December (and 2023) Wrap Up: PHD in 2023

We are already a couple of days into 2024, so it's definitely time to review my progress on my PHD projects this year and link one more time with Quilting Gail's PHD in 2023.  It definitely wasn't one of my more successful years in terms of finishes and my report shows that. 

  

I was able to add one more finish before the year ended.  That brings my total for the year to 3.  Not stellar, but it's one more than I finished last year.  I'll take an incremental increase. I finished three of the small projects I started, but none of my new quilt starts in 2023.  Malted Mystery and Indigo Way don't count as clues are continuing into 2024.   

However if you look at my year in terms of progress, I did pretty well on that front. 

There'd been no progress on this embroidered panel since 2021.  It only saw progress in November and December. But now it's more than half way finished. It's not on my official UFO list this year, but it is my travel project. I'm going to try to do more on it when I'm on the road this year. 

My oldest unfinished Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt, Scrappy Butterflies, saw a lot of progress this year. 

Another project that hadn't seen any progress since 2021.  All the alternate blocks were finished in 2023, set together with borders added.  The last step was to finish the backing.  That's done, so the plan for January will be to get this project prepped so it can go out for quilting.  Fingers crossed this is my first finish for 2024. 

I also struggle to finish the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilts.  But the 2021 version, Rhododendron, is getting close to being a finished top. 

It's took most of the year to finish the last block, cut the setting triangles and assemble the top.  Only two more borders are needed and then this project will be a finished quilt top.  With all the new stuff in the works, I may not get back to this project till March or April.  

The last finish of 2023 was Melodic Mystery.  

All the clues for the 2022 Meadow Mist Designs Mystery hadn't come out for this mystery as of the end of last year, so it was still in bits and pieces last January.  The quilt top was finished in August, but it took me a couple of months to get it sent out for quilting.  I'm happy with how it turned out.  The pink and green color palette is a new one for me.  This quilt will be donated to one of the family support charities in our area.

There was good progress this year on the 2022 Bonnie Hunter mystery, Chilhowie.  We didn't have all the clues by the end of of 2022, so it's not surprising that it wasn't finished by the end last year. 

Chilhowie has been my leaders and enders project for most of 2023.  The component parts are under construction, I'm still short one block before assembly of the quilt top can happen.  I'll just keep plugging and hopefully this one will be completed before the 2024 BH mystery starts up.

Malted Mystery is the 2023 Meadow Mist Designs Mystery.  It started in July with fabric selection. 

I'm still working on the December clue. The January clue comes out tomorrow. So I'm just slightly behind on this one.  

The 2023 Bonnie Hunter Mystery, Indigo Way, kicked off at the end of November.  This one is a lot harder to keep up with.  

Bonnie had released clues 1 to 6 by the end of December. My version of clues 1 and 2 are finished.  Clues 3, 4 and 5 have pieces sewn, but I was still cutting out the pieces for clue 6 on New Year's Eve.  Bonnie released clue 7 on New Year's Day.  I can't tell if I'm in any better shape this year versus previous years. We'll see where I'm at on this on at the end of next year. It would be nice to have this one as a finished quilt top before the next mystery comes out.

I didn't set up a progress bar chart till May of this year. 

 

There was much more color in the December version.

Definity no PHD this year, but I'll take all the progress. I learned a lot in 2023 about how to manage my projects. How to make progress on the ones that are closer to finished, while still working on newer projects.  I'm hoping that will translate into more finishes this year.  

Thanks to Gail for sponsoring the PHD challenge for so many years.  I've played along for the last 5 years and it's been a lot of fun and a great source of motivation. Now that Gail has her UFOs under control, she's passed the torch off to Ms. P Designs USA.  As my UFOs are definitely not under control, I'll be playing along again in 2024.  

Starting 2024 with the Last Finish in 2023

Happy 2024!  We didn't make it to midnight last night. Usually we stay up and have some bubbly or a glass of wine to celebrate the new year.  But after being down with Covid for most of the week, both of us decided early to bed was probably better for our recovery efforts.  Grad Girl was off with friends for the holiday.  Queenie, her cat, was in bed before we were!  

I didn't get as much done in the sewing room this week as planned, Covid did take it's toll early in the week. But the one thing I did feel like doing was hand stitching. Some time Friday evening, I put the last stitches into the binding for Melodic Mystery, the 2022 Meadow Mist Designs mystery. 

I didn't get photos till yesterday afternoon. It was cloudy, so the colors don't look as bold as they do in person.  Trudy quilted it with a loopy leafy/floral pattern that I really like.  

The backing has been in the stash forever.  

The binding is the same dark burgundy from the front and it's a close match to the colors in the backing.  I named my version Peony Garden.  The pinks on the front are a close match to that flower and the green sashing made me think of garden pathways.  I'm planning to donate this quilt to one of our local charities later this month.  

Melodic Mystery was my third finish for 2023.  I really thought I'd have more finishes my first year of retirement, but new projects were my focus early last year.  Even so, 3 finishes is more than I finished in 2022 so it's all good.  I'll post later on how I did overall on all my 2023 goals. There weren't a lot of finishes, but there was good progress on several fronts.  Linking up today with Design Wall Monday.  

To Do List for the Week of 12/26/2023

I'm a bit late posting this week's to do list.  We went to my family's for the holiday.  All of us came home yesterday with headaches, sore throats, and runny noses.  My Guy and Grad Girl have fevers, I don't. Up till then, the holiday had been a good one.  Fingers crossed this is a short lived virus and we'll all be back to feeling good soon.

Since I felt the best, my first back home assignment was grocery store duty. That was followed by a  run to Walgreens as afterwards we discovered that both the Tylenol and Advil were expired (by at least 6 months).  After that, I joined the rest of the family in napping the rest of the afternoon and early evening.  So no blog post yesterday.  

Progress on last week's list wasn't too bad even with the travel and family time thrown in.

Three out of four check marks, with progress on the fourth isn't bad for a holiday week.  I also made some progress on the Butterfly Medallion project that wasn't on the list. It was just easier to grab that case for the trip than it was to pack up the Melodic Mystery quilt.

I'm almost finished with clue 2, but still have a long way to go on clues 3 and 4.  Hopefully I can make some progress on those, as well as clue 5 before the next clue comes out on Friday. 

2. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish clue 5, start clue 6

These are the last few pieces of clue 5. Clue 7 comes out next week, so I need to get moving on clue 6 soon.   

3. Melodic Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish hand stitching binding. 

The first side is about 60% stitched down. Hopefully I'll turn the first corner today.  I'd really like to finish the binding before Sunday so this project will be the third finish for 2023. 

4. Betty (Meadow Mist Designs): Select fabrics

Cheryl is hosting a quilt along featuring the patterns in her book Just Two Charm pack Quilts.  I participated in the blog hop for the book release last year and made a version of String Lights.  There are several quilts I'd like to make from this book.  I really, really don't need a new project. But with all the scrap processing recently,  my 2.5" strip bin is overflowing.  My plan is to use my 5" and 2.5" scraps in blue, purple, green to make the blocks. I still need background, sashing and border fabrics.  Cutting starts on January 2nd, so I need to get my act together on that. 

5. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as leaders and enders

I'm working on the component parts for the last block.  It would be nice if that last block is finished by the time we reach the last clue for this year's mystery.

To Do List for the Week of 12/19/2023

Less than a week till Christmas. I've got gifts to wrap and some laundry to catch up on before the holiday, but that's about it.  My Guy is off work till after New Year's.  Grad Girl will be home this weekend.  All that to say I'm not sure what this week is going to look like in terms of "at home time".  So this week's list will be a bit looser then normal.  But before I get to this week's list, here's how it went with last week's list.

To Do List for 12/19/2023

1. Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter): Continue clues 2, 3 and 4

Clue 1 is finished (yeah!!!).  I'm moving along with all the other clues. I'm not caught up, but am doing better then I usually do at this point in the mystery.  Clue 5 will come out Friday, but with the holiday and family commitments, I won't start it till after the holiday.  

2. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish clue 5

I'm still trying to finish November's clue for this mystery.  I've been going slow with this project so I don't make mistakes. The blocks aren't hard, but you do have to get the position of the component parts right. I'll catch up at some point.

3. Melodic Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Work on hand stitching the binding down

It probably won't be finished, but that's OK. There is still a week after the holiday to make sure it's the third finish for 2023.  

4. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as leaders and enders

I'm making the last set of hourglass blocks. Those are slow going as leaders and enders. But any progress is good progress.

A Full Design Wall

Last week there was nothing on the design wall. This week it's pretty much full. 

The pieced borders for Rhododendron (Bonnie Hunter 2021 mystery) are finally all attached. I'm happy with how they worked out.  The plan was for two more simple borders, but I'm now thinking maybe just one. I need to play in EQ and try out some options. 

Any decisions will wait till after the holiday. I'm trying to keep up with this year's mystery, so Rhododendron is going into time out for a few weeks.  For the next week or so, I'll turn my attention to Melodic Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs) which just needs to be bound. Since that would be a nice handwork project to work on while visiting over the holiday, I'm going to focus on making progress there.  

 

The binding is made it just needs to be sewn to the front.  Then I can spend the holiday week doing the hand stitching to the back.  So I should have one more finish before the end of the year.

To Do List for the Week of 1212/2023

Only two Tuesdays left in 2023?  December always seems to speed by.  I'm definitely not ready for the end of the year.  My holiday to do list has just about preempted my quilting to do list, but it is that time of year.  Even so, I didn't do too badly with last week's to do list. 

To Do List for 12/5/2023

My goal is progress, so to have progress on all the items even if they aren't checked off is still a good week. 

This week's to do list is still pretty ambitious.  If I can check off a few, but make progress on rest, it will still be a good week.  

To Do List for 12/12/2023

1. Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter): Continue clues 1, 2 and 3, start clue 4

I'm almost done with clue 1, just one more set of HSTs to stitch together. Clue 2 is halfway finished. Clue 3 has been started, but I don't have any finished units yet.  

2. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish clue 5 and start clue 6

I finally finished the first block in clue 5. I'm really enjoying the fabrics I picked for this year's mystery.  I've gotten started on the last part of clue 5.  That should go fast and then I can get started on clue 6.  

3.  Rhododendron Mystery (Bonnie Hunter): Finish the pieced borders. 

I forgot that the last two border strips also had pieced blocks.  I've got those measurements figured out, the fabric cut, now I just have to assemble them.  

4. Melodic Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish making binding, sew to quilt.  

The label is made, the binding is almost sewn together.  Hopefully this will be a finished quilt before next week. The handwork may take longer, but we'll see how it goes.   

5. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as leaders and enders project.

I'm hoping to finish the all the blocks by the end of the year. I'll still have the sashing to piece, but getting the blocks done is the big job.  

6. Fabric organization: cut/sort scraps and press fabrics.  

That's a pretty ambitious list.  If I can make progress on all of that, even if none of it is checked off, it will be a good week.

Nothing on the Design Wall

I spent a lot of time in the sewing room over the weekend, but don't seem to have much to show for it.  Here's the last round of chain piecing sitting by the machine.

The purple and yellow pieces are the last two pieced borders for Rhododendron.  The maroon strips are to bind Melodic Mystery.  The pile of light blue, red and dark blue are the most recent subunits for Indigo Way.  Only 4 more HSTs and clue 1 will be finished.  I'm about half way done with clue 2 and just barely got started on clue 3.  The teal and white block is for Malted Mystery.  I spent more time cutting fabric to proceed with next steps than anything else.  Projects are moving along, there's just nothing really photo worthy. 

My weekend morning sewing time I've dedicated to scraps and fabric organization.  Here's all the scraps that were processed yesterday. 

The oldest scrap is that 5" strip of orange/yellow batik at the end of the middle row.  That's left over from the first quilt I made for our bed.  That fabric was purchased in 2008.  The pink polka dot fabric in the middle row was used in a quilt for a coworker's 5 year old  who had brain cancer. That daughter is 17 now.  The red and blue plaid on the bottom row is the backing for my current recliner quilt finished in 2017. The green and white floral scrap in the first row was a in scrap bag I won during a blog challenge. I'm surprised at how well I remember which scraps went in which quilt.   

So nothing exciting to link up with the Monday Design Wall and Patchwork & Quilts.  I'm going to need a very productive Monday afternoon to be able to check off a few items from my to do list.  

To Do List for the Week of 12/5/2023

In addition to stitching this week, I finally made a serious start on my Christmas shopping and decorating.  All the wrapping stuff, paper, boxes, bags, tissue paper, has been pulled from it's various storage locations and assembled in Grad Girl's bedroom. The 3 foot tree is up and decorated.  That definitely went faster then the 6 foot tree I normally set up. Hopefully that means it will come down much faster. I ususally enjoy putting up the tree, but getting it down was always a chore (we won't discuss the longest I've ever left the tree up after the holiday).  So good progress there and surprisingly good progress on last week's quilty To Do List too.

To check off 6 of the 7, with progress on the 7th is a much better week than I expected. Last week's list was really too long.  Scrappy Butterflies and Wild & Goosey are going back into project boxes for a few weeks.  That should let me concentrate on the two active mysteries.  

To Do List for 12/05/2023

1. Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on clues 1 and 2, start clue 3

I've not used my tri-recs rulers in a while, but Bonnie gave really good reminders on how to use those in last week's instructions.  I haven't gotten very far with clue 2. I took it slow at first to be sure I had my seam allowances right.  I'm only making half the blocks for the mystery this year. I'm still working on clue 1 too, just over half the blocks for that clue are finished.  

2. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish clue 5 and start clue 6

I finally finished the second set of HSTs last week and have moved on to construting the partial blocks.  Hopefully those won't take as long and I'll have that done before clue 6 comes out on Thursday.  

3. Rhododendron Mystery (Bonnie Hunter): Finish the pieced borders

One pieced border is attached, so just three more to finish. The second border needs to be attached before I can measure for the strips needed for the last two. I also need to figure out how to piece the corners. Hopefully that's all doable this week.   

4. Melodic Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Make label, binding, trim quilt

I almost forgot about this project. It's so close to finished, it needs to go back on the list this week. It's not a large quilt, so hopefully it won't take that long to get it completely finished. 

5. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Leaders and enders project

Block 8 is almost finished. All the pieces are cut for block 9, so it will just continue moving along as work on this year's mystery takes priority.

6. Fabric Organization: Cut/sort scraps and press fabrics

Now that I've got some momemtum on this, I really don't want to stop.  I may not do as much this week, but every little bit helps. 

It's still probably too long of a list for good progress on every project, but I'm so close to milestones on several projects, I don't want to stop on those.  We'll see how it goes this week. My Guy is on a business trip this week, so I'll have most of my evenings to stitch.

November Wrap Up: PHD in 2023

Hard to believe it's December.  Just one month left to reach all those goals we crafted so carefully last December. One of my goals was to play along with Quilting Gail's PHD in 2023 and do better than I did in 2022.  I'm linking up to the November PHD Update with a report that looks better then last month's. 

  

I finished a second quilt in November, which puts my PHD performance on par with last year's in terms of overall finishes.  In addition to the finish, there was good progress on several other projects. 

I've been working on this emboridered panel since 2012. It's been my traveling project for most of that time.  I have to admit it travels a lot more then it gets worked on, but Grad Girl likes to sit, stitch and talk, so I did make some good progress on it over the holiday weekend. 

The panel is over half way done. Let's hope it doesn't take me another ten years to finish it!  

The backing for Scrappy Butterflies (self designed) is in progress. 

The next step is to prep both quilt top and backing for quilting.  The person who quilts for me has some significant family stuff this month, so we agreed that it was best to wait to send this quilt till after the holiday.  I may or may not try to get this prepped before the end of the month. It may wait till January.  

A few orange blocks were finished for Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter).

There ares still 2 partially completed orange blocks at the sewing machine. Once those are finisehd, Wild and Goosey is going back into the project box till January.  I'll pull it out again to use as my RSC project for 2024.  

Macaron Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs) was my one finish for the month, the second for the year. 

I always enjoy Cheryl's mystery quilts, though this one isn't exactly her final layout.  This quilt is going to be a graduation present next May, well unless I finish something that Grad Girl thinks is a better fit for her mentor between now and then.  

The plan was to finish getting the borders on Rhododendron, Bonnie Hunters 2021 mystery quilt, before this year's mystery took off. 

There was progress on the pieced border, but the quilt top is still a ways off of being finished. I'm not doing full borders of the flying geese. Fingers crossed my plan for the unpieced part of the border works out.  

Melodic Mystery, the 2022 Meadow Mist Designs quilt along, is back from being quilted. 

The quilt was delivered yesterday. So I've not done much more than unbox it and admire the quilting.  Trudy did a wonderful job on this one.  Now the plan is to get the label and binding made so this qult becomes my third finish of the year.  

Last year's Bonnie Hunter mystery, Chilhowie, is still in the works.  The last few blocks haven't gone as quickly as I thought they would.  

It's hard to see the progress since last month, but there was some.  

Clue 5 is still in the works for this year's Meadow Mist Designs' Mystery, the Malted Mystery.  I've till next Thursday to catch up. 

I'm happy with my colors this year. Looking forward to seeing how all these Bits and pieces go together.  

Bonnie Hunter's 2023 Mystery, Indigo Way, kicked off last Friday.  Since we weren't home for Thanksgiving, I didn't get started till Tuesday on clue 1.  Thankfully, I'm only making half the blocks. 

I'm going to need to step up the pace if I'm going to catch up.  My Guy is leaving on a business trip Sunday, so I should have lots of sewing time next week.

Hopefully, by the end of the month there will be more colored in spaces.

October Wrap Up: PDH in 2023

Another month gone, just two months left in the year.  It's time to review how well I'm doing on moving a few UFOs to finished and link up with Quilting Gail for the October PHD update.  At this point,  my PHD report isn't very impressive.    

There are no changes in my PHD report, but I have made good progress on several projects in October, even with a week and half vacation thrown in there. 

The oldest UFO on my quilt plan, Scrappy Butterflies (self designed), is now a finished quilt top. 

The plan for November is to find backing fabric and hopefully have this one ready to send out for quilting before Thanksgiving.  We'll see if that happens.  

All the yellow blocks have been finished for Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter). 

November is typically quilt construction time during the Rainbow Scrap Challenge year.  With all the yellow blocks finished, I'm going to move onto orange and see how many of those I can make in November.  

Macaron Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs) is moving towards a finish. 

Trudy finished the quilting and sent the quilt back last week.  I finished the label and the binding earlier this week.  The binding was sewn to the front last night. The plan for this week is to finish hand stitching down the binding the quilt this week. So there should be an updated PHD report for November.  

Bonnie Hunter's 2021 mystery quilt, Rhododendron, came back on the active list in October. The last time there was any progress on this project was in January of this year.  

It's probably optimistic that this will be a finished quilt top by the end of the month as it will have one pieced border, so it will take longer to finish up.  But I'm happy to at least have the blocks out of the project box and mostly assembled.   

Melodic Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs) should be a finished quilt by the end of the year. It was sent out for quilting on Tuesday.  

Hopefully Trudy can work her magic and have it back to me before Thanksgiving. Then I can get it prepped and work on the binding during the holiday while we are visiting with family.   

Chilhowie, last year's Bonnie Hunter mystery, is still my leaders and enders projects.  

The subunits for block 8 were finished, but no assembly happened this month.  Block 8 should be done before the end of the month.  Then it will be on to block 9.  I had hoped Chihowie would be to the  finished quilt top stage before this year's Bonnie Hunter Mystery comes out, but obviously that's not happening. I'll keep working on this one for now and just see where it ends up. 

Malted Mystery is this year's Meadow Mist Designs quilt along.  

Clue 3 is finished.  All but the last 2 sets of flying geese blocks are finished on clue 4.  I'm probably going to be a bit behind when clue 5 comes out on Thursday.  Fingers crossed I can get caught up before clue 6 comes out in December.  

Looking at the accumulated progress across projects for the year, it doesn't look too bad.  

My goal for the year has been progress and as much as I might wish for more, it really has been a good year on that front.  Over the course of this year I seem to have found a project mix that works for me. Fingers crossed it keeps working as we move into the holiday season when most of us have lots of other distractions.

Happy Halloween!  Our plans for the evening are to hand out candy to the kids who come by.  We used to have a lot of littles in the neighborhood, but like our daughter, many of them have grown up and left for college.  Not sure how many we'll get. It's going to be cold, plus it's a school night.  

Now back to the regularly scheduled To Do List.  There was no linky party post over at The Quilt Schmilt: For the Love of Fabric last week.  I know that Carol's been really busy with non-quilting commitments, hopefully she'll soon get back to her normal routine (Update: she did get a To Do Tuesday post up). Writing up a to do list has become a big help and motivator for me, so I'm going to continue posting my list.

Five of five is definitely a good week.  This week won't be as productive. I'm going to take a long weekend and visit Grad Girl.  My Guy has to work, so we'll just have a girls weekend.  But that means I won't have much time for stitching. I'll have some time before leaving, but that still won't be my normal full week of stitching.  So we'll pare down this week's list a bit. 

To Do List for 10/31/2024

1. Macaron Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish label and binding. Sew to front and hand stitch to back.  

I'm in the process of sewing the binding strips together. Hopefully, I can get that done and get them attached to the quilt so I can take it with me and finish stitching down the binding while I'm visiting Grad Girl.  

2. Melodic Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Send out for quilting.

I found a box in my attic stash that would work.  I just need to add the packing material, seal it up and address it.  That should happen today. 

3. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as leader and enders.

All the component parts for block 8 have been constructed. Since I still have a bit of binding to stitch together, there will be just a bit of progress on block assembly before I leave.  

A very short list for this week. But finishing this list means one more finish and one well on it's way to finished.  So a short, but definitely sweet stitching week if I can check off the whole list.
