My Girl picked out the backing fabric. I chose an extra wide backing fabric.  It's nice not to have any seams, but I will admit, it's not fun to man handle from a pressing and cutting perspective.  But I'll be glad to have it ready to go.

3. Celtic Solstice (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on blocks

All the 4-patch chain blocks are finished and I got started on the main block.  I've cut all the pieces needed for the chevron components and started piecing those.  I have enough of the other block components to make 5 of the main blocks.  After a bit of review and some calculations, a cutting list has been created. I'm hoping to get the rest of the pieces cut this week so all I'll have to do is sew the blocks.

4.  2026 Guild BOM: Finish assembly instructions, start cutting finishing pieces

I need to wait till after the September guild meeting before I start the quilt assembly, but it's not too early to finish up the instructions and cut my pieces. I have a trip planned to see My Girl later in the month, this would be a good "kit" to take with me and work on during my visit.

5. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter) Continue making teal blocks

I know the RSC color is purple, but I only need a four more teal blocks and I'll be finished with those. Once those are done, I'll switch over to finishing up the purple ones.

It's a pretty doable list.  We'll see how far I can get in a week.  Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday.
