Second Quarter Review 2026: Strategic Progress?

Back in January, I drafted a strategic plan (?) for 2026.  Strategic Plan is probably a gross overstatement of what I actually put together, but it was at least a potential road map for my quilting decisions.  Now that we are in 3rd quarter, I should probably take a look at where I'm at and decide on any adjustments.  

2nd Quarter Strategy

1. Guild BOM: Finish May through October blocks.  Finish Flying geese. 

The May, June and July blocks are all finished.  The flying geese for the alternate border are also all finished.  The instructions are written for the August and September blocks.  I needed to verify the cutting dimensions for some of the pieces for the October block and that got done last week.  So I didn't get everything done, but I'm also not too far off track.  If I put focus on this project in July, I should be back on track before we got too far into third quarter. 

2. Wild and Goosey: Continue as leaders and enders project

All the blue 3.5" blocks were finished last quarter and most of the blocks were sashed.  The hope is this project will be ready for assembly before the end of the year. 

3. Move UFOs to finished quilt tops. 

Three of the 5 UFOs became finished quilt tops: 2026 SAHRR, Magnificent Mystery and Old Town.  Lupine and Laughter only needs two more borders added to be a completed quilt top.  The remaining pieces needed to assemble the blocks for Good Fortune have been cut.  The chain blocks are all finished, but still working on the star blocks.  I didn't get it all done, but at least every project on the plan is farther along. 

4. Walking foot quilting

The plan was to finish off two quilts, but only Chilhowie was finished up. Glowing Hearts has been pulled out of the closet, the batting laid out to relax and I've been contemplating quilting motifs.  So even though it didn't get done, at least there was a bit of progress on it.  Based on how the walking foot quilting has been going, one quilt a quarter seems to be my speed, at least for now.  

5. External quilting

A backing was pieced for the 2025 Inverted Star BOM. Both the backing and the quilt top were prepped for quilting.  I delivered the project to the long armer the first week in July.  So at least that one will be a finished quilt in third quarter. I didn't even touch Chocolate Marshmallow.  It's probably going to go to the bottom of the list as My Girl has picked a few quilts that will be going to college and graduate school friends.  So those will higher priority the last half of the year.  

Second quarter wasn't a total success, but I have learned a lot. I'm doing well at moving projects to finished quilt tops. That will help a lot in clearing out my UFO list. But I'm not doing so hot on either the walking foot quilting or getting quilts ready for external quilting.  It seems one quilt top for each a quarter is about my speed on that part of the UFO process. I'll have to consider if that modifies my strategy for third quarter or not.  At any rate, there's been reasonable progress on all of my "strategies".  Not a bad first half of the year.   

June PHD Report

Hard to believe we are half way through 2026. By this point you realize your goals were just a touch too ambitious and what seemed doable back in January is probably not going to get done. At least that's how it seems to work for me. Thankfully it is the start of a new month, so another chance to make good progress on my projects.  Linking up with Ms. P Designs to review on my progress with my June PHD Report.  

June's report includes another finish.  It's my second for the year. Which isn't much, but two finishes is double what I had last year. Not what I had hoped to achieve by this point in the year, but I'm not going to be too hard on myself. 

Chilhowie, the 2022 Bonnie Hunter Mystery, was finished in June. This is my first attempt at quilting a whole quilt (my March finish was a quilt as you go project).  I learned a lot while quilting this project. It's far from perfect, but it doesn't look too bad. The quilt is 61" x 62", a bit bigger then I remembered.  This project was donated to the local charity that supports women fleeing domestic violence.  I'm hoping this colorful quilt ends up with one of the kids, I think they'd like the bold colors.

Even though there was only one finish this month, there has been good progress on some of my other UFOs.  

The embroidered butterfly panel is my travel project. It came along with me on my visit to My Girl the last week of June.  I also took my sewing machine. But the days we had plans, it was easier to work in a few minutes of embroidery time then pull out all the sewing stuff. I sew on her dining room table, so it has to get put away when we eat. I made good progress on the 7th butterfly. 

I needed a new block assembly project for June.  The UFO with the most blocks already completed was Good Fortune, the 2018 Bonnie Hunter Mystery. The chain blocks were a pretty quick finish, the main pinwheel blocks are taking a bit longer. 

June was spent adding sashings to the blue Wild and Goosey blocks (Bonnie Hunter). I made good progress with those, but didn't quite get finished.  It's much easier to put the blocks up on the design wall now that most of them are sashed. I'm excited to get this project to the assembly stage.  Purple and teal still need a number of blocks, but there has been progress on both.  

The 2025 Guild BOM is prepped for quilting and will be dropped off for long arm quilting this week.  Fingers crossed that means a finish in July.  

The July block of the month for the guild was shown at the June meeting.  I've been working on the blocks for the rest of the year.  Instructions have been written, but that's about it. I need to get going as I'll need to have the August block ready in just a couple of weeks. 

 

The blocks for Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter's 2025 mystery) were finished last month and assembled into a top. The first border is on.  The strips for the last two borders are cute. Those should go on in July. 

Looking back, there was visible progress last month on my project tracking chart.  

 There was a finish, another quilt that reached the ready to be quilted stage, and another quilt to adding borders stage. There has been steady progress in the first half of the year.  Hopefully I can keep up the momentum into July.   

Chilhowie: The Second Finish for 2026

I'm currently in Texas, hanging out with My Girl and Queenie.  I spent most of last week getting ready to travel and not as much time in the sewing room. But I did reach one big milestone. The quilting of Chilhowie was completed and I made getting it bound a priority so I had a second finish to add to my tally before we cross into the later half of the year. 

Chilhowie was the 2022 Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilt.  I opted to make just 9 blocks, the quilt still turned out to be a good sized lap quilt at 61" x 62".  

The backing is pieced using the blocks from the pieced border that I decided not to add along with a couple of older pieces of yardage from the stash. 

The paisley print was used in a quilt started in 2010.  So it's close to 20 years old.  The dark brown was a Connecting Threads purchase that just hadn't found its way into a project yet. 

This is the second quilt I've quilted on my sewing machine. The first whole quilt that I've attempted. 

The quilting is pretty simple. Just diagonal lines across the center and a set of 3 straight lines in the borders. The stitching looks much more even and straight in the later quilting efforts. I've learned a large part of quilting on your sewing machine is figuring out how to manipulate the quilt so it doesn't drag when it's going under the walking foot. I'm not in love with the quilting part of the finishing process. But now that I'm retired, it just makes sense for me to tackle my smaller quilts.  So there will definitely be more walking foot quilting this year. I've already got my next project to be quilted picked out.

To Do List for 6/9/2026

1.  2025 Guild BOM: Prep quilt top for quilting

The backing is pressed and de-threaded.  The quilt top isn't going to go quickly.  I suspect it will take me most of next weekend to get it prepped.  

2. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue quilting

The cross hatching is done.  After a consultation with my late night sewing buddies, I'm going to move on to quilting the borders this week.  I'm hoping to have a completed quilt soon. 

3. Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter): Continue assembling quilt

Having two late night sewing sessions really helped move the main blocks along for this quilt.  I'm going to cut the border strips so those are ready to sew.  This should be a finished quilt top before the end of the month.  

4. Good Fortune (Bonnie Hunter): Continue making blocks 

Working on this project wasn't in last week's list.  But after making such good progress on Lupine, I needed some block construction to work in between assembling the rows for the other project.  After yesterday's photo of the black and purple blocks, I thought these were done. Nope, still need to make another 4 blocks.  But that's not too bad. There should be progress on main blocks this week too. 

5. Wild and Goosy (Bonnie Hunter): Continue sashing blue blocks  

 

These blocks are my current leaders and enders project. So it's been slow going.  There will be 16 sashed blocks once all of the flying geese units have been sashed, so not quite halfway there.

Making Progress on the Bonnie Hunter Mystery Backlog

It was a pretty productive week, which resulted in a not so hot weekend.  One of our local quilt shops has a late night sew one night a week. This week the shop decided to host two late night sewing sessions. It's usually a pretty fun session with lots of stories, laughter and valuable quilt making feedback. The only problem is the sewing set up isn't the best from an ergonomic standpoint for me. One late night isn't an issue, but apparently that second 6 hour session wasn't such a good idea. I woke up early Friday with a shoulder that was absolutely on fire. Which meant limited sewing time for most of the weekend. 

Such is life these days. But moving on. With two late night sewing sessions, I finished all the blocks for Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter 2025 mystery), but completely forgot to take a picture of them while there were up on the shop's design wall.  

The first two rows are assembled and are pinned together for stitching  Assembling the third row is in progress. The Lupine blocks should be all sewn together this week.  Not sure all the borders will be done, but hopefully those will at least be started this week.  Lupine and Laughter should be a finished quilt top before the end of the month.

Since Lupine was progressing so well, I took a look at my UFO list to decide what set of blocks to finish up next. And decided next up was going to be Good Fortune, the 2018 Bonnie Hunter mystery. Last week I cut all the fabrics needed to finish up the blocks.  The alternate block is simpler, so I started with finishing up the 4 patches needed to make the remaining blocks. 

And made some progress on assembling a few of those alternate blocks. 

I need to check my block counts again, this may be all the alternate blocks I need.  If so, next comes finishing up the main blocks. 

Since my progress has been so good and I couldn't really sew this weekend, I was looking in my project boxes to decide what's next.  Of the 14 Bonnie Hunter mysteries I've started, 7 are completed quilts and 4 are quilt tops.  That leaves just 3 that need to be moved to quilt tops.  With Lupine and Good Fortune moving along, I decided to tackle the last unfinished mystery, Celtic Solstice (2013 mystery) next.  

I played around in Electric Quilt and decided how big to make the quilt top.  About the half blocks needed for the planned quilt top are  made.  Sometime in the next couple of weeks, I'll start cutting pieces needed to finish these blocks.  

The 2022 Bonnie Hunter Mystery, Chilhowie, is my current home machine quilting project.  It should be a completed quilt by the end of the month.  Slowly but surely, my BH mystery backlog is getting closer to finished quilts.

The back needs to pressed and any loose threads removed. It would be a good idea to run the vacuum in the sewing room before I start that process.  

2. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue Quilting

Half the quilt has the second set of diagonal lines quilted.  Still half left to do.  Rather than adding another set of diagonal lines, I may just sew another set of lines from edge to edge.  We'll see how it looks once all the diagonal quilting is done.  I know what I'm quilting in the first narrow border. Still haven't figured out what goes in the last border.  

3. Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on main blocks

The main blocks are slow going, but I'm starting to pick up speed as I get more of the block components made.  

5. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Continue sashing blue blocks

The sashing has been slow going as I'm sewing those blocks as my leaders and enders.  I may change my strategy there.

My reading time encroached into my sewing time this last week.  I'm sure part of the reason is that the stairs up to the sewing room haven't been fun to navigate with my knee giving me fits. So it takes a bit more motivation to head that direction.  Thankfully, I was in the sewing room enough to make good progress on last week's to do list.

2. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue Quilting

Quilting of Chilhowie is moving along.  I'm finally getting a better handle on how to handle a large quilt on my sewing machine.  I'm getting better at keeping the lines straight and the stitching even. I'm debating if I need to go back and add one more set of lines in each direction.  The space between the stitching lines is 4", that's the maximum recommended for the batting. Is that going to be enough?  

3. Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on main blocks.

Construction of the main block has been pretty slow.  I decided to paper piece the star points. You need 8 for each block, so that's been the slow part of the process.  At least I can see visible progress.  

4. Good Fortune (Bonnie Hunter): Pull project box, assess status

Good Fortune is the 2018 Bonnie Hunter mystery.  Looking at my records I haven't worked on it since February of 2019. Based on the mock ups found in my EQ files, I'm about half way done with the blocks.  Not sure what's in the project box, I suspect the next step will be to cut more fabric.  

 

5. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Continue sashing blue blocks

I haven't made a lot of progress with sashing the blocks. It's been slow but steady progress, which is fine for now.  

That's my list for this week.  Hard to believe this is the last list for May.  This month certainly went fast.  June probably will too.  It always seems like the year moves faster the closer you get to the end of it.  Linking up with the Quilt Schmilt for To Do Tuesday.

The to do list post is a bit late this week. I had an early morning appointment yesterday, followed by our gym workout, then a trip to Wally World as we call it.  It was time for lunch by the time we got home. When I did get back to the computer in the afternoon, I needed to make sure the guild block of the month instructions were ready to go as yesterday was meeting day.  I just didn't get around to writing a blog post.

1. 2025 Guild BOM: make backing

The 2025 BOM is a big quilt, it needs almost 6 yards of backing fabric.  I found this older Connecting Threads fabric in my stash. I have 7 yards of it.  So that should work. I've started cutting the pieces for the backing, it should be assembled before next week.  

2. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue quilting

The plan is to use the walking foot to quilt straight lines along the diagonals of the quilt.  I've finished all the lines along one diagonal. I'll start on the lines from the other diagonal today.  

3. Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on block A 

I've added one block to the wall since Monday, so no photo.  Hopefully, I'll have time to sew this weekend and can get all these blocks done.  

4.  Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Continue sashing blue blocks

This has been slow moving as I'm sashing the blocks as my leaders and enders project. Only 2 blocks completely sashed. I may have to make this a full task and start using the purple blocks as my leaders project.  

That's my list for this week. Pretty much the same as last week.  The 2025 BOM and Chilhowie should drop off in a couple of weeks.  Then I'll have to figure out what projects come next.

To Do List for the Week of 5/12/2026

My back has been slowly getting better. Bending is still problematic, but otherwise I'm mostly pain free.  My therapy has included cycling, walking and sewing.  Movement is the best thing for the back and with all the walking between rooms I did working on Chilowie, I moved a lot!  It's a blessing that the sewing room was one of the places I could go and not hurt. That was really good for last week's to do list.

To Do List for 5/12/2026

1. 2025 Guild BOM: Make backing

My Girl has asked me to finish this quilt for one of her college buddies.  This one is a bit big for me to quilt on my sewing machine. Plus, having some professionally quilted will help me make a dent in the number of to be quilted projects.  I found a reasonable backing fabric in the stash.  So I need to get some measurements and get started on sewing the back up.  It also needs a different name. My Girl is usually pretty good at coming up with good names for the quilts that go to her friends.  

2. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue quilting 

I'm using painters tape to mark my lines. The first two lines were not perfect. I may or may not go back to fix them. I'll see how noticeable the wobbles are once all the quilting is done.  At least I got started. It's slow going at the moment. I'm hoping it gets faster with more practice.  

3. Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter): Work on A blocks

I was reading the pattern last night to get started on what I thought was block B.  My block IDs are switched from Bonnie's.  That's OK, as long as I know which is which.  I've started on the "framing blocks" for the first block.  That purple may be way to dark for the rest of the quilt, but it's what I've cut, so we'll see how it develops as the blocks come together. 

4. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Continue sashing blue blocks

Only 1 block sashed so far, 63 left.  This makes a great leader and ender project.  

Another short list.  But it is in line with my strategy was for the year.  I wanted to keep the list to 4 to 5 to dos during second and third quarter.  The focus will be on getting quilts to finished over the next few months.

Tackling the Bonnie Hunter Unfinished Mystery Quilts

If you've followed me for any length of time you probably know I have a week spot for Cheryl Brickey's Meadow Mist Designs mystery quilts and Bonnie Hunter's annual mystery quilt alongs. I've been sewing with Bonnie's mysteries since 2013. That year was her Celtic Solstice mystery. It's still in pieces with a few blocks made. It's on my 2026 project list. Not sure I'm going to get that far. 

I've started 15 of Bonnie's mysteries and finished 7 of them.  Her 2024 mystery was Old Town.  It's one step closer to being finished. 

The borders were added over the weekend and it's now a finished quilt top. When I bought that teal fabric, I wasn't sure how to use it. It worked really well as the accent color in this quilt.  Rather than pink, I switched to gold, which was one of the accent colors in the teal print. Not my normal color palette, but I do really like how this one turned out. 

Old Town now joins the 14 other quilt tops waiting to be quilted in the spare closet.  

I do have a plan to tackle getting at least some of these tops to finished quilts this year. I'm working on quilting Chilhowie (the 2022 Bonnie Hunter mystery) with my walking foot. I've started but it's going to take a few weeks to finish.  Some of the quilts I am going to get professionally quilted.  Hopefully between the two efforts I can whittle down the to be quilted list a bit.

Hard to believe it is already May. I completely missed that yesterday was "May the 4th Be With You" day.  Today is Cinco de Mayo, so happy holiday if you are of Mexican heritage. Mother's Day is this weekend (I have no idea what to get my mother).  

The end of April, beginning of May were pretty productive as my to do list shows for last week shows. 

To Do List for 4/28/2026

Definitely a lot of progress on the to do list last week. Now that Magnificent Mystery is a finished top and the Guild BOM is caught up for a few months, I can add something back to the list and it will still be shorter then last week's list. 

To Do List for 5/5/2026

1. Old Town (Bonnie Hunter): Work on borders

I finished assembling the quilt top back in December of last year. It got put away to concentrate on all the new projects that started in December and January.  All it needs is the borders.  I spent some time in Electric Quilt yesterday and finally decided on fabrics and layout.  I'm excited to get this one to finished quilt top.  

2. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Sandwich quilt and start marking

The top, batting and backing are all prepped.  With my back, I can't crawl around on the ground, so I'm going to have to take the sandwich to the quilt shop and assemble it there.  There is a big table in the back that should make that a lot easier.  If all I do is get the sandwich made this week, I'm good with that.  

3.  Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter): Work on A blocks

 

In the project bag were 5 finished block A's and this partially assembled one. My plan was to make 3/4 of the blocks, I think.  I need to pull out my notes and confirm that. The plan is to work on this one till it's finished quilt top.  

4. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Finish blue blocks, start sashing

 

Just one blue block left to finish. Then I'll need to lay out all the blocks in groups of four and decide which block goes where.  Sashing goes fast so I'm hoping to have these all made into 7.5" blocks by the end of the month.  

This week, my to do list is all Bonnie Hunter quilts, three mysteries (2024, 2022, and 2025) plus one Rainbow Scrap Challenge project (2019).  I've started 14 mysteries, finished 7 of those, and 3 are quilt tops.  So 4 are still in the block making stage (well 3, Old Town just needs borders).

April 2026 PHD Report

I'm not sure what happened to April. Well, that's not entirely true. We were on vacation for almost half the month, so there is only half of month of stitching progress to report for the April PHD Report over at Ms P Designs. There was definitely progress the latter half of the month, but definitely not as much as previous months.  My April PHD report looks exactly the same as March's report. 

No new finishes, but several projects moved closer to that goal this month. 

The Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter) quilt top is prepped for quilting. The backing is made and also prepped for quilting. The plan is to sandwich the quilt and mark it next week.  I have a rough quilting plan and will decide if more quilting is necessary as I go along.    

The blue blocks for Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter) are almost finished.  Just 2 left to sew up. Orange is the color for May. The orange blocks were finished last year, so the plan is to stick with the blue blocks and get them sashed into 7.5" blocks.  If I get that done before the end of the month, it will be time to tackle the remaining purple blocks.  

The goal for April was to get Magnificent Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs) moved to finished quilt top. The narrow border is on. The final border will get added this weekend. I'm really happy with how this quilt worked out. It may be my favorite Meadow Mist Designs mystery.   

The May and June blocks are all finished for the 2026 Guild BOM. July is in progress. I'm only showing the addition of the May block since that's all I've shown the guild. I've pretty much decided on the blocks and the layout for 2027 Guild BOM. Now I just need to pick the colors and corresponding fabrics for it.  

The 2026 SAHRR (Quilting Gail) became a finished quilt top the week we got home from vacation.  Now it's waiting in the "to be quilted closet" for it's turn to be finished. 

My goal the last couple of years has just been to make progress. Even with the shorter month, several bars in my project progress graph got a bit longer in April. 

The chart for last month finally shows some progress in the big section of quilts to be finished. There is still 2/3 of the year left so hopefully there will a few more completed bars at the end of 2026. 

To Do List for the Week of 4/28/2026

Storm season has been brutal in Oklahoma this year.  I have family in Enid (they are fine).  There were tornadoes just west of us Sunday night. We were up late waiting to see if the tornado warning was going to cross the county line. No point going to bed if you have to make a run for the storm shelter just as you get to sleep. More rain/storms are in the forecast for today. Hopefully those will be mainly just rain, not strong storms.  

The severe weather hasn't affected my sewing time too badly.  I did pretty well with checking off my to do list for last week. 

To Do list for 4/21/2026

1. Guild BOM: Finish June and July blocks - progress

2. Magnificent Mystery: Finish assembly, decide on borders ✔

3. Chilhowie: Make backing ✔

4. Lupine and Laughter - no progress

5. Wild and Goosey: Continue making blue blocks ✔

Definitely not a bad week. My plan had been to finish the BOM blocks before I started back up on Lupine and Laughter.  I didn't get that far this week. Still it wasn't a bad week on the progress front. Hopefully this week will be better. 

To Do List for 4/28/2026

1. Guild BOM: Finish July block

The July block is under construction, I just ran out of time this week to get it finished. We went to visit my mother yesterday, so I missed one day of sewing time.  

2.  Magnificent Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish borders

The rows are all sewn together. I'm really happy with how this project came together.  Cheryl didn't include borders in her version, my plan is to add a very narrow dark brown border and then a wider teal final border.  That should be doable this week.  

3. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Prep top and back for quilting

The plan was to use the left over border blocks and stash fabrics to make the backing.  The paisley is left over from a long ago sampler quilt. It has the orange and teal from the quilt top.  The dark brown is a Connecting Threads fabric that's been in the stash forever that matches the dark brown background of the paisley. You can see from the photo the backing still needs a good pressing. The back is easy to prep, but the tops always take at least a day to prep. Next week  will be sandwiching and marking.  

4. Lupine and Laughter (Bonnie Hunter): Work on A blocks

Since the BOM blocks and Magnificent Mystery are just about done, I should get back to this project before the end of the week. 

5. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Continue making blue blocks

Just 3 blue 3.5" blocks left to make.  Once I have the last set of 4 finished, it will be back up on the design wall to decide on the final block sets and the start sashing the blue blocks together.  Since the RSC color for May is orange, I'll keep on working on the blue blocks.  If I get them all sashed before the end of the month, I'll switch to working on the purple blocks.  

That's my list for the week.  I'm hoping to drop off a couple of projects and bring back some older projects that need to be moved along. My plan is to not start any new projects until the next Meadow Mist Designs mystery quilt starts up in early fall.  Normally I link up with the To Do List post over at the Quilt Schmilt.
