Scrappy Stuff: Rainbow Scrap Challenge Projects

I'm really late posting today.   I've added in a Saturday morning workout at the gym to my schedule.  I overslept this morning and couldn't get a post finished before we walked out the door.  Once we got home, things just kept coming up so I'm just now sitting down to write this week's post about all the scrappy stuff in the sewing room.  

There's not much to show on this year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge fan blocks, so no pictures. There has been a bit of progress on the sawtooth star blocks under construction for the border of a previous RSC project. 

The dark colored blocks are deep magenta not black.  There are several more stars under construction over at the sewing machine. So progress is slow but steady.  

I've been playing along with Patchwork Times' UFO-2017.  Judy said the project number for December was 6, but we did 6 in October.  I think she meant project number 10, which is my 2015 RSC project, Twinkle Stars (10 is the only number she hasn't used previously this year).  I pulled all the blocks out today to see where I was.

My plan for these was a 8 x 9 layout with one inch sashing.  I'm 4 blocks short.  I'm going to tackle those as leaders and enders once I finish adding the coping strips to the Vintage Dress blocks.  I'm almost finished with those.  

So I doubt any of my remaining RSC projects make it to the finished flimsy stage this month, but there's been good progress this year on moving some of the older ones along.

November One Monthly Goal

Are you in denial?  I am.  How did it get to be November already?  The year is quickly winding down. This month will go much more quickly than I'm ready for.  It's already the 2nd day of the month.  Definitely time to decide on a plan and priority list for November.  That means deciding on what will be my One Monthly Goal for the month.  

I've narrowed it down to three options. 

1.  Start Bonnie Hunter's On Ringo Lake Mystery.  I've decided on the fabrics for this year's project.

All but that red, yellow and black print (my substitution for the aqua), are left overs from other projects. They gray neutral is left over from a retirement quilt that was gifted 7 years ago.  There actually 5 different black fabrics in the photo.  Bits and pieces left from other quilts.   I can't tell if the yellows are really the same shade or just really, really close.  Definitely not my typical color palette, but they should make for a very dramatic quilt.  Can't wait to see how this project comes together.  

2.  Finish En Provence, make the backing and get it sent to the quilter.  All that is left till I have a finished flimsy is the 3 rounds of borders, of which I've got a start on the first.

3.  Start making the sawtooth stars for the border of this month's UFO-2017 project.

The Inverted Star blocks were the 2014 RSC project.  They are still sitting in a project box waiting to be set together. At least I have a finishing plan all decided on.  With the Thanksgiving holiday, I don't think I'd get this one done.  But it would be nice to actually make a start on the stars for the border.  

So after a bit of deliberation, I've decided that November's OMG is to #2, get En Provence finished and out the door to be quilted before the end of the month.  If I can do that, it won't be on the UFO list long and then I won't feel so bad for starting this year's mystery.  Good luck on whatever project you've picked for November. 

October One Monthly Goal and Some Weekend Stitching

Hard to believe we've just got three months left in 2017 and those three months will go really, really fast.  I spent some of my stitching time yesterday contemplating which projects to focus on these next three months.  First decision, what's going to be the October One Monthly Goal?  

There's definitely not a lack of subject material for that decision.  I took a peak at what number Patchwork Times picked for this month's UFO-2017 project. It was number 6, which is En Provence on my 2017 Quilt Plan.  Hopefully Bonnie Hunter is planning a new mystery for next month, which means I should really finish up last year's version.  As of yesterday afternoon I had all the pieces finished to make the last block.

I still need to make the hourglass blocks for the last sashing piece, but those are all ready under construction.  All that will be left at that point is assembling the blocks and sashing strips together.  That should be doable in a month.  So the OMG for October is to get En Provence to the finished flimsy stage.  

There's another mystery quilt along going on over at Meadow Mist Designs.  I finished clue one yesterday.

All 72 HSTs for the Magnolia Mystery are finished.  So I'm ready for clue 2 when it comes out on Thursday.  I'm really liking my fabric choices at this point.  

Now to figure out what projects are most likely to get finished before the end of the year so I can link up with the last quarter of the 2017 Finish Along.  The OMG and the Finish Along have been great motivators this years.

Managing the UFO List: What Happened to August?

The first day of September was outrageously busy.  Work was an absolute zoo, the new position is still a bit overwhelming.  I'm hoping it gets better in the next month once I can hand off all my previous responsibilities.  The Scientist in Training (formerly known as Drama Teen) is home for the holiday weekend.  So we've got lots of family time planned till she has to go back on Monday.  Probably not a lot of stitching is going to happen, except maybe some slow stitching here and there.  

August was not a great month for stitching.  A couple of the weekends were taken up with college prep and the eclipse trip.  The focus for the month was getting Scrappy Coffee Cups to the finished flimsy stage, which was my August One Monthly Goal.  Getting it finished did get it off the UFO list, it had been the newest addition to the UFO list.  The oldest UFO, Red, White, and Blue Stars is the oldest on the list and was the UFO-2017 project for August. 

I didn't expect to get any stitching done on these blocks, too much weekend stuff going on.  But I had never really decided on a final setting for these blocks, so it was hard to know how many I needed to make.  So the goal for August was to figure out a final setting plan.  After playing around with alternate blocks and background colors, I think this is close. 

The alternate star blocks need to be adjusted a bit so the star points match up with the other stars. But this layout is pretty close to done. Hopefully, I've got enough of the blue background to make it this way.  Worst case, I'll drop off the last two rows and make a square quilt.  Not sure when I'll get back to this project, but at least now it has a solid plan to move forward with.  

The September UFO project is number 4, which on my 2017 quilt plan was Blooms and Butterflies which I had substituted for number 7, last years Rainbow Scrap Challenge project, Vintage Dresses.

So based on my convoluted substituting I've done this year, this will be September's UFO project.  There is a setting plan drafted for these blocks.  So there's a good chance progress will get made on this project in September.  My goal with the UFO-2017 projects is to make some progress on each project on the list.  They don't have to get done.  Any progress now, means a project will be that much farther along when I next pull them out.  Not ideal, but slow progress is better than no progress.

Managing the UFO List

At the end of 2016, there were 17 quilts on my UFO list.  To be honest, that number hasn't changed much the last 3 or 4 years. When looking at what I wanted to accomplish this year in the sewing room, number one priority was to get the graduation quilts done before graduation.  Mission accomplished there (and it felt so good).  That took pretty much the first half of the year.  For the last half of the year, getting projects off the UFO list is the goal.  Participating in Patchwork Times' UFO-2017 challenge was one way to encourage me in that endeavor.  

I played pretty fast and loose with the challenge the first part of the year, as you can tell by how marked up the 2017 Quilt Plan is.  In order to get the graduation quilts done, I did a lot of substituting of one quilt for another.  But in May, I did start working on those UFOs.  The May UFO was Christmas Angels.  

It's still not done, but now only 3 of the angel blocks still need their borders.  This one should be ready to sew the blocks into rows in the next week or so.  

The June UFO was Blooms and Butterflies.  It just needs binding.

That is in progress.  

The July UFO was Scrappy Coffee Cups.  These blocks needed a setting before this UFO could move along.  

July was a good month, not only did the a final setting get decided on, but all the rows are sewn together and the sashings added. August's One Monthly Goal is to get this project into a finished flimsy. 

So that brings me to the August UFO.  This project dates from 2005, it's the oldest on my UFO list.  

These blocks started in a technique class focused on making these stars.  Initially there wasn't a plan other than making a red, white and blue quilt.  There are 7 blocks completed, but there is still no final setting plan.  With 5 projects working at the sewing machine, I don't won't to add another.  More than 5 projects and progress on each project slows to a crawl.  There will one weekend this month away from the sewing room, but I will have my computer.  So maybe it's time to come up with a final setting for these blocks so the next time they come up in rotation, I know exactly what's left to do.  

No that will not move that last UFO to completion this year, but my goal was to make progress on each project on the list, not necessarily get them all finished.

July One Monthly Goal: Exceeded Expectations

Thankfully I'm done running through airports and figuring out how to open the gas tank on the rental car for awhile.  Between vacation and this month's business trip, I've spent about as much time away from home as I have at home.  In spite of all the travel, I not only met the July's One Monthly Goal but greatly exceeded what I thought possible.

Since the calendar showed a lot of time away from my sewing room this month, it seemed wise to pick a pretty easy goal that didn't involve the sewing machine.  The lack of additional white fabric for sashing and borders is what stalled out this project.  You can't finish a project without a plan so that was the goal for this month, figure out the final setting. 

No problem, that actually got done while we were still on vacation.  One morning session with EQ and a final setting plan came together. 

Using borders between the blocks and the borders would allow me to use a white that reads the same as the white in the blocks, without it being obvious that it's a different fabric. I was happy with that approach.  So goal accomplished, pretty much the first week of the month.  I didn't stop there.  The stash closet was raided and strung out all over the cutting table before the sashing and border fabrics where chosen.

Now that I have a plan and the fabric chosen, there was nothing else in the way of getting this project moved off the UFO list.  The blocks aren't sewn into rows yet, but there's been good progress on getting the sashing sewn on. 

 Scrappy Coffee Cups won't be a finished flimsy by the end of the month, but all the blocks should be sewn together by then.  That's a lot more progress than I expected this month.  It's been fun to see this project come together.  Hopefully by the end of August this one will be a finished flimsy.  That might just the goal for next month's OMG.

Weekend Stitching: June's One Monthly Goal and Other Progress

Not sure I'm ready for the work week yet, but it was nice to get a day in the sewing room.  Even better the new washer showed up on Friday, saving me from another trip to the laundromat.  So it was a very nice and relaxing Sunday.  

Lots going on in the sewing room this weekend.  First off the June One Monthly Goal is finished.  

The goal for June was to get the borders on Blooms and Butterflies, then make a back, prep both for quilting, then package them up to ship out for quilting.  Done, done, done and done.

That plaid fabric in the backing has been in the stash for about 10 years.  It's nice to finally move it out of the stash closet.  So I'm 6 for 6 on this year's One Monthly Goal.  All the prep work was done last weekend, but with the crazy stuff going on at work, it just didn't get posted last week.  You can find more monthly achievements over at Elm Street Quilts. 

With Blooms off the design wall, there was room to start laying out the blocks for this month's UFO project.  

 It took most of Saturday evening to fussy cut the angels for the center of the blocks.  Block construction didn't get started until Sunday.  Christmas Angels probably won't make it to the finished flimsy stage by the end of the month, but it's definitely further along then when it came out of the project box.

Working on the UFO List: June One Monthly Goal

I'm not sure how we got to the first of June already, but we're here.  Most of my quilting year has been taken up with the graduation quilts.  The One Monthly Goal was a great help keeping me on track with the those graduation quilts, so I'm hoping it will be as big a help in moving a few more quilts off the UFO list.  So I'm definitely going to participate in the June One Monthly Goal over at Elm Street Quilts. 

Referencing my 2017 Quilt Plan, the project that is the closest to being finished is Blooms and Butterflies.

This quilt just needs the borders added before it's a finished flimsy.  I've got the fabric for the backing.  So my June OMG is to get this project ready to be quilted.  Which means finish the flimsy, make a back, prep the quilt for quilting and package it up for shipping.  

I'm also participating in Patchwork Time's 2017-UFO Challenge.  She picked quilt #7 for June.  Blooms and Butterflies is #4 on my list, so I'll just change the numbers around and make this my #7.

WIPs and UFOs: Seeing Stars but no Angels Yet

We are getting back into the routine after graduation and the holiday weekend.  The repair guy made it to the house yesterday.  The locking mechanism on the front loading washer is bad.  He'll have to order the part.  So I'm likely to be without a washer till sometime next week.  Looks like DT will get her laundromat lesson sooner rather than later.  

On the stitching front, I've felt just a little bit lost.  I started on the graduation quilts in May of last year, so I've gotten used to the "have to sew" projects that have been calling my name.  It's been a bit strange to walk into the sewing room with nothing that has to get done.  So it's time to refocus and figure out what's the goal for the rest of the year.  There are 21 quilts on my WIPs/UFO list.  Of those 18 are UFOs  (projects that were started more than a year ago).  So I've been doing really well at finishing off all the new starts, but not getting back to projects that got put up for one reason or another.  

I joined in with Judy of Patchwork Times for her UFO-2017 campaign at the beginning of the year.  But substituted in the graduation quilts for the first 4 months of the year.  May's focus was on quilt number 11 from my 2017 Quilt Plan.  That's my Christmas Angels quilt started in 2013.  The project box contained all the pieces for the alternate blocks so the easiest thing to do was to start sewing those parts together.  But before starting on that, I needed to fix the pattern.  I didn't realize until the quilt got added to this year's project list that the seams in the alternate blocks didn't match up to the seams in the focus blocks.  It didn't look bad from a distance, but close up it looked sloppy.  So the first step was to fix the design.  That meant adjusting the focus block since no fabric had been cut for those yet.  Here's the adjusted design.

With that done, I got started on the alternate blocks. 

The centers and four patches are really a dark green, not black as they appear in the photo.  I need 12 of the alternate blocks, so I've made good progress on those.  If Judy continues the UFO challenge, she'll pick a new UFO for June.  Working on multiple projects is pretty natural to me so I'll probably keep working on these alternate blocks as they are almost done.  Whether the focus blocks get started or the whole project gets put back in the box for later will depend on what June's UFO turns out to be.

Working on the UFO List: May One Monthly Goal and UFO-2017 projects

The last of the graduation quilts got mailed off for quilting yesterday.  I'll be cutting it close on having it done by graduation, but I think that's doable.  The plan is to get the binding and labels made while Trudy is doing the quilting, so hopefully the finish will go fast once it's back.  Geometry still needs 2 sides of the binding stitched down before it's finished.  That's been one of my evening projects.  Either of those could be May's One Monthly Goal, but since they will get done on matter what, I'm really considering choosing something else to link up for this month's challenge. 

In addition to the two graduation quilts, there are two other quilts on my 2017 Finish Along list (I'm using every incentive possible to get some finishes this year!).  One of those is the Meadow Mist Mystery quilt.  I finished the published mystery, but knew I wanted to add some borders.

I played around in EQ over the weekend and now have a plan worked out.  So May's One Monthly Goal will be to get the borders added, make a backing and get the Meadow Mist Mystery quilt ready to ship to Trudy for quilting.  

Patchwork Times is hosting UFO-2017 this year and I've been kinda sorta participating.  The graduation quilts were substituted in for the first 4 numbers drawn.  This month Judy picked number 11, which is my Christmas Angels Quilt.  All that's done on that quilt is some of the blocks. 

Looks like October of 2013 was the last time I worked on this project.  It's definitely time to dust off the blocks and see if some progress can be made.  The goal isn't to finish this project, but just to move it along.  

Hopefully the by the end of May there will be two more finishes, one quilt ready for quilting and another UFO moved a bit closer to completion.  I'd really like to get my UFO/WIP list pared down from it's current count of 23 to below 20 by mid year.

Weekend Stitching: What Next?

We didn't get the severe weather that occurred to the south and north of us, but it was certainly a wet weekend.  It was a very good thing that I managed to get home on Friday.  Air travel would have been less than fun on Saturday, especially since I flew home through Denver.  Drama Teen is waiting to see if they'll have school today. The river is up and the parking lot at the high school is flooded.  It's been a long time since we've gotten that much rain.  

It was nice to be back in the sewing room after being gone for a week.  There were a few minutes of "So where was I?", when I first walked in.  The most pressing project was to get The First Amendment quilt prepped for packing so it can go to Trudy for quilting as that was my April One Monthly Goal.  I wrote about that yesterday but didn't realize until reviewing at my last few posts that I never posted the finished First Amendment flimsy.

Replacing the corner stars with the neutral backgrounds with the red was definitely worthwhile.  I like this layout much better.  The erroneous stars got used on the back.

I like how the backing came out.  Now both the top and the back have been checked for loose threads, pressed and packaged ready to go to the post office today.  

The First Amendment quilt was also my UFO-2017 project for April.  It's not done yet, but it definitely got moved along.  It will get finished this month as it's going to be gifted at graduation.  This is the last of the graduation quilts.  I'm still stitching the binding to the back of the third graduation quilt, but I'm getting close to being done with those projects.  What will I do then?  Hmmm.

March One Monthly Goal: Trudging Along With the Graduation Quilts

It's been a busy week.  I've not managed much stitching time, pretty much just 15 minutes each evening.  I should have some time to sew this weekend and I'm really looking forward to that. Before I get back to the sewing room a new One Monthly Goal needs to be chosen so I can arrange my priorities.  

There are three graduation quilts that still need to be finished.  Bejeweled needs binding, Geometry needs a backing and to be sent out for quilting, The First Amendment quilt needs to be started.  I don't mind doing the bindings, plus those are good projects to work on when I don't have much time to sew.  So I think that one will get done at some point this month.  Since Geometry has such dark fabrics in it, it shouldn't be too bad to prep for quilting, so that should get done too.  That leaves the First Amendment quilt, which at the moment exists only as a file in my Electric Quilt folder.

The fabrics are all purchased, but none of them are washed and pressed for use. The center panel needs to be printed on fabric.  I've done some dry runs on large sheets of paper to work out the process, but haven't done that final transfer to fabric.  This quilt isn't going to get done this month, I just don't work that fast.  But it has to be started before it can be finished.  So that's the OMG for March, to get the First Amendment Quilt (FAQ) started.  The day I start cutting fabric for a quilt is what I consider the start date for a project.  I've got a bit to do before I get to that point.

The FAQ will also be my UFO-2017 Challenge project for the month.  I know it's not really a UFO, but there's just not enough sewing hours in a month for me to split efforts.

One Monthly Goal - February Wrap Up

Nothing like pushing things to the wire.  February has been a busy month in addition to being a short one, so getting the One Monthly Goal finished has been a challenge.  

Geometry was just a set of blocks back at the first of the month.  

The final border was added last night, so Geometry is a finished flimsy, which was the goal for February.

This is number three of four graduation quilts that need to be finished before the end of May.   Hopefully I can get the backing made next weekend and then get this project shipped off to Trudy for quilting by the middle of March.  Then it will be time to get started on graduation quilt number 4.

February One Monthly Goal: The March of Graduation Quilts Continues

I've been home with a nasty cold since Monday. That definitely wasn't the plan for the end of January.  Thankfully I finished up January's One Monthly Goal before the crud took over.  Now it's time to contemplate the February One Monthly Goal. 

Drama Teen asked me last year if I would make quilts for her best friends and her favorite teacher for graduation this year.  So she gave me plenty of notice.  One is finished (Zombie's in Paris) and the second has been sent out for quilting (Bejeweled).  That leaves quilts 3 and 4 that have to be finished before May.  The third quilt, Geometry has been up on the design wall since December.  

The blocks are just big HSTs, so they go together pretty fast.  I'm almost finished with the purple blocks.  That leaves blue, green and yellow blocks that have to be made.  February is a short month, and we have a wedding to attend the last weekend that will cut into my stitching time this month.  Considering all that, my goal is to make all the blocks and get them into a finished flimsy by the end of the month. That should set me up to finish the back and get it out for quilting in March.  

I'm also participating in Patchwork Times UFO-2017 this year (the more motivation the better).  Geometry is #2 on my list, so I'm substituting it for whatever number Judy draws for February.

Weekend Stitching: Finishing the January One Monthly Goal

It was a pretty good weekend.  Though My Guy felt pretty crappy all weekend.  Unfortunately, it's my turn to feel crappy. I went to bed early last night feeling out of sorts and woke up this morning with the sore throat and massive headache he had most of the weekend. So this will be a really short post as the cold medicine is already making me sleepy.  

Most of the weekend was spent getting Bejeweled ready for quilting.  The back was pieced on Friday, then pressed, prepped and packaged on Saturday.  Sunday it was the same process for the top. Everything is in the box and ready to ship.  

My January One Monthly Goal was to get Bejeweled shipped out for quilting.  Hopefully I'll be well enough to get this to the post office tomorrow, but for now I'm calling it good.  Getting quilts prepped for quilting is the longest process and one I don't enjoy.  So having the backing and top in the box ready to go is definite progress.  

Other than piecing the back for Bejeweled, not much happened at the sewing machine this weekend.  Geometry is my current focus project, but I did stick my finished block 1 and all the block 3's for the Meadow Mist Mystery up on the design wall to see how those were working.

I used two different black prints for my darks.  I've been seeing guesses of the layouts on Facebook, mine's probably not going to be as dramatic as others since you really can't tell the difference in the two black prints unless you get up close.  I'm still working on finishing the last set of blocks from December.  I still have the January clue to finish.  The big reveal comes this Thursday.  Thankfully I'll have till April to get the blocks into a finished flimsy. 

Now I'm going to find a box of Kleenex and go back to bed.  Hopefully I'll feel like catching up on all the other links later today.

Weekend Stitching: Bordering Bejeweled

We are very thankful that the weekend ice storm wasn't near as bad as they predicted it would be.  The roads never got real bad, they were slick in places, but not glazed over.  There were a few power outages, but none affected us.  Still it was cold and miserable outside, so it was a pretty good weekend to stay home and sew.  

My January One Monthly Goal is to get Bejeweled sent out for quilting.  I'm halfway there.  The last of the borders went on just before dinner last night.

It's definitely outgrown the design wall, I'll try to get better pictures of the finished top next weekend.  Hopefully there will be some sunshine around then.  Drama Teen loves it. She's pretty sure her friend is going to love it too.  Now to figure out how to use the left overs to piece a back.  That's the agenda for this week.

January One Monthly Goal - The March to Graduation Finishes

It wasn't hard to decide what project to do for January's One Monthly Goal. 

The question was how much to try to get done?  I do not like to over commit on my projects, but considering that May is only 5 months away now and I have three quilts to finish by the middle of that month, pushing now is necessary in order to be ready for graduation.  So the plan is to get Bejeweled from where it is now,

to being shipped out the door for quilting.  There's only two columns of blocks left to be sewn together before the center of the quilt is assembled.  That leaves the top and bottom inner border and a final border to be cut and sewn on.  The backing will be scrappy left overs of the fabrics used in the blocks.  That will have to be assembled as well.  But I think it's all doable, January is a long month and other than DT's birthday, there's nothing likely to pull me out of the sewing room for a weekend.  

Bejeweled is number 1 on the quilt plan for this year, but I'm substituting it for my number 3 quilt for the purposes of Patchwork Times UFO-2017 Challenge.  I need to start and finish quilt #3, which is the First Amendment Quilt by May too, but it's just seems smarter to finish Bejeweled first as it's the closest to being done.
