2026 SAHRR: Curves

I struggled with this week's SAHRR prompt. Wendy at Pieceful Thoughts set "curves" as our focus for this week. Even though I've sewn curved seams back when making clothes was my main sewing room activity, it's been ages. Searching through the blocks in Electric Quilt, I finally settled on a Dresden Plate block.

I've made a Dresden Plate block before in one or two other quilt alongs. But I've never made one without a pattern.  After searching through my specialty rulers, I found two wedge rulers. Instructions for the 18 degree one were in my miscellaneous quilting stuff notebook, so that became my path forward.

I'm reasonably happy with how it worked out. The instructions were pretty clear about how long to cut the blades, but they seem a little short, wish I'd cut them a bit longer.  Live and learn, I'll know better next time I make a Dresden Plate. Adding the corners helped fill in all the empty space. It's far from perfect, but my projects never are, so it stays. It works well with the other blocks.

I'm pretty happy with how this year's SAHRR is coming together. It still feels a bit weird to just be making one block for each prompt, but it has made this year's effort much less stressful. Just two more prompts and we'll be done with the challenge for this year. Looking forward to this week's prompt.

Linking up with Pieceful Thoughts, Sew and Tell Monday, plus Patchwork & Quilts.

I really like how the darker print in the Dresen's angles creates a secondary swirling effect in the block. Your blocks are looking great together!

That's a pretty block, Kate! I like the "every other one" look with the alternating blades. The lighter blue dot fabric is a neat one. I think your Dresden Plate block was a great idea!

I love the deep shades of blue you're using, Kate! That is one cute, petite Dresden plate block!

I love Dresdens, and yours is beautiful. I like how your blades are shorter with the big center.

Wow that is pretty! I love the fabrics you used, and yes it works amazingly well with the other blocks. I feel the same - it is less stressful for me this year, and I am really enjoying it.

Hi Kate, I really like your Dresden plate block - it's really cool with the shorter stems and the large circle - just a cool variation :-)

I'm a total fan of Dresden Blocks, and love yours, too! It kind of went around the bees a few years ago, so I really came to like them. I think it's a perfect solution to making a curve when you don't really want to make a curve; and as always, beautiful fabrics.

Dresden plates have always been a favorite. They remind me of the round windows in the ancient cathedrals. Your variation is beautiful. And your colors are stunning.

You did a great job on the Dresden. I've made a few in my time but nothing recently. The SAHRR is looking good... I'm looking forward to seeing how you finish it off.
