Photo Play: 2025 Summary, 2026 Ambitions

My blog is mostly about the quilty stuff that goes on in my sewing room. If you are here for that, I won't be offended if you skip this post.

Since I've retired, my goal has been to do more photography and learn to do it better. I've been retired a little over 3 years at this point and I'm not sure there has been much improvement in the more or the better aspirations.  Looking at how I did on my 2025 goals says a lot.

1. Take more pictures.  Nope that didn't happen.  I only had 79 photos I felt that were worthy of posting, versus 112 from last year.

2. Take more walks, go more places:  The more walks didn't happen, nor did I go more places. But I do think I used my cell phone more this year to take photos while we were out and about.

3. Continue to learn my camera functions: Major fail, no effort at all on this point.

4. Keep studying photography via books/videos: Another major fail, I didn't read any books on photography in 2025.

Before writing up this year's ambitions, I reviewed the last 3 year's photos, with My Guy's help and picked one that stood out for each year. Maybe not the best technical photo of the year, but that the one that elicited a response from both of us.

2023

Canon 70D w/Tamron 18-400 mm lens

2024

Canon 70D w/Tamron 18-400 mm lens

2025

Canon 70D w/Tamron 18-400 mm lens

None of these three are my typical subjects. The Tamron lens is probably my most versatile, so it's the one in use most of the time.  What else did my review show?  My shots from 2024 included a lot of, "what if I tried this". There was almost none of that last year. Photos of flowers and butterflies were more than 90% of my photos Those are my favorite subjects. They aren't bad subjects, but maybe not the most interesting.

So what's the plan for 2026?

1. Take a photo every week. Hopefully that will encourage me to look harder for interesting subjects.

2. Study both photography techniques and my camera operation.  One photography book a month, a chapter on my reference books on the cameras.

I'm going to leave it at just two for this year.  Hopefully both will get me taking more and better photos.

To Do List for the Week of 01/27/2026

It's definitely winter here.  Our low has been -1 F for the last couple of days.  We won't warm up much, barely above freezing most days.  Definitely good days to just stay home and stitch.  I mostly did that last week, so my to do list got a lot of attention.

To Do List for 01/20/26

1. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish April block ✔

2. Kate's Choice: Assemble fourth row

3. SAHRR: Make block for first prompt

4. Scenic Waypoint: Cut fabrics - progress

5. Magnificent Mystery: Work on Dec/Jan clues

6. Wild and Goosey: Work on blue blocks

I didn't check off all everything on my to do list, still it was a good week on the progress front. I made enough progress on the Guild BOM and the Magnificent Mystery that they don't show up on this week's list.

To Do List for 01/27/2026

1. Kate's Choice: Assemble 5th row

I finished up the fourth row last week, but I'm going assemble rows 5 and 6, then sew those together and then sew the top and bottom together. I figure that will be easier to do on my home sewing machine. We'll see.

2. SAHRR (Quilting Gail): Make block for second prompt

It's weird to be caught up, usually I'm still working on the first prompt. I still feel like I'm cheating a bit, but I do like how my SAHRR is coming along.

3. Scenic Waypoint (Meadow Mist Designs): Continue cutting fabrics, start assembly of hourglass units.

Half of the fat quarters are cut.  All the background pieces for the next week are cut.  My plan is to finish cutting the fat quarters, then I'll go back and catch up on the background cutting. Doing it this way means I can start on this week's step while I finish cutting the background. Hopefully that strategy will keep me on schedule with the assembly instructions.

4. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Work on blue blocks

I've made a few blue blocks, but have a lot more to make.  Soscrappy hasn't posted the color for February yet, so unless it's teal or purple, I'll keep working on the blue blocks for another month.

That's my list for this week. Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday.

2026 SHARR: Hourglass Blocks

The week 1 prompt for the 2026 SAHRR (Quilting Gail) was set as hourglass blocks by Songbird Designs.  I'm doing a single block for each prompt. After playing around in Electric Quilt for a bit, here's what I came up with.

Just a simple block with 4 hourglasses. The fabric placement makes the design.  I had to work slowly to make sure I could get fabric into the right spots when I assembled the four squares.

I'm not sure yet where the block is going to fit with my center, so for now it's just up on the design wall in the first postion.

I'm ready for prompt #2. Linking up at Songbird Designs for the SAHRR prompt one and my usual Monday linky parties: Patchwork & Quilts and Sew and Tell Monday

Stitching Stuff: Week 4 of 2026

It's been cold, but that polar vortex struck yesterday, now it's really, really cold.  Snow started falling Friday night around 10 PM. The first round of snow left about 3" to 4" of snow depending on where you are in the county. The second round kicked off Saturday afternoon and is supposed to run till midmorning. So we may see another 6" to 8" before it tapers off this afternoon.   It wasn't exactly warm going into this storm, so it wasn't too hard to find time to hang out in the sewing room this week.

  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Jan = 24/24 days
  • 15 minute days/2026 = 24/24 days
  • Success rate = 100%

Keeping a success rate of 100% in January isn't usually too hard. But February is just around the corner, and that's a busier month for me. We'll see how long I can keep the streak going.

How are you doing at fitting in some stitching time?

Photo Play: November and December 2025

November was busy and December was too. I had a hard time getting into the holiday season last year, so just didn't get my camera out like I normally do.  Since there weren't very many photos, it seemed best to just combine the two months.

Compared to all the I Phone shots from October, all the November photos were shot with the Canon 70D with the Tamron 80-400 mm telephoto lens.  All the photos come from an early November walk along the local walking trail. We don't see peak fall colors here till early to mid November. The trees change just as the autumn winds pick up. Our fall colors don't last long.

The days were still pretty warm in early November. A few butterflies, like this Common Buckeye were still out and about.

The only interesting photo from December was the one I took with the I Phone 12 of our small Christmas Tree.

I didn't use a special filter (at least I don't think I did, the I Phone sometimes does it's own thing).  I like the colored streaks from some of the lights.

That's the last of my best of photos from 2025.  I'll take a look back and see how what made the cut fits with the photography goals for 2025.  I know I didn't do as much as I had hoped, but there some nice shots from last year.  That's enough.

To Do List for the Week of 01/20/2026

It's been bitterly cold this week. It's great sewing weather, but not so great for much of anything else.  It certainly kept me in the sewing room.  That made last week's to do list look a little short.

To Do List for 1/13/2026

1. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish March, start April blocks ✔

2. Kate's Choice: Assemble third row ✔

3. Magnificent Mystery: Work on Nov/Dec/Jan clues ✔

4. Wild and Goosey: Finish green blocks, start on blue ✔

Definitely a productive week!  Can I do the same this week? Maybe, maybe not. Two quilt alongs really get going this week, so that's going to be challenging. Thankfully, after this week, one to do item should drop off for a couple of weeks.

To Do List for 1/20/2026

1. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish April block

Just a couple of seams to stitch and April will be a finished block. I've been working on the instructions for May.  The plan is to get the instructions for the next three blocks finished, then cut all three at the same time. That will probably happen sometime in February.

2. Kate's Choice: Assemble fourth row

The third row is assembled, but hasn't been sewn to the the first two.  It's getting easier to assemble the rows, I've learned a few tricks to make the sewing go more smoothly.  Definitely have some thoughts on how to do this differently next time.  This project won't be done by the end of the month, but I'm making good progress and that's what counts for now.

3. SAHRR (Quilting Gail): Make block for first prompt

The first prompt comes out on Wednesday.  I decided just to make a sampler with this year's prompts, rather than rounds. Sewing at a frantic pace can be fun, I just wasn't up for it this year.  Hopefully, I'll still be happy with the final quilt.

4. Scenic Waypoint (Meadow Mist Designs): Cut fabrics

The throw sized quilt only needs 10 fat quarters and the fat quarter set I chose has 20.  These 10 made the cut. Now to start cutting.

5. Magnificent Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Work on Dec/Jan clues

The November clue was finished off last week and good progress has been made on the December and January clues.  I'm looking forward to seeing how all these components come together in the finished quilt.

6. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Work on blue blocks

All the green blocks needed for this project are finished.  I still need to assemble these into 4 patches, but I'll wait till green comes up as the RSC color to do that.  I need lots of blue blocks yet, so I'll be working on these a lot this year.

That's the list for this week. Definitely more ambitious than last week's list.  Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday

Stitching to the Plan?

Two weeks of January gone and two weeks left in the month.  It hasn't been a bad start to the year.  My hardest commitment to stick to is moving some of my quilt tops into finished quilts, with me doing the quilting on a number of them.  I stuck with that plan this week and managed to assemble row 3 of Kate's Choice.

There are 6 rows in this project, so I'm half way done with row assembly.  It will be a challenge this week to switch to quilting as late night sew is on Thursday, not Tuesday.  I just have to convince myself to switch over to the walking foot on Wednesday.  That may be hard as the SAHRR first prompt comes out on Wednesday.

I went off script by selecting fabric for a project that wasn't on my plan for 2026.

Meadow Mist Designs is sponsoring a Stash Busting Quilt Along starting in another week.  Cheryl's Scenic Waypoint pattern is just sitting on my computer and I certainly have the stash.  The colorful fat quarter bundle is Quilter's Candy from Connecting Threads and so is the black I've chosen for the background.  I'm not sure how old the fat quarter bundle is. The copyright on the selvage says 2011. It could be that old. Definitely time to use it in a project. I only need 10 of the fat quarters for the throw size quilt, so I still have a bit of culling to do before we start cutting next week.

Stitching Stuff: Week 3 of 2026

January is more than half over. But it doesn't seem to be going as quickly as it went last year. I like a slow start to the year.  We've not had snow or ice, but it's been cold with a biting wind.  Definitely makes you want to stay home and just sew.  Which is such a hardship, right?  The weather has definitely been more conductive to more sewing time.

  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Jan = 17/17 days
  • 15 minute days/2026 = 17/17 days
  • Success rate = 100%

It's been a pretty good month so far on the stitching front.  I may not be staying on track with all my projects, but I've seen good progress so far on most of them.

Has the new year been better or worse for you on the stitching front?

Photo Play: October 2025

It's been a while since my last Photo Play post.  I need to catch up on what last year's photography looked like before I decide my photographic direction for 2026. The plan is to review and wrap up last year's efforts before the end of this month.

Life was busy in November and December last year. After spending the last week of October in Houston with My Girl, we were back down there the last week of Thanksgiving.  Which meant I was really busy catching up at home and didn't take much time to look over my photographs.  I wasn't sure there would be anything to post, I couldn't remember if I'd taken much of anything. But looking back, we took a trip to Eureka Springs, AR early in the month.  I didn't use my big camera much, but the I-Phone got a work out.

Fountain in Downtown Eureka Springs

Arkansas had the same warm autumn we did, things were still really green and blooming the first week of October.

Some leaves were changing colors, you could find a few on the ground here and there.

While we were in Arkansas, we took a trip over to War Eagle Mill. It's a working mill and they grind their own flour. During Covid when bread making took off, the only place we could find bread flour was to order it directly from this mill.  My Guy stocked up while we were there and we took a walk around the grounds. The mill wheel is driven by War Eagle Creek. Around one side of the mill, I found this poor fella. (Taken with a Canon 70D/Tamron 18-400 mm telephoto lens).  Makes you take that warning sign just a bit more seriously doesn't it?

We also took a day to hike the Leatherwood Lake Trial.  (Canon 70D/Tamron 18-400 mm telephoto lens)

My Guy normally carves a couple of pumpkins before Halloween.  They were sitting in the entry way for a couple of days.  Have you every looked up close at the texture of a pumpkin?  (Canon 70D/Sigma 105 mm macro lens)

Just to show how wacky the weather was in Oklahoma this fall, the following picture was taken in late October. The roses were still blooming and the Monarchs hadn't made it all the way south just yet. Taken with my I-Phone 12.

My photos from October look more like spring than autumn. That's just how it was this year. If I have a favorite, its the last photo. But not a bad effort for the month.  The I Phone camera works pretty well.  There wouldn't be so many nice photos, if my only camera was the DSLR.

Getting Started on the 2026 SAHRR

I  wasn't going to play along with the 2026 SAHRR hosted by Quilting Gail.

I had so many new starts last year and so few finishes, that my project list is longer than it's ever been.  So why add another project? Especially when I was already so far behind on the projects started in the last quarter of 2025. It's such a fun challenge and I've loved all the quilts that have come out of it.  What if I used fabric left over from previous projects? (This is why my list is so long, using up my stash is always enough justification to start something new). I found the fabric pretty quickly.

This older Batik line from Timeless Treasures was purchased as part of a kit, but was used in a completely different project a couple of years ago. There's not a lot of yardage, but maybe I could make this work?  Was there a background fabric that would work? Yes, but there's not a lot. Some of my previous SAHRR's used a lot of background.  So limited fabric was a challenge. Could this still work?

Looking back at the 2026 SAHRR Quilt Parade provided some inspiration and a way to deal with the limited fabric. Several of the designers made blocks, not rounds of borders for last year's SAHRR. Using Electric quilt, a design using 6 blocks arranged around a center block developed. Some fabric may need to be added for the final border, but I can work with that. Here's my center block:

Using left overs is challenging because you are limited in yardage, so you have to use what you have. Even though this wasn't my first choice of fabrics, it still turned out nicely.  This block is 36" X 36", so it will definitely be the focus of the quilt.  The pattern for this star came from Quilting Jetgirl's Diatom pattern, it's block 9.  The original block finished at 18", so I had to double the size of the pieces to enlarge the block. The only tricky part was the flying geese and that worked out once I played around with a few scraps to get the size of the "geese" right.

I'm excited to get the first prompt and see what block develops from that. But before we get to that point, I'm going to check out all the other center blocks over at Quilting Gail's kick off post.

To Do List for the Week of 01/13/2026

We'll be halfway through January towards the end of this week. It certainly does seem like time has sped up the last few years.  Maybe I just have more stuff to do?  I definitely did a lot on my to do list for last week.

To Do List for 1/06/2026

1. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish February, start March ✔

2. Kate's Choice: Assemble second row

3. SAHRR: Finish center block

4. Magnificent Mystery: Work on Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan clues

5. Wild and Goosey: Work on green blocks

This was my first week of setting priorities on what I worked on. Limiting the list and tackling the most important projects seems to have worked. though a couple of the goals just required me to make progress on a given project.  But I've found in the past that consistent progress makes a difference, so long as you limit the number of projects you include.  I'm going to stick with the strategy this week.

To Do List for 1/13/2026

1. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish March, start April

The March block is just about assembled. I still need to go back and change the pressing instructions in the instruction file that goes out to the guild members. I finished writing the April instructions in advance of starting that block. The plan is to stay ahead this year so I'm not in panic mode at some point.

2. Kate's Choice: Assemble third row

There are 6 rows, so I'm a third of way finished with the assembly process.  It's not coming together perfectly, but as it's my first try, I'm trying to cut myself a bit of slack with the imperfections. Done is better than perfect, right?

3. Magnificent Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Work on Nov/Dec/Jan clues

This is another project I'm making good progress on. The October clue was finished last week and I'm pretty sure the November clue will be finished this week.  That leaves me another 2 weeks to make progress on the December and January clues before the reveal comes out in February.

4. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Finish green blocks, start on blue

Just need to finish 2 more green blocks and I'm done with that color for this project.  I need to cut some blues, my scrappy triangle bag doesn't have many of that color left after last year's efforts.

That's my list for this week.  Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday

Staying on Track, Mostly

My quilt making strategy for 2026 was to focus on just a few projects  and make progress on those.  After the first full week of the new year, I can say that I've not done too badly with that approach.

Kate's Choice came out of the project box and row two is assembled.  I'm trying to quilt a couple of days a week.  Normally I go to the quilt shop for my "social sewing" on Tuesdays and Fridays.  That means I'm unthreading the machine anyway. So when I set the machine up after Late Night Sew, I switched to the walking foot and spent a couple of days using the quilt as you go assembly method. I'd have gotten farther with it, but I spent just about as much time with the seam reaper as I did at the machine.  Still row two is assembled, but I didn't get it sewn to row 1.  Hopefully that happens this week.

The hourglass blocks from the November clue for the Magnificent Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs) are all finished. But I'm not quite done with that clue as each hourglass needs another piece attached. About a fifth of the subunits are complete.  This part of the clue should go quickly.  The hope is to be all caught up on the clues before the reveal comes out next month.

So not bad for the first full week of the new year.  But here's where I'm probably going off track.  Meadow Mist Designs is sponsoring a Stash Busting Quilt Along.  Cheryl is one of my favorite quilt designers.  I've done 10 of her mystery quilt alongs and made two quilts from her last book.  I really was going to pass, but then found  one of the patterns that was picked for the quilt along is just sitting on my computer unused.  It uses fat quarters, of which I have quite a large collection. If I can find all the necessary fabric in the stash, I'm probably going to sew along.

That's how my week went.  Linking up with Patchwork & Quilts and Sew and Tell Monday.

Stitching Stuff: Week 2 of 2026

We are more than a week into the new year.  I'm mostly back into my normal groove. I'm doing well with focusing on my goals. But we are only a week in, a year is a long time to keep yourself in line.  In fact, there's a another quilt along that's been posted I really want to play along with that's not on my new project list for 2026.  I'm trying to resist, but I did look to see if I have fabric in my stash for it.  I do.  Oh well, I'll just have to deliver on moving my quilt tops to finished.

I did pretty well on getting into the sewing room and moving projects along.

  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/Jan = 10/10 days
  • 15 minute days/2026 = 10/10 days
  • Success rate = 100%

So far, so good on keeping up with my stitching time. It will get harder as things get busy and vacations come up.  But it is motivating to get off to a good start for the year.

My Girl sent me a new photo of Queenie (My Girl's kitty) this week.

When My Girl was home for Christmas, I asked her if she wanted her tiger quilt for Queenie since that cat loves my quilts.  When My Girl was little, she adored tigers and had a large family of stuffed tigers in her room.  I made this quilt for her back in 2005, so it's over 20 years old.  It's been folded up in my closet for at least the last 15 years. Quilts up in a closet do no one any good, they should be used and enjoyed.  My Girl said Queenie really likes this one.  So it should see some good use in the future.  Queenie certainly looks good laying on it.

Have you made a good start on your stitching goals for the year?

Week 150 Photo Challenge: Night Photography After the Rain

It's been almost 2 months since my last photo challenge post.  The new photo card prompts are very specific and some of them have been challenging to pull off as they require very specific conditions.  The photo card for week 150 was one of those.

We pulled this card back in mid November and then proceeded to have the driest last two months of the year ever in Oklahoma.  My Girl also struggled. Houston is well known for it's very localized pop up showers.  There was rain, but it was never in her part of town when she was able to get a photo. So it's been really hard to follow up on this prompt.

It did finally rain this week.  Though it didn't start raining till about 4 AM.  So if you define night as when it's still dark out, then my photo fits the challenge.

Kate: Raindrops on Windows

After the storm passed, I wondered outside, but getting any type of photo of the wet landscape just didn't work. It wasn't until I got to looking at the office windows that I could see the raindrops sparkling there.  You can see the black forms of the tree branches in the background. A streetlight provides the only source of light. It's not a wonderful photograph, but it's interesting.  I'm just glad to have this challenge done.

My Guy was on his way home from the gym after work one night back in November and captured this scene.

My Guy: A Little Rain Must Fall

If you look at the weather history for our community, there was 0 rainfall for November.  We did have a few sprinkles here and there. My Guy was lucky enough to be out and about one of those nights and capture one of those rare events.  This is one of the banks in downtown. The red lights look really cool.

My Girl just wasn't able to swing a photo for this challenge card. She's ready to move on to the next one.

The plan is to get back on track with the weekly photo challenges in 2026.  The next challenge card is much more under our control.

I'm pretty sure My Guy is going to have a lot of fun with this one.  I have some thoughts. I'm looking forward to seeing what we all come up with.

PHD in 2026

I've reviewed how last year went. Decided on a strategy rather than goals for the year.  And finally filled out my PHD list for 2026 so I can link up with Ms. P Designs to see if I can actually earn a PHD in 2026

This will my 8th year to strive to get a PHD.  I probably won't earn one this year either, but it's good motivation.  My problem is I love piecing, not so much the finishing. Maybe I can work on that predilection this year. Here's my PHD list for 2026.

If I can get 12 finishes, I'll be ecstatic. Seven is the most finishes I've ever had in one year.  Maybe this year will be different?  Only one quilt was finished in 2025. I'm going to set the bar low and be happy if I finish more than that no matter what the final count is.

My project progress graph has been reset as well.

I have more quilts that need backing and quilting than anything else. If I can get the bars moved on any of those, I'll be really happy with this year's progress. Most of my blocks to finish are last year's new projects, with a few UFOs thrown in to round out the list. I'm just hoping for progress on most of those this year.  I have 4 new projects on the list for 2026. We'll see what happens with the 2027 BOM, someone else from the guild might want to take over. I'm not holding my breath there, but it might happen.

To Do List for the Week of 01/06/2026

It always seems so quiet after the first of the year.  My Guy went back to work yesterday, so I was home alone for the first time in a little over 2 weeks. I got used to having someone home, so yesterday seemed especially quiet. I'll get used to it, but it just adds to that let down feeling that happens to me after the bustle and fun of the holiday are over.

My sewing time was a bit sparse before the weekend, but I tried to make up for it on Sunday.  Here's how I fared with last week's to do list.

To Do List for 12/30/2025

1. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish February block, start March - progress

2. SAHRR: Start center block ✔

3. Magnificent Mystery: Work on Oct/Nov/Dec clues ✔

4. Lupine and Laughter: Press fabrics, start clues ✔

5. Wild and Goosey: Continue green blocks, start blue - progress

Not a bed week, there was progress on everything on the list.  For this week's to do list, I'm trying to reestablish a strategy that worked for me a couple of years ago. It's basically set a few priorities so that my to do list each week is only 4 or 5 items.  I like lots of variety in my sewing, but that means nothing really ever gets done.  If I want to finish any quilts this year, I need to make those a priority.

To Do List for 01/06/2026

1. 2026 Guild BOM: Finish February, start March blocks

The February block just needs one seam to be sewn to be a finished block.  So I'm close there.  The pieces for the March block are cut and ready for me to start on those. I'm going to try to Finish February, March and April before the end of January, then try to do 2 blocks a month till they are all done. I'm trying hard to stay ahead of things this year so I'm not panic sewing the day of the guild meeting.

2. Kate's Choice: Assemble second row

This is my to be quilted by walking foot project for the month. My plan is to switch over to my walking foot after my late night sewing session at the quilt shop and stick with that for a couple of days before switching back to my normal set up to stay on track with my piecing projects.

3. Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR, Quilting Gail): Finish center block

All the pieces are cut and I've got the first set of flying geese pined, ready to be stitched.  I'm excited to see how this comes together. The kick off showing all the center blocks for the designers is a week from Wednesday. So I have time, but I do need to get sewing on this one.

4. Magnificent Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Work on Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan clues.

The stack of completed components is rising, just slowly. I should finish the October clue (the Irish Chain blocks) this week. The pieces needed for the January clue need to be cut. I'll do that this afternoon, this is the project I'm going to take to late night sew.

5. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Work on green blocks

Yes, I know the RSC color is blue this month. But after I complete these 2 blocks, just 4 more green are needed to finish off that color. So while I'm on a roll with those, I want to finish them. Hopefully I'll have time before the end of the month to finish a few blue ones.

So that's my list for the week.  I'm hoping to limit my distractions and get some good stitching done this month.  Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday.
