Best of Life in Pieces for 2016

Hard to believe that Christmas has come and gone already.  The New Year is just around the corner.  It's a good time to reflect on this year, decide what worked and what didn't before nailing down next year's directions for the sewing room.  Cheryl over at Meadow Mist Designs is again hosting the "Best of" linky party, except it's the 2016 version.

Cheryl leaves it up to the blogger to decide what constitutes the "best of" for the linky party.  I considered her suggestions of most views and most comments, but those tended to be posts over pretty much the same two projects.  So following the form of last year's post, my "best of 2016" posts are the projects that I got the most joy out of over the last 12 months.

Number 5: Zombies in Paris
This quilt is one of 4 graduation quilts that needs to be finished before May of 2017.  This project started out one way and ended another.  

Number 4:  Midnight Mystery Quilt
Mystery quilt alongs are one of my most favorite things in blog land.  The 2015 Midnight Mystery Quilt from Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs certainly didn't disappoint. 

Number 3.  Blooms and Butterflies (Back Porch Blooms Sew Along)
When I saw the Back Porch Bloom blocks on Podunk Pretties, I was pretty much in lust, but I was able to resist until Lea Anne started adding in butterfly blocks to the mix and challenged her readers to come up with their own design using these blocks.  Once the design was in EQ, I just had to make it.

My second Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt.  It's fun and educational to stitch along with Bonnie.  And I loved the final quilt.  

Number 1:  Vintage Dresses
The Rainbow Scrap Challenge has been one of my favorite stitch alongs in blog land.  It's amazing what you'll try when you only have to make a few blocks a month.  I'd tried some very simple paper piecing before this pattern, but I didn't realize what I was in for, good thing the plan was to make only two blocks a month.

Weekend Stitching: A Drained Brain Finish

It's the middle of August.  Already?  The last half of the year always seems to go faster than the first half of the year.  Wasn't it just June?  Life certainly seems to move at the speed of light sometimes. The last two weeks have been busy, work has been insane.  It's been hard to find time to sew.  I don't have to sew when my schedule gets amped, but finding some quiet time in the sewing room usually helps with the stress levels.  But I've also learned that sewing when my brain is really ready for idle mode isn't usually a good idea.  That tends to result in a later session with a seam ripper.  Thankfully I was able to set the brain to idle  and watch the Olympics while hand stitching the binding to the Midnight Mystery Quilt (Midnight Tulips).

This project was started last July as part of the Midnight Mystery Quilt Along sponsored by Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs.  I wanted to get this quilt finished because Cheryl has a new quilt along this year.  There's just less guilt about starting the next mystery if you finished the last one.  Especially when your UFO count is 17.  I'm really happy with the finished project.  It has a bit more modern vibe than what I typically make, but it's good to branch out sometimes.   This quilt is going to be a Christmas gift for Drama Teen's confirmation sponsor.  She's a long time friend of the family and remains one of DT's favorite teachers.  

This quilt has been a bear to photograph. For some reason the red ends up as a ghastly shade of orange if I don't color correct in Photoshop Elements.  It was also really hard to get a decent photo of Trudy's wonderful quilting. 

I really like the red petals she quilted in the center of each star, they are still hard to see in this photo. The quilting in the black background is a simple meander.  Showing the back won't help, it' a pretty busy print.  My justification for starting this mystery was that I'd use up some of my older stash.  So the back was something I had on hand. 

I'd show you the whole back, but those little white flowers are a bit overwhelming in large quantities.  

Midnight Tulips is just my second finish for 2016.  The plan for the year is to finish 8 projects.  It's August, so finishing that many isn't likely.  But Allietare just needs binding, Poinsettias is almost a finished flimsy and Zombies in Paris is close behind.  So it's likely I'll get halfway to my goal this year.

July One Monthly Goal - Progress is Good

Fingers crossed that the computer stays connected to the Internet until this post is written, published and linked with Heidi's One Monthly Goal post for July.  

July has not been a good month for stitching.  I've been working overtime on a project with several deadlines approaching in the next few weeks.  Actually, the first deadline was last Friday.   The next deadline is next Tuesday.  So there's lots going on at work.  On the home front, we've had family stuff going on as well, so stitching hasn't been on the top of my "to do" list for a couple of weeks.  Which means that there hasn't been a lot of time to bind the Midnight Mystery Quilt.  There has been good progress.  The label is made and sewn to the back of the quilt.  The binding is all made and stitched to the front.  But, I'm still working on getting the binding sewn to the back.

Two of the four corners are finished. We have plans this weekend, so there won't be a chance to do any more stitching before the end of the month.  Though I didn't get completely finished with this goal, it definitely got moved along this month.

Weekend Stitching: Progress and Set Backs

This was a good weekend for stitching.  My family gave me a day in the sewing room as a belated birthday gift.  As it was in turns rainy and then steamy outside on Saturday, spending time in the sewing room was a great way to spend that day. 

There were three goals for my sew-in, the first was to work on my One Monthly Goal of getting the Midnight Mystery quilt bound.

The binding has been sewn to the front and there was even time this weekend to start hand stitching it to the back.  So I'm on track to meet July's goal.  

Aother focus during my sewing day was to finally get caught up on my Vintage Dresses for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  Just as I was ready to assemble the top for the second teal dress, I found that I'd switched two pieces of the bodice, so that meant un-sewing three seams.  So a few steps forward and then one big one back.  The seams are un-sewn, so this block is back on track.  

The third goal was to make some progress on Blooms and Butterflies.  Lea of Podunk Pretties has a Back Porch Blooms sew along going on this summer with July's link up scheduled for tomorrow.  Check back tomorrow for pictures of progress on that project.    

Though not part of this weekend's goal, the third row of the Poinsettia quilt was sewn together earlier this week  and added to the design wall.

 The two sections are now pinned together ready for stitching. No stitching tonight as there are plans involving dinner reservations.  Today is our 24th wedding anniversary.  

Happy anniversary My Guy.  He's not changed too much, he still plays his guitars every morning, though he is a bit lot grayer then our wedding day.  Still he's definitely a keeper.

One Monthly Goal for July 2016

It's been one of those weeks.  The air conditioning went out last Sunday.  Thankfully, it was fixed by Monday evening.  Unfortunately sleeping with the windows open on Sunday hit both Drama Teen and I really hard.  Both of us have been dealing with sinus pressure and headaches since Monday morning.  Mine comes and goes, her's has been a bit more persistent.  Then Drama Teen picked up a computer virus.  Due to the way our home network was set up (on a very old DSL connection), that meant that none of us could use our computers until we either fixed the virus or changed networks.  DT's computer will have to be completely wiped before she can use it again (yes it's that bad).  We finally bit the bullet and upgraded our Internet service.  The technician who installed the new network yesterday had never seen a router like ours.  It's original from about 1995 or so.  So yes it was time for an upgrade.  

All of that to say, it's been a while since I've had a chance to hang out in blogland.  So I'm a day or so late in linking up Heidi over at Red Letter Quilts to declare my July One Monthly Goal.  

There's been a lot of progress on both the Zombies in Paris and Poinsettia quilts, but I've not had a finish since March.  Allietare is now quilted and I still haven't bound the Midnight Mystery quilt.

This year's Meadow Mist mystery starts up this month with fabric selection, I really should get this quilt bound and add to the finished pile.  So that's the goal for this month.  Hopefully I'll get Allietare bound as well, but the focus is on the Midnight Mystery quilt.

One Monthly Goal: April's Goal Completed

I'm actually ready to link up with Red Letter Quilts on the first day of the One Monthly Goal link up for April.  Of course April's goal was pretty easy.  The plan was to add a narrow border to the Midnight Mystery quilt.

After adding the border, it was time to find fabric for the back.  While straightening up the fabric closet I came across some yardage that's been in the stash for a while.  It's not a great match to the front but it works, at least it has a black background.

Then came pressing and removing all the loose threads.  Then the top and backing were folded up to package for shipping.

Last Friday, the box made it's way to the Post Office and is now on it's way to Trudy.

I'm really enjoying these One Monthly Goals.  It helps me focus on moving one project forward.  Getting projects out the door for quilting is one of my slower steps.  I'm not overly fond of the prepping for shipping process of pressing and de-treading that has to be done before I turn loose of them. By making it this month's goal, I didn't put it off for weeks which is my typical habit.  Getting this project to the quilter now makes it more likely I'll have another finish in May.  

April One Monthly Goal

March went fast, I guess because there was a lot going on.  I'm hoping April will be a bit slower and more stitching friendly. Though I'm probably being optimistic.  Drama Teen has a college visit she wants to make this month (Yes, it's that time already!).  I'll spend a good part of this weekend working on our taxes.  But I'll need a least some stitching time to balance out the stress of dealing with all that financial stuff.  

Since it's the first of April, it's time to link up with Red Letter Quilts for the declaration of my April One Monthly Goal.  

My 2016 Quilt Plan is to finish seven quilts this year.  So that's what I'm working towards.  Midnight Mystery from the 2015 Meadow Mist mystery quilt along is closest to being done.

My April goal is to get this quilt sent out for quilting.  I've decided to add a narrow border. That's actually already cut out: the pieces just need to be stitched together and added to the quilt.  I found a fabric for the backing last weekend while doing some rearranging of the stash closet.  The backing fabric pressed and ready for cutting once the border is on.  So adding borders, piecing the backing, getting it pressed, de-threaded and in the mail to Trudy is the plan.  That should be doable. 

Weekend Stitching and Completion of February's One Monthly Goal

It's going to be one of those manic weeks, so this is going to be a short post before the madness really gets started.  I'm on the road for a couple of days this week.  March will be a busy at work.  So yesterday was probably my last chance I had to do much stitching for while.  

I did get in a solid afternoon of stitching yesterday.  Midnight Mystery is now a finished flimsy.

I like the bold red with the black and gray.  Though I wish there had been enough of the gray so that I could switch it with the red.  Now I need to dive into the stash to see what I've got for backing fabric. There is quite a bit of the tulip fabric left, but I'll have to augment it with something else from the stash.  

Getting this to the finished flimsy stage was my One Monthly Goal for February. Since today is the last day of February, I'm squeaking in under the wire with this finish.  Not sure what I'll pick for my March goal.  It will have to be something simple, there simply won't be much stitching time.

Weekend Stitching: - More than Half Past Midnight

Did you have a nice Valentine's Day?  I certainly did.  We had a very slow and relaxing Sunday.  My Guy and Drama Teen made a very special Sunday dinner to celebrate the holiday.  It was better than going out.  

February's goal is to get the Midnight Mystery quilt to the finished flimsy stage.  Tomorrow is the 15th, so it's a good thing I'm more than half way there.

The red doesn't photograph very well, the quilt actually looks a bit more sedate in real life.   I'm really happy with how this one is coming together.  Just three more blocks to assemble then it will be time to sew the rows together.

WIPs - Visible Progress

Often it seems there is just enough time to either stitch or blog, but not both.  I've done a pretty good job of getting in the sewing room for at least 15 minutes each day.  But not such a good job of  posting regularly and reading other's blogs.  I'm trying to balance both, but some weeks it just doesn't work.  I didn't post any WIP progress last week due to attendance at that conference.  There just wasn't time to write a post.  Thankfully this week has been a bit slower and I actually have progress to show on Allietare.

I've finally gotten back to making the star blocks and only have one more of the Pisa blocks to stitch together.  I still have more cutting to do for the star blocks, but at least there is visible progress.  I'm making the blocks for this project in between assembling the Midnight Mystery blocks.

The first block is now all stitched together and I've started on block number 2.  These big blocks will go together fast if I can keep up the momentum.  I'm hoping to have all the blocks pieced and in a flimsy before the end of the month.

Weekend Stitching - What's Next for February?

Thankfully I felt much better on Sunday. Not 100%, but I could at least breathe through one nostril and the fever broke.  Laundry was priority number one, but I was able to get some significant time in the sewing room Sunday afternoon.  

I seem to be most productive when I've got 3 to 4 projects going. With McCall's Mystery just needing some pressing before it can go out for quilting, it was time to find something to add to the current project rotation.  I'd put Midnight Mystery aside when I ran out of design wall space.  Since it's not that far from being done, I went searching for all the block parts.  After locating all of those and consulting the instructions, I realized I had missed a step somewhere along the line and would have to assemble a few block parts.  That didn't stop me from getting the rows assembled for the first block.

You never know what you'll get when you pick your fabrics for a mystery.  I was really beginning to worry that the tulip fabric was going to be way out of place.  I like how it looks in the final block.  Some of the star points may get lost, but I don't think that will distract from the quilt overall.   I still need to stitch the rows together to finish this first block, but I'll get to that tonight.  

There are 8 full blocks and 2 half blocks to finish for the Midnight Mystery.  I still need to finish 18 blocks for Allietare.  Since February is a short month, I'd have a better chance of finishing up the Midnight Mystery quilt, especially since all the block pieces are made, I just need to assemble the blocks.  Can't say that about Allietare.  So my One Monthly Goal for February is to get the Midnight Mystery blocks sewn together into a flimsy.  That should be doable.

Stash Report - Week 5

Most of Saturday was spent in the recliner, asleep.  This head cold really knocked me for a loop.  I did get some stitching time in, but not as much as I normally would.  Still I finished off the back for the McCall's Mystery Quilt on Friday and was able to add that fabric to the out column this week.

Used last week:  7.05 yards
Used in January:  9.15 yards
Used year to date: 9.15 yards
Purchased year to date: 0 yards
Net used for 2016:  9.15 yards

This year has definitely gotten off to a good start.  Still no fabric in. That will probably change once I get going on some of the graduation quilts, but hopefully by the time I have to add a bit, I will have used a good bit more.  

In terms of finding time to stitch each day, this last week was a challenge.  But I still managed to get in at least 15 minutes in the sewing room each day. 

This week:  7 out of 7 days
This month: 30 out of 30 days
This year:  30 out of 30 days

This is the best I've ever done in terms of finding time to stitch each day.  The One Monthly Goal challenge has been a big help in getting me up to the sewing room.  I finished January's goal, but now I need to decide on February's goal.  I'm torn between finishing up Allietare.

I'm closer to being done with the Midnight Mystery Quilt, but it got put away so I could work on a few other projects.  I've got momentum going on Allietare, as everything is lined up to sew assembly style.  Both projects need to be up on the big design wall, so to work on one means taking the other down.  I have a couple of days before I have to pick which project is February's goal.  What would you choose?

Weekend Stitching - A Day Off Makes a Difference

It was a beautiful weekend.  A bit cool in the mornings, but warm enough to go out without a coat by lunch time.  The fall foliage is at it's height.  

My Guy and I got in a walk and some photography yesterday morning.  It was cold enough for gloves, but the spectacular effect of the early morning sun on leaves was worth the cool start.  

It's also been a productive weekend in the sewing room.  It's amazing how much progress can be made with just one extra day off.  Last month's brown Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks were finished.  I showed those off on Saturday's post.  The next clue in the Midnight Mystery quilt was out on Thursday and that was next on my to do list.

This is how it looks midway through step 2.  Hopefully I'll finish up step 2 today.  

Since Back to Square One is out for quilting and The Layer Cake Quilt Along project is just about bound, it was time to select another UFO from the 2015 Quilt Plan.  The McCall's Mystery quilt just seemed to be begging to be next, so I pulled that project box off the stack.  I had finished clues 1 and 2 back in January of 2012.

So I got started on the final step, clue 3.  

There are 16 of these snowball blocks total in the quilt.  The sunny yellow floral has been in the stash for years and I've got 6 yards of it. What's left over after making the top will be used for the backing.  After the snowball blocks are all finished it will be time to assemble the quilt, so it's possible that I'll have another finished flimsy before the end of the year.

WIPs - Schedules Make a Difference

It's been two weeks since my last works in progress post.  That surprised me till I realized that October hasn't been a great month for spending time in the sewing room.  Typically the concentrated sewing time happens on the weekends, but due to numerous factors, the weekends haven't been very productive.  Plus as darkness is descending earlier this time of year, it's been harder to keep the energy level up later in the evening and I end up going to sleep in the recliner rather than making it up the stairs at the end of the evening.  So I conducted an experiment starting on Monday.  Rather than spending the early evening reading blogs and responding to emails, I've been heading up the stairs after dinner and my evening chores are done.  That's definitely made a difference the last two nights and there's been more progress in the sewing room.  We'll see if I can keep that up once time change is here.  Then it will be dark when I leave work.  I'm definitely not looking forward to that.  

There has been progress.  Only one block needs to be finished to be caught up with the Midnight Mystery quilt.

The last block is at the sewing machine with just one more black strip to sew down.

There are two more at the sewing machine in various stages of assembly.  I'm not sure how many of these I'll make.  The goal is to make as many as possible by October 31st.  These are due to Alycia by November 11th.  

Lastly, I'm almost caught up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks for September.

The last orange block is almost assembled and two of the brown blocks for October are in progress.  Hopefully I'll be caught up on these by the end of the month, so I can get started on November's color at the start of the month.  

The change in my evening schedule seems to have made a difference.  I made some other changes in my work flow in the sewing room and those are helping too.  Now if I can just figure out how to not nod off when reading blogs and answering emails after my sewing time, I'll be in good shape.

Weekend Stitching - Progress on Multiple Fronts

It's hard to go back to work after four days off.  Other than the headache on Friday, it was a nice weekend off.  Drama Teen and I had a great time shopping and meeting friends for lunch on Thursday.  The rest of the weekend was spent on household chores and a lot of time in the sewing room.  

So what's up on the design wall?  A couple of Wonky Stars for the QOV block drive going on over at Alycia Quilts.

I've got some blue stars cut out but not yet assembled.  I'm hoping to get at least five or six stars out of this set of left over fat quarters.

Since this photo was taken, the blocks have been taken off the wall and the I've starting adding the black framing pieces.  October's clue should be finished up by next weekend.

WIPS - It's a Mystery

It's been a bit busy this week.  I got tapped to provide dessert for this week's volleyball lunch for the juniors and seniors.  The request was for Rice Krispy treats and chocolate covered strawberries.  I wasn't too sure that the Rice Krispy treats were going to go over well with older girls.  The lunch was yesterday.  Drama Teen said both went fast and were much appreciated by the team.  

There has been a little bit of stitching since the weekend, but not a lot.  I finished off the 34 square in a square blocks that were this month's clue for the Midnight Mystery.

That red really makes for bright blocks.  But these blocks will get paired with the flying geese that were last month's clue.

These should help tone down all that red.  Looking forward to getting starting on October's clue when it comes out next week.

WIPs - What's in a Name

Progress has been slow and steady on this year's quilt plan.  Grand Illusion is almost done, just a bit more binding to finish stitching down.  The next set of borders are coming together for Back to Square One.  The Layer Cake Quilt Along project is quilted, so I can start the binding.  The quilt needs a better name, but I'm pulling complete blanks.  Here's the quilt.

It's not one of my favorite projects.  The layer cake was actually bought for another project, a quilt for Drama Teen's school auction.  I used a few of the 10" squares, but had a bunch left over.  So the only name I've come up with is "Leftovers".  Any other suggestions?

Now that I've got more up on the wall, I'm less concerned about the black and red tulip print.  The clue calls for 34 of these blocks, so I'm not quite half way there.  

I finally finished up the last black Twinkle Star block.

 I really like this set.  Back to Square one is up on the big design wall, so I can't throw these up to see how they look with the other blocks.  I hope they aren't too dark to blend in with the others.

WIPs - Midnight Twinkle Stars

Yesterday was rainy and last night stormy.  It was perfect for spending some time in sewing room, but not so hot for a long bike ride.  That had been My Guy's plan for his day off, while I spent mine in the sewing room.  It didn't seem fair that my plans worked, but his didn't.  So the afternoon plans got shifted a bit. We ate lunch together, ran a few errands and just generally hung out together most of the afternoon. 

I did get some time in the sewing room after dinner.  One more Twinkle Star block made it to the design wall.

Just one more black star to finish sewing together and I can move on to orange the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for September. The Twinkle Stars have been a fun project for the RSC.  It's going to be hard to find a block as fun as these for next year's project.  

I've also been chipping away at the square in a square blocks which are this month's clue for the Midnight Mystery Quilt.

I may be sorry for the placement of the black and red tulip fabric.  I probably should have taken a peak at the final project, but I so wanted to do this as a mystery.  Hopefully it will look fine when all the blocks are put together.  

I've also been inching along on the binding for Grand Illusion this week. I'm hoping to have that quilt done by the end of the weekend. Two more star blocks are up on the design wall for Back to Square One, just two more to complete and it will be time to piece the next border. I've completed all of the Unit 2, Unit 5 and Unit 6 blocks.  I only need 4 more of Unit 4 and about 10 more of Unit 1 and Unit 3.  This one may make it to a finished flimsy stage by the end of the year.
