To Do Tuesday for 03/30/2021

March is just about over.  In just a couple of days we'll be into April and a quarter of 2021 will be in the past.  I'm not a quarter of the way through my sewing ambitions list, but I'm close.  Writing a weekly to do list has been really helpful in keeping me on task. I didn't stay completely on task last week, but that's because the non-stitching plans for the weekend changed.  

Weekly To Do List for 03/23/2021

• Grassy Creek: Press and clean up backing ✔
• Morewood Mystery: Continue to assemble quilt top ✔
• Unity: Make HSTs for clue 6 as leader and ender ✔
• Butterfly Medallion: Stitch a little on it - no progress

The plan for the weekend was to go hang out with the Scientist in Training.  That didn't happen as she had a paper, a presentation, and a lab report all due Monday. One of her chemistry exams was moved from last week to Monday. So it wasn't a good weekend for just hanging out. Since I was home instead of being away, the traveling embroidery project didn't get worked on.  Still it was a productive week. I'm hoping for the same with this week's To Do List.

Grassy Creek: Press and clean up quilt top

I always manage to pick at least one fabric that tends to ravel after stitching.  The yellow is that fabric in this quilt.  So lots of threads to clean up once the quilt top is pressed.  This is my least favorite step of getting to a finished quilt.  We are off work on Friday, so the plan is to bite the bullet and just get this done so I can do more fun stuff the rest of the weekend.  

Secret Easter Sewing

 

I decided to make Easter gifts for the SIT and her roommate.  The roommate's is finished. I need to cut and assemble the SIT's. That shouldn't take too long.  It's my third go at the pattern, I've got the steps down now.  

Morewood Mystery: Continue assembly of the quilt top

I'd be farther along with this if I hadn't gotten off track with the secret Easter stitching. Still I've got three rows put together.  The goal is to finish the Easter stitching and get Grassy Creek ready for quilting. If I make any progress on Morewood this week, I'll be happy.  

Unity: Make HSTs for step 6 as leader and enders

Two of the Step 7 borders are done, so just two more to go.  It seems to take me about a month per border. So it's been slow but steady progress.

The Leader and Ender Project

The weather was beautiful this weekend. We went hiking one day. It was nice to get out and enjoy the warmer temperatures. It's hard to think back a month and remember the deep freeze that was the last half of February.  We'll enjoy spring while it's here, it tends to warm up quickly here. The highs in the mid 70s pass all too quickly and summer has set in before you know it.  

Even with the pretty weather, I did manage to spend some time in the sewing room.  Most of my time this weekend was dedicated to some secret Easter Bunny sewing.  

The Scientist in Training reads my blog occasionally so I can't show the entire project.  This was my try out the pattern version.  It worked out pretty well, so I'm going to proceed with my plan to make two more for the SIT's and roomie's Easter baskets.  I'll let the SIT have the demo if she wants it.  

The other stitching involved finishing border 2 for step 7 of Unity. 

Unity, 2020 Bonnie Hunter Sew-In-Place Quilt Along

I'm happy with how Unity is coming together.  The HSTs that make up the star points in the step 7 border blocks are my current leader and ender project.  It's slow going, but progress has been steady, if not fast.  Unity was started last April, unfortunately it's not going to get finished before it becomes a UFO (by my definition any project over a year old).  That's OK, it should still get finished sometime this year.

Stitching Time: Week 13 of 2021

It's been a beautiful weekend so far.  We worked in a little hiking this weekend, I was definitely ready for some away from the office time.  Normally the sewing room is my sanity, but it was nice to shake things up a bit and spend an afternoon with My Guy.  It hasn't been the easiest week to find just 15 minutes to play with needle and thread. 

• 15 minute days/week = 6/7 days
• 15 minute days/Mar = 26/27 days
• 15 minute days/2021 = 83/86
• Success rate = 96.51%

My six day stitching week was caused by late meetings one evening this week. I was just too tired to even contemplate walking up the stairs to the sewing room after that long a day.  You can share how your week went at the end of the post. 

We took the good SLRs along on our walk and we got a few good shots. 

We hiked along the creek at one of the local state parks. Usually this creek is just a trickle, but we've had so much rain the last couple of weeks, it looks more like a river than the sleepy creek is usually is all summer.  

Water in motion always looks like glass to me, Lots of splashing going on at the bottom of even that short drop.  

I'm pretty sure this is a Woodpecker.  I forgot to ask My Guy what type it is.  My Guy does a lot of wildlife photography, so he's the knowledgeable one on that front.

The only blooming thing along the trails were the Chickasaw Plums.  The red buds are just getting started, but weren't showy enough to be worth snapping at this point.  

I'm hoping we can get some more hiking and photography in before it gets too hot.  It does seem here that we an go from comfortable in March to hot by the end of April.

To Do Tuesday for 03/23/2021

Yesterday was cold and rainy, just really yucky.  Walking to the car after work was really miserable. I'm hoping spring is going to get  bolder and warm things up a bit more before unleashing torrents of rain. But that's not happening this morning, more rain on the way, though it won't last all day.  

That's the weather report, I'll move on to the weekly update on the never ending To Do List. I didn't stitch as much as planned, but the list still got checked off.  

Weekly To Do List for 03/16/2021

• Grassy Creek:  Cut and stitch back ✔
• Morewood Mystery: Finish the block B's, start assembly ✔
• Unity: Continue making HSTs for clue 6 ✔

Three out of three is a good week.  I finished last block for Morewood last night, so I took it to the wire on last week's list.  We have plans for this weekend and work is still pretty nuts, so I'm not sure how much stitching time I'll get in this week.  So I'll keep this week's list pretty simple.

Grassy Creek:  Press and prep backing

The backing is spread out over the cutting table.  I'll give it a good pressing, clean off any threads it picked up from the floor and package it up for sending out.  That should be doable this week.  And if that's all I get done, I'll be happy.  

Morewood Mystery: Continue assembling the quilt top

The last block was stitched together last night and part of the first row got sewn together.  Since there are no seams to match, the assembly process should go pretty quickly.  But with the focus on getting Grassy Creek prepped for quilting, I'm not likely to get this completely assembled this week.  

Unity:  Continue making HSTs for clue 6. 

I'm making a different block for clue 7 than Bonnie used. My version uses half the number of HSTs called for in her version. I've been making these HSTs  as leaders and enders since the end of December. I just finished the last block for the second border strip. At this rate, it will be the end of June before I finish clue 7.  I'm really glad I switched out that block!  

Butterfly Medallion: Add a few stitches

I'll be hanging out with the Scientist in Training this weekend, so I'll take my long term embroidery project so we can sit, stitch and talk.

The Front and Back

It was a quiet weekend, but not nearly long enough.  I'm not ready to head back to work today.  Thankfully, the meeting schedule doesn't look too nuts this week. Maybe I can get caught up a bit.  

It would be nice if work projects were going as well as my stitching projects.  Last week I finished adding the borders to Grassy Creek but wasn't able to get a photo to post.  That was remedied yesterday. 

Grassy Creek, the 2020 Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt

The top hasn't been pressed yet, so please excuse the wrinkles. I'm happy with how it came together. My version is half the size of Bonnie's original pattern.  It's a nice couch sized quilt.  I finished stitching the back together yesterday.

The floral is about 2/3 of the back with the gold making up the final 1/3.  Next step is to give the back a good press, remove any loose threads, then package it for shipping.  That's the plan for this week.  Pressing and cleaning up the quilt top will take a lot more effort, so I'll save that for next week. Fingers crossed I'll get this mailed out for quilting by the end of the month.  So hopefully there will be another finish before the end of April.
