Stash Stuff for Week 33 of 2017

It's been an eventful week.  We became empty nesters on Wednesday.  

Drama Teen (aka Scientist in Training or the SIT), moved into her dorm room last Wednesday.  She's been keeping really busy, she's already working on her first assignment for the school's newspaper. I've been keeping busy too.  To avoid the quiet house on Thursday when My Guy went out for his bike ride, I went to the local quilt shop for some fabric petting therapy.  I did more than pet, there was a fabric line that just had to come home with me. 

Geek Chic by Studio E Fabrics was just too geeky for me to pass up. Plus the Scientist in Training is enrolled as a chemistry major and she really needs an extra long twin quilt that fits better on her dorm bed.  I am now in search of an equally geeky quilt pattern to start and hopefully finish before Christmas.  

Needless to say, I did some damage on the incoming side of the stash numbers, but those numbers are being ignored since the train has long left the station on having any success on using more than I buy this year. There was a little fabric in the out column this week.

I didn't do so hot on the finding time to stitch this last week.  Between helping the SIT pack, trooping through 100 F+ temps on move in day and a major bought of dizziness due to sinus issues, there were only 4 days this last week spent in the sewing room.  There are just weeks like that sometimes.

Weekend Stitching: May One Monthly Goal Finished

It's a beautiful weekend for honoring all those who've served our country.  My father in law was injured in World War II.  He really was a man of peace, but served because it was the right thing to do.  He really was an incredible person.   Our thoughts and prayers are with those who've served and the families who've supported them.  

Our  holiday weekend started off with Drama Teen's graduation. 

We are so proud of her.  She's been accepted into the Honors College at Oklahoma State University.  So come fall she'll be on to the next set of adventures and challenges.  

We had a fun visit with the family that came for graduation this weekend.  But that meant there wasn't much weekend stitching going on till last night.  The final borders were added to the Meadow Mist Mystery quilt on Friday.

I'm really happy with how this one turned out.  Getting the borders on was part of May's One Monthly Goal. The rest of the goal was to get the back made and get the project ready for Trudy to quilt.  That happened last night.

All that's left is to seal up the box and write out an address label.  So May's OMG is done.  I'm 5 for 5 on my OMG goals for 2017.  I've really enjoyed this challenge.  Picking one priority for the month has really helped me get to the finished line with a few projects this year.

Weekend Stitching - Finished My Geometry Assignment

It was a beautiful weekend here, sunny and warm.  We were out and about on Saturday getting Drama Teen's senior portrait taken.  Here's one of the good shots.

Since one of the goofy shots was in yesterday's post DT asked for equal time for one of the better shots.  

Sewing time was a bit limited this weekend due to all the graduation preparation stuff going on.  However, I did find enough time to finish the binding on the third graduation quilt.

It's a very fun quilt.  Trudy quilted a different design in each color.

Trudy as always did a beautiful job with the quilting.  Drama Teen is very happy with it. We both hope her friend will like it.  The current plan is to have a hang out party the afternoon of the last day of school and we'll do the gifting then.  There's so much going on with graduation that it's best we do it before then.  

Geometry is the first finish off my 2017 Finish Along list for the second quarter.  It's my third finish for the year.  It feels really good to get another one off the WIP list.  My UFO count still sits at 17 as this quilt was started and finished within the year.  But getting it off the WIP list means it won't make it to the UFO list.  So at least the UFO count isn't going up.  Hopefully once all the graduation quilts are done, there will be time to work on shortening the UFO list.

Stash Stuff for Week 18 of 2017

It's been a gorgeous weekend so far.  Unfortunately, there's not been a lot of sewing going on.  With graduation coming up there's been lots of other stuff to do. Family is coming so housecleaning is a must.  Graduation announcements really need to get out, but that meant we needed senior pictures.  The school's photographer completely botched Drama Teen's shots and the retakes (the school used a new company this year).  We talked about getting a professional photographer, but DT decided she wanted us to take her pictures.  So we drove all over town yesterday looking for great places for portraits.  I've not culled those yet, that's on tap for later this morning.  But here's one that's definitely going in the outtake folder (I think it was something My Guy said that put that look on her face.)

  

So with all of those things going on in the background, sewing time has been a bit limited.  I have managed to get in at least 15 minutes each day this week, but most days it has been only been 15 minutes. So my stash report for the week looks a little dismal.

At least there wasn't any incoming this week.  I will get in some good stitching time this afternoon when I take a break to watch the NASCAR race.  I'm putting borders on a quilt, so next week should see some positive numbers in the used column.

Getting Back in the Swing of Things: April OMG and Other Sewing Stuff

It's been a crazy two weeks since Easter.  I really had planned on blogging more, but it just didn't happen.  Hopefully now that my 4 cities in 4 days business trip is over, I can get caught up on all the emails and blog reading.  Laundry and prom prep were yesterday's agenda.  Drama Teen's senior prom was last night, so the afternoon was spent fixing a hook on her dress, along with doing nails, hair and make-up.

She looked so pretty.  Unfortunately it was raining cats and dogs most of the evening.  She didn't get in till really late, so I haven't heard how her evening went.  

I did finally make it to the sewing room once Drama Teen headed out for dinner with friends.  My April One Monthly Goal didn't get finished before the business trip, so it was definitely time to see if progress could be made on that front. 

The plan was to get The First Amendment to the finished flimsy stage, make the backing, prep both for quilting, box it all up and get it into the mail to Trudy for quilting.  The quilt is now ready to be shipped out for quilting. 

So four out of five is not bad.  This will go to the post office tomorrow.  So I'm claiming victory on April's One Monthly Goal, all the hard stuff is done.  

There was a lot of stitching going on the week after Easter, but there was none last week as my time was spent driving to the airport, finding my hotel, being in meetings and then back to driving to the airport again.  So here's the stash report for the last two weeks.

I've definitely added more than I planned, but it's all been blenders.  Which are still in short supply in some color families.  

It was hard to resist these less than $3 a yard sale fabrics over at Connecting Threads.  

Or these Botanical prints that were on sale at Craftsy.  Since I've completely blown the incoming goal, I'm going to concentrate on doing better on the outgoing goal for the rest of the year. 

I was doing really well on finding 15 minutes a day to stitch till the business trip happened.  At least 15 minutes were spent stitching from January 1st through April 22nd.  That's definitely a record!  Picking back up again on Friday when I got home was pretty easy.  As of now I've managed 114 out of 119 days.  That's a 96% success rate, so I'm still making an A for the effort this year.

Stash Report: First Week of 2017

The end of our holiday season is today. It's Drama Teen's birthday. No parties today, that was yesterday.  She made it easy on me.  She decided on lunch with her friends and then a movie.  This is one of those significant birthdays, she turns 18 today.  You think they'll never grow up and then one day they just are.  

Happy birthday Kiddo.  We're really proud of her.  It's nice when you realize you'd like your kid even if they weren't your kid. 

Thanks for letting me get the proud mamma stuff off my chest.  Moving on to the quilt related content.  It's the first stash report of the 2017. I didn't start the year off with great guns, but at least there is nothing in so far.

It's been a good week for finding the time to stitch.  I managed at least 15 minutes in the sewing room every day this week.  So I'm at least starting the year off with 100% attendance.  We'll see how long that lasts.  I managed to find time every day in January last year.

Stash Report: Week 51

I've gotten a very late start this morning.  Last night was supposed to have been Drama Teen's winter formal, but it started snowing right about 6 PM and the school canceled the dance at 7, just an hour before it started. Of course DT and her friends were already at dinner by that point.  So with everyone all dressed up and with no place to go, they all came over here to play board games and hang out.  Needless to say I didn't get to bed till about midnight after making sure they all got home safely.  Thankfully it was a very dry snow, so the roads really weren't that bad.  Drama Teen looked very festive.  

  
So my plans for an evening of stitching didn't quite work out, but I did get a bit of stitching in between the pre-party photo session and the impromptu party.  It didn't make up for all the nights this week I didn't make it to the sewing room, but some is better than none.  Actually it wasn't so bad this week, I did mange to get in 4 sessions in the sewing room this week.  With just one week to go, I've managed to find time to stitch 274 days out of the 352 so far this year.

There probably won't be a lot of stitching this week as holiday prep is in full gear and we'll be spending time with family.  But I'm off work the whole week after Christmas, so I'm hopeful of getting in a lot of stitching before the end of the year.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: Finally Done with Green

My weekend started Thursday afternoon.  I took the afternoon off to pick up Drama Teen at the airport.  DT was selected as one of 51 Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholars for 2016. Part of the award was a trip to DC to attend a journalism conference sponsored by the Newseum. If you are wondering who Al Neuharth is, he founded USA Today.

The Democrats started their sit in over the lack of gun legislation just minutes after her group finished their tour of the House.  She had a great time, but was pretty exhausted when she got home.

My Guy and I both took Friday off.  Most of the morning was spent in Tulsa running errands and getting the car serviced.  But I got to sew most of the evening.  I finally finished last month's green blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

I'm not thrilled with the mismatch in the gingham in the bodice.  I'm considering adding some ribbon to hide it, after all the restitching, I'm not redoing the entire dress.  So both green dresses are done finally (just a month late).

Now I can move on to June's aqua dresses.  I've got the fabrics all picked out.  

I fell behind on this year's Rainbow Scrap Project back in March when I had a lot of business travel.  Not sure I'm going to be able to catch up as we have summer vacation plans coming up.  The dresses have been a lot of fun to make, but they are certainly complicated to piece.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Ready to Play with Green

We were all ready to see Friday evening come around.  It's been one of those long weeks, but considering how a few things might of worked out, it wasn't a bad week.  Looking back it's kinda funny now.  It involved a trip to the dermatologist for me to remove a spot from my leg that thankfully ended up not being skin cancer.  My guy didn't want me driving afterwards since we weren't sure how invasive the procedure was going to be, he dropped me off and Drama Teen was going to pick me up on her way home from the gym.  The timing on this worked out really well.  But when I texted DT that I was done, this is the text I got back.

We suspect someone either let the air out of her tire or she ran over something in the parking lot at school.  Turns out her best friend that always parks next to her, had an almost flat tire by the time she got home that night.  The tire looks so bad because DT drove on it while it was flat.  My Guy was absolutely incredulous that she didn't notice anything while she was driving.  Of course she was in town, driving at low speeds as most of the drive to the gym means she's driving in school zones.  This could have been really bad had she been on the highway on her way home after school.  It was definitely a teachable moment on a lot of fronts.  Thankfully the tire place in town is only a couple of blocks from where the car was parked.  But DT was without a car for a day since they were closing when we got it there.  

Thankfully there's been no drama in the sewing room.  I got a lot done this week.  The second orange dress is done.

This one is definitely a summer dress, something to wear to a picnic.  Your date definitely wouldn't loose you in a crowd if you were wearing this dress.  But I like it, it's definitely bright and fun.

One dress shows off the yellow oranges and the other the red oranges. These two bring the total of finished blocks up to 8.  I couldn't resist putting all the completed dresses up on the design wall.

I'll definitely need to add a couple of lighter dresses, but I think the darker end is pretty well covered.  This has been such a fun project.  My paper piecing skills have greatly improved over the last 5 months.  Now to go pick out the fabrics for this month's green dresses.  Maybe I'll actually get those done before June gets here.

Stash Management Week 18 of 2016

I'm a bit groggy this morning having stayed up a later than normal last night waiting for Drama Teen to get home from the prom.  She certainly looked pretty last night.  

I finally went to bed after she came home to change for the after prom party.  I'm not sure what time she finally got in for the night, I do know it was pretty late. She has her first advanced placement test tomorrow morning, so prom was the last bit of fun before she has to buckle down and study for exams and finals. 

There was some late night sewing  last night while I was waiting for DT to get home.  It boosted the outgoing numbers for the week just a bit. 

Used last week: 0.95 yards
Used in April:  7.67 yards
Used year to date:  24.85 yards
Purchased year to date:  17.75 yards
Net used for 2016:  7.10 yards 

Not a stellar week for stash busting, but most of what I'm sewing are small blocks.  I'm in the process of assembling Allietare.  The borders and backing for that project should help boost the yardage going out in the coming weeks. 

I've also been keeping track of how many days each week I make it to the sewing room for at least 15 minutes.  The more of that I do, the more stitching that gets done.  Last week was a good one on that front.

I didn't spend much time stitching yesterday, most of the afternoon was spent working on the design for one of the graduation quilts.  The fabric placement just needs some tweaking before I can start drafting the instructions for the blocks.  That's the plan for this afternoon.

Stitching Interruptus (Otherwise Known as Spring Break)

It's been over a week since my last blog post, mainly because I've not had anything stitchy to report on. I still don't have anything stitchy to write about because last week was spring break.  Drama Teen, her BFF and I were off

beach bumming in Galveston, TX, though the photo is actually of Surfside beach.  Surfside is actually better for swimming than the Galveston beaches.  When we lived in Texas, our house was about 20 minutes from this beach.  

We rented a historic bungalow a few blocks from the Seawall in Galveston.

It was a great little place on quiet street, but close enough that we could walk to some of the best restaurants in Galveston.  If you've never eaten at Guido's, you've definitely missed some of the best seafood to be found on the Gulf Coast.

It was a very enjoyable week away from it all.  We got back on Sunday and I promptly boarded a plane and headed back to Houston, TX on a business trip.  So now that I'm scheduled to be  home for awhile, stitching and posting should get back to a more normal pace.  We are off work for Good Friday.  My plan is to spend some time in the sewing room, I'm in desperate need of an attitude adjustment and some significant stitching time should do the trick.  I should get going on that if I plan to have anything to post for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge tomorrow.  Have a very happy Easter.  If you don't celebrate Easter, have a wonderful weekend.  

2016 Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Getting Educated

The biggest accomplishment this week was surviving a full five days of work.  It's amazing how hard that is after having two weeks off.  Well, maybe that wasn't the biggest accomplishment this week.  Yesterday was Drama Teen's 17th birthday.  She didn't mention till Thursday night that she really wanted cookies and cream cupcakes from the bakery downtown. I had planned to do an ice cream cake, as that's been her favorite.  Thankfully the bakery had a few cookie and cream left when we went by at lunch yesterday.  She was happily surprised when dessert was served.  

Mom messed up by not having any candles in the house, but Drama Teen was happy to make do with a long fireplace match.  Hard to believe she's only got one more year of high school.  

With all the celebrating last night, there wasn't much time in the sewing room,  This year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge project is taking a bit of preparation before I can start sewing.  I finally got the patterns printed to size, selected the two Vintage Dresses to make this month, and picked out the fabrics.

After looking at the minimal directions, I decided to educate myself a bit more about paper piecing.  The only project in my repertoire was really simple, nothing like these dresses.  There's a Craftsy class on paper piecing by Carol Doak in my library that I haven't had time to watch yet.  So I'm go to watch a bit of that before I get started on the piecing.  Hopefully that will save me some grief and unsewing down the road.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - The Final Six

It's raining for the third straight day.  However as the temps are now at 33 F, I'll take the rain and be thankful it's not ice.  We have no where we have to be today.  It's looking like a great day to stay home and stitch.  We had family here for Thanksgiving, so the house is actually pretty clean, though I still need to do some laundry.  The only downer for the holiday was the rain, every thing else went well.  Drama Teen showed how much she's learned from watching the Food Network.

She really helped a lot and it made getting it all on the table at the same time a lot easier.  

Most of last week was spent on cleaning up the house for company. But there was some stitching tossed in here and there.  I finished off all the red violet Twinkle Stars.

There's another quilt up on the design wall at the moment, so I've not had a chance to get all the Twinkle Stars out and play with them.  I know there was a miscalculation and I'll need to add a few more blocks before I can sew up the flimsy.  I want to check the light versus dark balance before I choose the colors for those last few blocks.  But even with that I should be on track to get this one mostly assembled by the end of December.  

Have you decided on your RSC project for  2016?  There are so many choices I'm having a hard time picking just one.  It's a good thing there is still a month left in 2015.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Dark Chocolates

This week went fast, there was a lot going on.  Tuesday night was the end of the year volleyball banquet.  Thursday night was last minute shopping for Drama Teen's entry into the Trunk or Treat competition at her old school. The school has a Fun Night, basically a school wide Halloween party, every year as a fundraiser.  DT wanted to be a witch, but after we raided closets that became a gypsy witch because we couldn't come up with a black dress.  The black cloak she's wearing is from one of my Halloween costumes when I was in high school.  I guess that makes it "vintage" clothing? 

Last night was spent getting DT ready for the Trunk or Treat, which after all the effort spent on decorating the car, got moved inside because of the rain.  After  DT sped off to Fun Night, I spent the rest of the evening finishing up a report for work.  Now it's on my boss's electronic desk top and I'm done with the heavy lifting part of the project.  I promised myself a couple of days off work once I finished up that project.  The plan at the moment is to take a long weekend next week as I now have a new project that kicks off the beginning of next week.  

Add in the one evening spent recovering from a blinding headache, and I didn't get much stitching done this week.  So all I have to show for this week's Rainbow Scrap Challenge post is the completion of only one more Twinkle Star.

I always thought brown was a dreary color, but these deep browns come off as rich rather than drab.  I really like these two Twinkle Stars.  The remaining 4 brown blocks are cut out and are sitting at the sewing machine in various stages of assembly.  It will be next week before the all make it to the design wall.  

All the green scraps went into the Twinkle Stars back in May.  Any lime green got used then.  So I'm going to take a departure from Angela's color plan and spend November with my red violet scraps.  Those will definitely make some bright blocks!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - 2014 RSC Sampler

I've been MIA for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge the last few weeks. Last month's green blocks still aren't finished so there are no light blue/teal blocks to show for this month. The only progress has been on last year's RSC sampler.  I've been showing hints that last year's RSC sampler project was nearing completion.  The label showed up on a post back in May. 

The 2014 RSC Sampler is now Flame Test, named for a classic elemental analysis test that can produce a rainbow of colors depending up the chemical elements exposed to the flame.  The name was Drama Teen's suggestion.  I finished sewing on the binding a couple of weeks ago but didn't get photos until this week. 

The fabric for the binding came from the scrap pile.  This rainbow stripe fabric was used as the backing on a quilt for Drama Teen a few years ago.  It was absolutely perfect against the black border.

I'm really happy with how this project came together.  The black border and sashing really makes those brights just glow.  Trudy Lindemann  did a beautiful job with the quilting.  She matched the thread color to the color of the blocks.  You may have to blow up the picture to see the color differences between the blue, purple and black.  

Drama Teen requested something swirly for the quilting and Trudy nailed it.  Speaking of Drama Teen.  I'd no more than gotten the pictures of the binding when she grabbed the quilt and put it to use in her favorite spot so far this summer. 

It's warmed up a lot this week, but last weekend it was still cool enough in the morning to be covered up a bit.  It's nice to know that Flame Test is likely to be just about as well loved as the rainbow quilt that's on her bed.  

Thank you Angela for such a fun challenge project. I've been following along with Angela's monthly color choices since 2012.  Flame Test is the first RSC quilt that I've finished.  There are still three sets of rainbow challenge blocks that need to be set together (not counting this year's Twinkle Star project). One of these days I need to get busy with those.  For now, I'm going to go check out all the other rainbow pretties posted over at Soscrappy.    

Tuesday Archives - Original Patterns

It's Tuesday so it's time for the Tuesday Archives over at Val's Quilting Studio.  

The topic this week is "original patterns by you".  Before I could pick a quilt to highlight, I had to ask what is an "original pattern"?  Is that a quilt made without following a pattern published by some one else?  For it to count as a pattern does it have to be published some where?   Since Val didn't give more particulars, I'm going to highlight the first quilt I made on my own with out using any type of pattern.  It's another project that I can't find posted elsewhere on the blog.  

When Drama Teen was just a little thing, she developed a liking of stuffed tigers. She has quite the collection.  Her favorite was a white tiger she named Siberian.

Siberian pretty much went everywhere with her.  Siberian even flew to Washington State with us on vacation one year.  She was quite happy to reside in the overhead compartment during the flight, much to the delight of several younger flyers seated near us.  

I was fortunate enough to attend the Houston quilt festival in 2005. During the festival, a fat quarter packet with several tiger prints caught my eye.   Those fat quarters just had to come home with me. DT (aka Kiddo) absolutely needed a tiger quilt for Christmas.    I really wanted to let the tigers take center stage so the idea of using simple squares came from that.  One early problem was that one of the fat quarters only had enough tigers in it to make two squares.  So I took pictures of some of her stuffed tigers, including Siberian, and printed those onto fabric.  From that Kiddo's Tigers Quilt came to be.

DT loved that the quilt included her tigers on it, especially Siberian.  At the time it was the perfect size for her to cuddle under on the couch.  She has since outgrown it, so it sits in the closet waiting for the next little one.  

It's certainly not a perfect quilt.  I had to piece one of the tigers to have enough to make a full square.  But at age 6 Drama Teen wasn't the quilt critic she is now, the fabric photos were the coolest thing to her.   It was a fun quilt to make.  I really enjoyed figuring out how to use the fabrics to the best advantage.  Credit for the setting fabric choices has to be given to one of the ladies who worked at the local quilt shop.  She suggested the orange fabric for the sashing and the black fabric in the border.  I had my doubts as they just didn't seem like the fabrics to use for a 6 year old.  But they were exactly right.

Stash Report - Week 6

Last night was the big formal for the Freshman and  Sophomore classes.  Drama Teen didn't have a date, but went with a group of her girlfriends.  She cleans up pretty well doesn't she.  

She had a really fun time.  Unfortunately the rest of the weekend will be focused on getting her science fair project done.  From Cinderella to mad scientist is quite the transition, almost like Jekyll and Hyde.  

Sewing certainly happened this week, but it's not reflected in the stash report.  

Used last week: 0.08 yards
Used in February: 0.08 yards
Used Year to Date:  2.69 yards

But every little bit helps.  Hopefully I'll get the borders done for the 2014 Rainbow Scrap Challenge Sampler soon and be able to make a back for it.  That would make a nice increase in the out going.

Stash Report - Week 4 of 2015

Wow, we are already four weeks into the new year.  Are you still writing 2014 on all your dates?  I find that I'm doing well at writing 2015 on my checks and such, but when I'm typing  my fingers keep straying towards the "4" key, completely missing the "5" key.  I've had to edit more than one Excel and Word document lately 

It hasn't been a bad week.  I was off last Monday to take Drama Teen and a friend dress shopping.  They have a dance coming up in a couple of weeks.  DT had a hard time finding anything that looked good on her.  She finally came home with a deep blue dress that worked well with both her complexion and her figure.  Here's a sneak peak of one of the details. 

She still needs to find some shoes to go with it.  She'll have to wear flats this year.  Her physical therapist and surgeon don't think she's ready for heels just yet, unless she wants to wear her knee brace to the dance.  So flats it will be.  We've seen some cute ones, so she's not too broken up about it. 

I managed to get myself up the to the sewing room most evenings this last week.  I'm not sure it really shows in the stash report.

Even better, no fabric in for the year as yet.  But I'm still deleting all the fabric shop emails so I'm not tempted.  One of the dress shops we visited on Monday was right across the street from my preferred quilt shop.  Drama Teen asked if were stopping and I told her no.  She leaned over from her seat to put her hand on my forehead to make sure I wasn't running a fever.  She was sure I was ill. Funny girl.  So far my fabric diet is working better than my food diet.  At least one of them is going well.
