2012 UFO Challenge - August Update

Is it really the last day of August?  That just doesn't seem possible.  There was a lot going on this month, I switched positions at work, we took vacation, and Drama Teen started school.  Consequently it feels like not much got done in the sewing room this month.  I'm still working on The Sofa Quilt.  The flying geese for the "B" block are eating my lunch.  However, the Purple and Yellow Quilt (renamed to And Kiss Me Jack) did get finished this month.

This one was a quilt on my 2012 UFO list, though not the one I was supposed to be working on this month.  But hey, it's now off the list, which leaves just 3 UFOs. 

Project #7 on my list was the Layer Cake Quilt Along project from 2010.  I didn't pull it out to work on till last weekend.  Even so, I did make some progress.  The plan was to sash the blocks with black as that looked OK in EQ. 

But what looks good in EQ doesn't always work when you put the actual fabrics next to each other.  The border fabric looks like it has a black background, but it's really a very dark brown.  So the black fabric didn't look really great with it, even though it did work with many of the blocks.  So I went looking for something else and finally realized that teal would work with the border fabric. 

Going with teal meant changing some of the framing strips on the blocks, but that could be managed.  So after 2 nights spent on making a decision on the sashing fabric, I did finally start cutting and sewing the framing strips on the blocks.  I managed to get 3 of the 12 blocks framed.

The strips are cut to frame 3 more of the blocks.  Not a lot of progress this month, but it should go much faster now that all the fabric choices have been finalized and I actually have a plan.  Not great progress, but at least there was progress.

15 Minute Challenge - August 28th

Finding the fabric to start new projects and to finish up old projects is a challenge for me.  Shopping the stash has gotten easier, I've been more careful about what I've added over the last year.  I have more blenders and such.  Usually picking the fabric for a new quilt isn't a problem.  It's more a question of do I really want to use those gorgeous fabrics for this project or do I like them so much they need to be used for something really special (Do any of you have fabrics that you just pet, but can't make yourself use just yet?). 

Since I rely mainly on the web for any group projects like quilt alongs and BOMs, sampler quilts are a common project.  I've learned over the last few years that a set of fat quarters, coupled with a few yards of fabrics from the same line are easy picks for those projects (a fact that has also affected my buying habits).  Sometimes you have to supplement with a few odds and ends from the stash.  That's the challenge.  For example, for Barbara Brackman's new BOW,  Grandmother's Choice, I decided to use a fat quarter bundle that I bought a few years ago.  But it's mainly purple and creme.  I wanted to add some greens which had to come from the stash.  This is what I ended up with after shopping the stash. 

What looks like dark brown/black in the photo is actually a really dark purple.  The floral prints are Decadent Victorian by April Cornell for Moda (probably came out sometime between 2008 and 2010).  I'm not sure I'm using the pink, but it might make a nice accent, so it got added to the pile.   I found a number of lighter greens that worked, but only 2 fat quarters of darker greens.  I really wanted a darker green that I could carry through the blocks and the borders.  For that I needed yardage, not just 2 fat quarters.  I really didn't want to buy anything (I'm on a fabric diet till the end of the year).  That need resulted in an afternoon of sorting through the unwashed new fabric (of which there are 3 big bins in my sewing room).  The effort paid off, there was the perfect green lurking in the bottom of one bin. 

So it got washed over the weekend and added to the pile for the upcoming quilt along.  This is the 15 Minute Challenge Post, so why did I spend most of the post talking about fabric selection?  Because that's pretty much all I did this last week.  

  
The only real sewing happened on Sunday.  Monday found me back in the stash closet looking for sashing fabric for the Layer Cake Quilt Along Project that is this month's UFO.  But that's a story for another post.

Design Wall Monday - August 27th

Can you believe it's the last week in August?   That means I've got 4 days to make any progress on this month's UFO.  I've had the blocks up on the design wall and worked out the final layout, but that's pretty much been it for the month. 

The Sofa Quilt is still under construction.  I've gotten stalled on the flying geese for block B.  I don't mind making the geese, but I hate trimming them.  They've become a demotivator.  So the rest of the geese will be finished as leaders and enders so I can get caught up on some other projects.  It's much easier to stay enthusiastic if I only have to trim a couple at a time. 

Having relegated the Sofa Quilt to a leaders and enders project for the moment, I switched my attention to making this month's blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  I finished up all three blocks yesterday. 

My Guy really liked this one.  He was a little less thrilled with the last two.

Actually, he was OK with the top one, but asked me if I couldn't have found something other than the lambs for the third cup.  The answer to that was no.  I don't have much teal in my stash.  I bought two fat quarters to make the "leafy" cup.  Since this is supposed to be a project made from scraps, I didn't want to buy any more than I actually had to have.  I like the little lamb cup, it reminds me of something that might be in a little girls play tea set.  Here's the entire set of cups made to date.

I'm pretty happy with how this project is coming along.  It's been fun and a good learning experience.  The blocks are 6" finished.  I don't usually work that small, or with so many pieces.  It really forces me to concentrate on sewing accurately so the pieces all fit together at the end.  I'm glad it's the end of the month as I'm looking forward to finding out what September's color will be.

Stash Report - August 26th

For some reason this has been a long week with not a lot of time for sewing.  Not that we had a lot going on, but we had a lot of errands to run after work each day.  Getting home late really messes with the evening schedule around here.  Hopefully this next week will be a bit calmer. 

The time that was spent in the sewing room during the week was focused on justifying participation in the Grandmother's Choice BOW that Barbara Brackman is starting on September 1st.  I really don't have time for a BOW, I'll get behind for sure at some point.  There are still 3 UFOs on the list that need to get completed and 4 new quilts in various stages of completion.  How could I justify starting a new project?  If it will use up stash fabric is the biggest justification that came to mind.  So I've been scouring the stash in the evenings looking for fabric that will work.  I found most of what I needed except for a medium to dark green.  So yesterday I went through the "new fabric to be washed piles", organized those by color and found a dark green that will work with the other stash fabric.  It's another way to reduce the stash that works with my recently imposed fabric diet (like adding exercise to a weight loss program).  Now I just need to implement the program, which unfortunately I've not been real successful at in either the fabric or weight management programs I've started in the past.  There's always a first time right?

Nothing in, so the stash diet is on track.  I did finally finish making the back for the Fat Quarter Stars quilt and that was the bulk of what went out last week.  I had hoped to use at least 75 yards of fabric this year.  Some significant sewing needs to occur for that to happen.

Foto Finish: Funny

Do you ever feel like Mother Nature just likes to tease us?  It's been cloudy for 2 days, but we've not seen much rain out of those clouds.  Well at least temperatures have been reasonable the last week.  

Today's suggested Foto Finish theme is "funny".  After a bit of looking in the files, I came across this shot. 

I was on my way to work one October morning a couple of years ago and noticed the van in the lane next to me.  If it hadn't been the week of Halloween, I would probably would have been more horrified than amused.  Just goes to show that comedic timing is everything.

15 Minute Challenge - August 21st

Have you noticed that it's getting light later in the mornings and getting darker earlier in the evenings?  Fall's not in the air around here yet, but the shorter days are a sure indicator that the hot summer is on it's way out and fall is surely getting closer in our part of the world.  Hopefully it will be a wet fall, we really need the rain, as do many places in the US. 

The change in seasons does not affect my sewing time as much as school starting up does.  Between volleyball and swim practice during the week, and games on the weekend, it takes a toll on a number of things around the house including sewing.  Swimming is on break for the month of August and we're not sure that there will be a school volleyball team just yet.  So I have no real excuse for not sewing every day this last week, but I only managed to make it up to the sewing room 5 days last week. 

Still it was a good week.  Fat Quarter Stars is ready to go out for quilting finally.  Progress was made on the B block for the Sofa Quilt.  But there's been no progress on the Scrappy Coffee Cups, there are still 3 teal blocks that need to get made before the end of the month.  Plus no progress on this month's UFO, the Layer Cake Quilt Along project from 2010/2011.  So I need to get busy this week on both of those projects.

Monday Design Wall

Wow, what a difference a week makes.  Cooler temperatures finally invaded, though it's still really dry.  The forecast shows rain chances increasing toward the end of this week.  I'm hoping we get a good soaking, my yard is beyond brown and even the roses won't bloom.

I did sew last week, especially yesterday.  But none of it shows up on the design wall.  I finally got around to making the back for the Fat Quarter Stars Quilt, so it's ready to be sent out for quilting.  I started cutting fabric for block B of the Sofa Quilt and am now ready to start making the flying geese.  The label was sewn on what's been known on the blog as the Purple and Yellow quilt last week, but I didn't get it downstairs for any photographs.  That finally happened Saturday.

The binding is yellow, the back is a purple and yellow floral that goes pretty well with the colors on the front.

I love the all over floral motif that Trudy used for the quilting. 

Isn't that pretty?  She used a variegated purple thread for the quilting. 

I finished this quilt over a month ago, but was really struggling for a name.  KT left a comment on an earlier post suggesting Johnny Jump Ups, a common name for a viola (here's a photo).  I wasn't familiar with this flower, so I did a bit of research.  I didn't mark the site unfortunately, but it noted that one variation on the common name was Jump Up and Kiss Me Jack.  One of My Guy's nicknames is Jack and since this quilt is staying with me, the quilt name is "And Kiss Me Jack". 

I had a bit of fun with the label and liked the way it came out, though it looks a bit wonky.  This quilt was started in 2006, it was the next to oldest quilt on the UFO list.  It's nice to finally get it finished.

Stash Report - August 19th

Is it really Sunday?  Where did the week go?  Where did Saturday go?   Oh right, the week before was vacation, so this week had double the amount of work and housework as before we took vacation.  Hopefully I'm caught up and next week will run at normal time, not double time. 

Not really much to report on the stash this week.  The only sewing was to finish up labeling the purple and yellow quilt.

At least my fabric diet held for this week and nothing was added to the stash.  I have high hopes for next week.  The backing is cut for the Fat Quarter Stars Quilt.  I'll be able to count that as out once it's all sewn together.  I've also been cutting out the fabric for the "B" block of The Sofa Quilt, so hopefully there will be something in the out column for next week.

Foto Finish - Where I Live

I'm posting just a bit late this morning.  For some mysterious reason, my lap top will not connect to the Internet.  My Nook and My Guy's desk top computer will connect just fine, but my computer tells me the router isn't working.  I'm hoping the live in computer guru can fix it once he gets home from his bike ride.  For the moment, I've appropriated the desk top.

Barbara over at Cat Patches has suggested "Where I Live" as today's Foto Finish theme.  After a bit of file browsing and consideration, I decided that this image gives a good sense of where I live. 

The view is from the east looking west towards downtown (those little bumps in the horizon are some of the taller downtown buildings).  The photo dates from February 2011 when we had a record low of -29 F and lots of snow.  This view is less than a mile from our house.  Out here on the east side of town, it's relatively flat, as most people expect Oklahoma to be.  If you go west of town, you'll run into the Osage Hills (that little hump to right of the buildings in the photo).  That's not a fun drive when it's been snowing as the roads leading out of town that way are pretty hilly and very curvy.  Deep winter and mid summer don't look much different around here, it's pretty brown (unless we have snow on the ground).  Spring and Fall can be spectacular, but some years seem to last only a week or two at most.

15 Minute Challenge - August 14th

Tomorrow we'll be halfway through August.   We are more than halfway through the year and I'm way behind on getting projects done.  I've done a fair job of sewing at least 15 minutes most days.  Looking over the year I guess the biggest difference is that the previous two years I've been working really hard on finishing up UFOs.  A lot of those were projects that were almost done or at least halfway finished.  This year I've started several new projects and they just take longer.  I had hoped to get a couple of quilts done so they could be Christmas gifts.  It's going to take more than 15 minutes a day to get to that point.  It may be time to plan out some "sewing room retreat days" if I want to get those gifts done. 

I did sew last week.  Since we were on vacation and away from home, my only choice was to work on a couple of hand work projects. 

The hand work was a nice change of pace.  We got home on Friday, so Saturday and Sunday I did have a chance to work on machine stitched projects.  Six out of seven days isn't a bad week.  What happened last night?   Unfortunately I brought home a souvenir from vacation.  On Friday I ran into a swarm of horse flies that found me quite tasty.   I've got about 10 bites spread over both legs and they itch like the dickens.  I've tried topical hydrocortisone and calamine lotion and they don't really help much.  But taking 2 Benadryl really helped put a dent in the itching, unfortunately that also puts me to sleep.  Hopefully the itching won't last much longer.

Monday Design Wall - August 13th

Vacation is over, it's back to work today.  Nothing on my calender, so most of the day will be spent unpacking boxes as the Facilities guys moved my office while I was out.  Then I have to get serious about figuring out the new position.  I've worked in this group before, but in a very different role.  Change is good right? 

Since sewing is my stress reduction mechanism, there should be a lot of that going on in the next few weeks.  Not a lot of sewing happened while we were on vacation, but I did finish hand stitching a block for the Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt.

It's been a year since this project was up on the design wall.  I'm not loving this set of blocks, a change in strategy may be needed.  Or maybe it just gets finished as a small throw quilt after a couple more blocks are stitched.  

The sewing machine did get some use yesterday and all the "A" blocks for The Sofa Quilt are done.

These blocks would make a pretty quilt all on their own.  Too bad there is not enough fabric to make a quilt of just these blocks.  The "B" blocks should get started tonight.  

The label was sewn to the Purple and Yellow quilt last night, but I didn't get it downstairs while there was enough light to get a good photo.  It should show up on the design wall next week.

Slow Stitching Sunday - August 12th

Kathy, of Kathy's Quilts, has been hosting Slow Stitching Sundays to highlight handwork projects.  I don't do as much hand work as I used to, but since last week was spent relaxing in a lake cabin, I had some time to spend with an embroidery hoop in my hands. 

The pattern is called Floral Scallop.  This is block 2 of 6.  In my case, this project is definitely a slow stitching project.

Progress was also made on my long term hexy project.  This is



block number 13 of a Grandmother Flowers Garden quilt.  It's probably time to lay out all the blocks and decide how many more are needed. 

It was nice having time to just sit and stitch in the mornings.  With all the running we do during the year with Drama Teen's schedule, it was really nice to swim a little, hike a little and spend a little time with family. 

Stash Report - August 12th

How did it get to be noon already?   At least all the back to school shopping is done and laundry is more or less all caught up.  I get to spend the afternoon in the sewing room.  Not a bad way to end a week of vacation. 

Before getting started on that afternoon of sewing, the stash report needs to be posted.  We were in Texas for part of vacation.  Texas has some awesome quilt shops.  Consequently the stash report looks a bit lopsided.

The bulk of what came home with me was a load of Papillion by 3 Sisters for Moda.

The white and blue vine fabric on the end is from 3 Sisters Etchings line.  I just fell in love with this line.  No plans for it at the moment.  I also took the opportunity to adds some teal to the stash with Moda's Pure and Solids line. 

The rich colors of the Coffee Cat Cafe line by Henry Glass fabrics was too pretty to not get a bit of both the blue and the red. 

Same with this deep jewel tones in this yardage and fat quarters from Blank Quilting.

After this last splurge, I'm officially on a fabric diet.  No more purchases unless it's for an existing project.  I'm going to have to get really busy and sew lots of quilts.  So I'm off to get started on the sewing stuff.  Check out all the other stash reports over at Judy's Patchwork Times. 

Foto Finish - Hot

I made it home late yesterday afternoon.  It's good to be home and sleeping in my own bed again.  After a week away, it's time to get back into the normal household rhythm which for me is laundry.  I was all caught up before I left now I'm behind again! 

This week's theme for Foto Finish is "Hot".  If you follow my rantings and ravings with any form of regularity, you know that it has been 110 F plus hot in Oklahoma this summer on top of being just bone dry.  I seriously contemplated using a picture of our dead yard for today's shot, but couldn't find a way to make it look very interesting.  Instead I found this shot taken in August of 2009.

In Oklahoma the heat builds all day, reaching it's peak sometime between 5 and 6 PM.  It doesn't really start cooling off until after the sun goes down at about 8:30.  This isn't a technically great photo, but for me it conveys the feeling of the unrelenting heat that's present even at sunset. 

Oklahoma caught a break yesterday with a cold front passing through the state.  The low this morning was 53F.  We've not seen temps that low since the spring.  Hopefully the extreme heat is over and we'll just see plain old hot until autumn arrives.

Wordless Wednesday - Summer Reflections

15 Minute Challenge - August 7th

In yesterday's post I mentioned being on the road this week.  As I write this, I'm hoping that it gets published while it's still Tuesday.  It's amazing that there are still some places in the states where there is limited Internet service, but it's true. 

Thankfully, I was able to bring along some hand work for this trip, so I've spent at least 15 minutes on projects 5 out of the last 7 days.

 
Not a bad week considering I got caught up on laundry before I left and spent most of Sunday traveling.  Last Thursday, treasurer duties kept me busy.  I've fulfilled my last term as the treasurer for the Parent/Teacher organization at Drama Teen's school.  It took me most of the evening to get the files all caught up so they could be handed off to the new treasurer last Friday.  At least that's one thing off my plate.  I'm not sure what happened Friday evening.  It has been so hot, pretty much everyone at work has been complaining about being zapped when they get home, including me.  The lull of the recliner won out over the sewing machine that evening.

Design Wall Monday - August 6th

Weekends are just too short!  How can it be Monday again already?  Well, then again, most of my Sunday was taken up with travel, so that's probably a big factor.  I am starting the week with the laundry all caught up, too bad I'm not home to enjoy it.  Some sewing happened this weekend, but not near enough for my taste.  Then again, that always seems to be the case.

If you replace "weekends" with "July" and "Monday" with "August" in the first two sentences above, you'll see I'm in the same boat for the change in calendar pages.  Some sewing happened, but not nearly as much as I would like.  I didn't finish my UFO for the quarter that ended in July.  I've been working on the Red, White and Blue Stars quilt for the last 3 months.  Block 7 was finished this week.

When I pulled this project out of the box three months ago, there was only one finished block.  Now the project is about half done.

This quilt needs another 6 blocks before it can be set together, plus it will also need a set of "B" blocks made based on the setting I'm considering.  Maybe I'll get back to this project later in the year.  If not, it will be there for next year's UFO challenge.  As much as I would have liked to have finished it, it's enough that significant progress was made.

Half of the "A" blocks have been assembled.  So far I'm happy with the color choices and how the blocks look.  I'm having some doubts about the colors selected for the "B" block.  There may be a bit of fabric auditioning going on before I start those blocks.  Not a bad week in terms of design wall progress.  The Sweet Treat blocks did have to come off the design wall to make room for The Sofa Quilt blocks.  Not sure when I'll get back to the Sweet Treat project, hopefully before it ends up on the UFO list. 

I'm linking up with Judy over at Patchwork Times (I hope anyway).  I'm actually on the road this week.  Internet access is spotty and even if I have access, there may not be time to post.  I do hope to find some time (and access) to check out at least a few of the design walls before the week is out. 

Stash Report - August 5th

It's raining!  At least the northern counties in Oklahoma are getting some rain, including areas where there have been wildfires.  It's not a lot of rain, but the cold front bringing it will knock highs down from over 110 to just 100.  Both 110 and 100 are hot, but after several days of the highs close to 110, it does feel definitely cooler when the high is just 100. 

The higher temps have made it almost impossible to be out past lunch time.  You'd think I'd get more sewing done, but the heat this past week seems to have sapped my energy.  My sewing room is on the west end of the house.  Even with air conditioning, it tends to be warmest room in the house, which is another reason I've not been spending a lot of time in it.  I did get some sewing done this week and actually used more this week than I did the previous two.

Used for 2012:  23.2 yards
Added for 2102:  219.63 yards

Net stashed for 2012:  196.43 yards

I'm way behind on my usage goals for this year and have already blown my incoming fabric budget.  I am sewing, but I'm not finishing  much.  In part, I think that's because most of the UFOs on my list only have only a few blocks done and need a lot of work to get them completed.  I pretty much finished up all the UFOs that were reasonably close to being done last year.  There were 4 UFOs on my list this year, one is done and significant progress has been made on 2 of the others. Considering there were 12 UFOs on my to do list in 2008, not bad progress for 4 years.

Foto Finish - Watery

As much as I like summer, I'm not a fan of August in Oklahoma.  It's typically our hottest month and that's proving to be the case this year.  Oklahoma's temperatures made the national news as it hit 113 F in Oklahoma City for the first time since the dust bowl.  Just walking from the building to the car after work is enough to drench one in sweat.  Many at work have been talking about how ready they are to get to Labor Day.  You'd expect that since it's our next 3 day holiday weekend, but it's also when the summer heat typically breaks and we get noticeably cooler temps.  Hopefully we don't have 4 more weeks of 100 plus temps and we'll get some relief before then. 

Unfortunately it's so hot, even going to the lake or the pool isn't really fun.  Drama Teen volunteers at the local summer camp program and during their afternoon excursion to the pool on Monday, she almost passed out due to overheating.  She's fine, they got her cool and hydrated pretty quickly.  With that incident flitting through my mind, looking through the files for water pictures isn't doing a lot to cool me off this week.  So this week I decided to go with interesting rather than cooling.  

  
This shot was taken at Lake Murray last year during vacation.  The water is so clear that it doesn't really look like water, the breaks just look like imperfections imposed over the rippled sand.
