To Do List for the Week of 01/30/2024

Just one more day in January.  January is such a chill month, probably because the weather is so bad, no one does anything.  It always seems that the months go faster the deeper into the year we get. So though the weather this month has not been fun, there is a part of me that is sad that January is almost over.  

The weather has done a good job of keeping me in my sewing room.  Which means I did pretty well with checking off items on last week's to do list. 

To Do List for 1/23/2024

1. SAHRR: Add coping strips and first pieced border ✔

2. Betty: Assemble 9 blocks ✔

3. Indigo Way: Continue assembling blocks ✔

4. Malted Mystery: Continue working on the January clue ✔

5. Scrappy Butterflies: Send out for quilting - no progress

6. Wild and Goosey: Work on green blocks ✔

7. Chilhowie: Continue as leaders and enders project ✔

Check marks on six out of seven is definitely a good week. I'm caught up on both the SAHRR and Betty, the current quilt alongs. Fingers crossed I can do as well this week. The list is pretty much the same.  

To Do List for 1/30/2024

1. 2024 SAHRR (Quilting Gail): Make border #2

The prompt for border 2 as posted over at Anja Quilts, is pick two colors and do whatever you want.  I've worked out what the border is going to look like, but I'm still debating on the fabric to go with the black.  The gray, orange and black splatter print is more than 2 colors, so it probably won't be my choice for this border.  Same with the Argyle print. Though, it's my quilt and I've been known to bend the rules a bit.  But looking at my choices via EQ, it will likely be either the top or bottom fabrics.  

2. Betty (Meadow Mist Designs): Assemble 5 blocks

I'm playing along with the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts quilt along. Ten blocks are finished and I have two weeks to finish the remaining ten.  Hopefully I can whip out those 5 this week. I got behind and did 9 last week.  With 21 pieces per block, it takes a bit to put just one block together.  I've figured out my chain piecing pattern so I don't mix up the pieces, so those 5 should go together pretty painlessly. (Now I've just jinxed myself!) 

3. Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter): Continue assembling blocks.

Not as much progress here as I'd like, but since I was playing catch up with the current quilt alongs last week, it wasn't unexpected.  What's not up on the design wall is all the component parts that were sewn together last week, so there was more progress then what the picture shows.  I'm hoping to get the blocks done and the rows sewn together next month.  It may be slow going, but it would be nice if this mystery didn't take the path of the previous mysteries and end up in a box for a couple of years.  

4. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish January clue, start on the February clue. 

I finished all the sawtooth stars and have started on assembling the middle of the quilt.  This is the fun part where you get to see the design come together. So far I'm pretty happy with my fabric choices. We'll see if that holds when the February clue is revealed.  

5. Scrappy Butterflies (self designed): Send out for quilting.

This didn't happen last week as I wanted to make sure Trudy was willing and able to do the quilting.  She said yes, so it should go out this week. 

6. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Finish green blocks, start on what ever color SoScrappy announces as the February RSC color.  

I should finish 5 green blocks for the month.  That's not a bad total.  Next time I work on green, I'll need to cut some more scraps, there isn't much variety in what's left the bag.  The plan for this year is to just add to the pile of blocks. These blocks are just 3.5" and it will take a lot to make the design I have in mind.  So definitely a long term project.  

7. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as leader and enders project

I'm still working on the last block for the 2022 BH mystery.  The leaders and enders approach is slow, but it at least keeps the project moving. I did so much better at keeping up with this year's mystery.  I may finish it before I finish this one.  

That's my list for this week.  It's ambitious, but not quite as ambitious as last week's list.  Almost half the number of Betty blocks and I decided on a very simple second border for the SAHRR.  We'll see if that helps in progress across the whole list.  Linking up with The Quilt Schmilt: For the Love of Fabric for To Do Tuesday.  

The First of the Year Quilt Alongs

I did this to myself last year too.  Being retired it was so easy to say, "I have lots of time for new projects."  Ha! Maybe that would be true if I'd just stick with one new project after the madness of the Bonnie Mystery that wrapped up New Year's Day.  But no, I really wanted to play along with 2 quilt alongs that started in January.  It took me all weekend, but I'm caught up on both!  

The Just Two Charm Pack Quilts quilt along sponsored by Cheryl over at Meadow Mist Designs kicked off on January 2nd.  I'm making the quilt Betty from the book.  I'm supposed to have half of the quilt blocks made by January 29th.  I finished those a day early. 

I'm not a pre-cut collector, but my blue/purple/green 2.5" strip bins were full. So I raided those blue and purple scrap strips for my version. I don't hate it, but I'm not in love with it at this stage.  But I've got 10 more blocks and the sashing to add, so it's still possible that my feelings on this project will change. I have till February 15th to finish the last 10 blocks.  

The 2024 SAHRR kicked off on January 15th with the center block (you can see all of those here). Last Monday, Wendy at Pieceful Thoughts kicked off the first border of signature blocks.  I actually finished my first border today, just before border two comes out tomorrow. 

I'm pretty happy with how it worked out.  I went completely scrappy last year. I'm not going scrappy this year, I have a limited fabric palette to play with. It certainly goes faster when you aren't hunting up scraps the right size.   The center with the first border is 20" x 22".  I want to end with a lap sized quilt, so border two will probably need to be a larger block.  I'll come up with a plan once the next round is posted at Anja Quilts sometime on Monday, 1/29.

Stitching Stuff: Week 4 of 2024

One nice thing about the cold and damp weather, it makes me want to spend a lot of time in my sewing room.  That's really helped with my stitching time metrics this month. 

• 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
• 15 minute days/Jan = 27/27 days
• 15 minute days/2024 = 27/27 days
• Success rate = 100% 

Not sure how long I'll be able to maintain the 100% level, hopefully I can keep that up till the end of the month at least. 

Next Sunday we'll be in February and longest month will be over.  How are you doing at keeping up with your stitching time?

Week 100 Photo Challenge: Flower(s)

It's been cool and rainy here all week. Grad Girl has had pretty much the same conditions in Texas.  Add in the fact that it's January, the atmospheric conditions for this week's photo challenge limited all but one of us in finding natural subject matter. 

There are several avenues one can pursue if outdoor flowers aren't a real option.  I found my option on my way to the Walmart check out lane.  

Kate: Textures

I ended up with a lot of "nice" flower photos, but nothing really exceptional.  It's been overcast and raining, not the best light to capture details.  But removing the color from the image allows you to focus on shape and texture.  As rough as the surface of the petals looks in this photo, it's amazing that they feel as smooth as they do.

My Guy is hard to keep contained in the house even when the weather is cold, wet and just miserable.  He really needed to do a survey of the eagle nests in the area as this is about the time you can start seeing if there are chicks. But even he had a hard time finding live flowers.  

My Guy: Former Flowers

He found these former sunflowers in one of the nature conservation areas he surveys.  You have to have a special pass to enter this area, so there's not as much traffic in area to destroy these leftovers from our very warm summer and fall.  

Grad Girl's photo requires a bit of imagination.  

Grad Girl: Some Assembly Required

  

Grad Girl has a long time love affair with Legos. Anyone who has followed me for a while has seen a few constructions in previous photo challenge posts.  In the past few years Lego has sold several plant/flower kits.  As her apartment doesn't have the space to put together, much less display some of the bigger kits she did when she was living at home, she's gone for these smaller kits that she can display in a vase.  Added plus, her cat doesn't try to eat these.  This is the Lego Wildflower kit that she got for her birthday earlier this month. 

This week's challenge is going to take some thought, but should be interesting.

 

Definitely a challenge.  Should be fun to see what we all come up with.

To Do List for the Week of 01/23/2024

No power outages with the freezing rain we had from Sunday into Monday.  The roads were pretty much solid sheets of ice till sometime in the afternoon. Thankfully My Guy's company told everyone to work from home, so he didn't have to navigate that. It's supposed to reach low 40's here, I'm ready for a warm up, even just a small one.  

Cold, stay at home weather has been good for my sewing time.  I did pretty well checking off items on last week's list.  

To Do List for 1/16/2024

Definitely good progress for the week.  The weather has made it pretty easy to spend time in the sewing room, you definitely don't want to go anywhere else! 

This week's list will look similar to last weeks. There are way too many to do's on it, but as long as I'm making progress on most of them, I'm going to keep going on all these projects.  

To Do List for 1/23/2024

1. 2024 SAHRR (Quilting Gail): Add coping strips and first pieced border. 

I have my plan for this border worked out, but will need to add coping strips to get the size needed to make the blocks fit around the center.  

2. Betty (Meadow Mist Designs): Assemble 9 blocks

I only completed one block this week, but there are 3 others in various stages of assembly.  Now that I've made one and worked through the assembly process I know when to start the next block to minimize mixing up the pieces. Sewing 21 individual pieces together takes time.  I'm still not sure that my scraps are going to work and play well together, we'll see how it looks once I've made a few more blocks. 

3. Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter): Continue assembling blocks

There are 4 more A and B blocks in various states of assembly up on the design wall.  I'd like to finish all the blocks by the end of the month. It's doable if I have lots of sewing room time.  

4. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Continue working on the January clue. 

Just 2 stars left to make and then I can start assembling the center of the quilt.  That will have to go on the small design wall as Indigo Way is taking up the big one.  There is still time to get this clue done before the February one comes out.  

5. Scrappy Butterflies (self designed): Send out for quilting.

This one wasn't as bad to clean up as some others I've done recently.  I need to find a box and batting, then get it to the post office.  Finding the right sized box is usually the hardest part of that process.  

6. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter):  Work on green blocks

 I got a late start on the green blocks this month, I forgot this was my RSC project for the year.  I won't finish it this year, but any progress on getting the blocks made will move it along.  

7. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as Leaders and Enders project.

I had to make more 4-patches for the last block.  Those are almost finished.  I doubt the last block is assembled before the end of January, but it will definitely be done next month.  

Another long to do list.  My approach will be to concentrate on the active quilt alongs: SAHRR, Betty and Malted Mystery, then do what I can on what's left on the list.  Linking up with The Quilt Schmilt: For the Love of Fabric for To Do Tuesday.  

Progress on the Old and New

We had freezing rain overnight.  During dinner My Guy got a text from work, saying it was a delayed start this morning.  He woke up to a text that said work from home.  The road does look pretty much like a solid sheet of ice.  It's supposed to get above freezing before noon, we'll see if that happens.  It's these kind of days that make me appreciate being retired.  

I used the cold as an excuse to hang out in the sewing room a lot this weekend.  Though the cold is also really conductive to warm naps under a favorite quilt.  So that happened too.  Even with a couple of naps in there, there was good progress on Indigo Way, the 2023 Bonnie Hunter mystery. 

  

I'm a little under/little over halfway on these blocks.  I'd like to get the blocks finished this month. We'll see how that goes, there are two new quilt alongs in progress that I also need to make progress on. So those will be priority.  

In addition, I'm trying to keep up on finishing a few quilts this year.  The backing for the Scrappy Butterflies quilt was prepped last weekend. This weekend I got a good start on getting the top prepped. 

I'm about 80% done with the prep work of cleaning up loose threads and final pressing.  The rest of the clean up should get done today.  Then I need to find some batting and get it ready to ship out.  That should happen before the end of the month.  Scrappy Butterflies is one of my oldest projects, so it feels good to see it getting close to finished.

Stitching Stuff: Week 3 of 2024

We are back to open cabinet doors and dribbling water in the sinks on the outside walls this weekend.  We are supposed to get above freezing today. But then it cools down and we'll get freezing rain overnight, morphing to rain tomorrow (assuming they've got the highs right).  I'm not looking forward to that mess.  So I'll just spend today in my sewing room and worry about what the plan is for Monday when we wake up tomorrow.  

The cold has been really conductive to spending time in my sewing room. With the iron on, it's the warmest room in the house in the evening.

• Success rate = 100%

Week 99 Photo Challenge: Masculine

We are back to the deep freeze again this weekend, with the possibility of freezing rain early Monday.  Thankfully, this week's challenge photo was one the didn't require outdoor shooting. 

It's another card that can be interpreted visually lots of ways.  I had one idea that sorta worked, but my favorite photo was one that just happened to catch my eye as I was walking by with the camera. 

Kate: The Coat Rack

It's the combination of coat rack, jacket and hat that just says outdoor guy to me, like a farmer/rancher.  Of course this is My Guy's stuff, he grew up on a farm.  I'm not sure how old the jacket is, it definitely dates back to college, when he still helped out on the farm when he was home. It's out on the coat rack because this is what he wears when he's out doing bird counts or checking on eagle nests in the area.  

My Guy went in an entirely different direction. 

My Guy: Macho

It's all about the mustache.  He gave me a series of photos with the mustache on various items and it was really tempting to put them all into a collage to show for this week's challenge.  But he picked this one to use for the blog.  This squirrel was a Christmas gift from one of his sisters. It sits on the dining room table and is where we display the challenge card for the week.  

Grad Girl's title for her photo is intended to tell a story. 

Grad Girl: Picture a Scientist

What image shows up in your mind when you see the term "scientist"?  Science was in the past mostly a masculine endeavor. The lab coats don't quite fit women, the generic ones are made and sized for men (the sleeves are too long and if you're curvy, sometimes they don't button in certain areas, unless you get one that swallows you). Where I worked, women weren't given the option to order women's cut lab coats till about 5 years ago.  If you work in an older facility, the height and depth of hoods and lab benches are sized for men. If you are an average height woman, which Grad Girl is, she's too short to reach the back of the hood or across the lab benches without a step stool.  

So this week's approaches ran from typical to humorous to a social statement.  That's definitely variety.  Next week's challenge will be harder to have all those type of images. 

My Guy told me to select a "good" card. When I pulled this one out of the deck, I don't think I met that criteria. January is not necessarily the best month for finding those in the wild.  No telling what we'll come up with over the next week.  

2024 SAHRR: The Center

Last year was my first time participating in the Stay At Home Round Robin (SAHRR) hosted by Quilting Gail. I really enjoyed playing along and ended up with a really fun quilt for the 2023 SAHRR. 

 

This quilt was intended to be My Guy's new TV recliner quilt.  However, Grad Girl decided that it needed to be hers.  She took the last quilt I made for My Guy, so it was time to come up with a quilt she'd like better so My Guy could keep this one.  She'd been asking for an orange and black quilt, Oklahoma State University colors.  So what to use for the center that would tempt her more than the birds in her dad's quilt? 

Her very own black cat, Queenie.  I modified a block pattern from one of the teacher quilts made many years ago and came up with this. (The pattern is out of print). 

Very Queenie like, except for the red/orange eyes.  Queenie's nick name is Shadow Demon, because she can scare the fool out of you when it's dark in the house. So that's the working name of this year's SAHRR, The Shadow Demon.

I'm ready for winter to be over, or at least for this brutally cold stuff to move out.  We've got one more day before we'll see any temps above freezing.  My Guy is working from home today, his offices are closed.  

The cold has been really conductive to spending time in the sewing room where the iron helps heat up the space.  Consequently, there are a lot of check marks on last week's  to do list.

Five out of seven check marks, with progress on the last two items is a really good week. My list for this week looks pretty much the same. 

1. 2024 SAHRR (Quilting Gail): finish center block

 All the fabrics are cut and assembly is started, it just didn't get really far.  It shouldn't take too long to finish up if I'll concentrate on it. 

2. Betty (Meadow Mist Designs): Assemble 5 blocks

I have 4 weeks to make 20 blocks, so if I do 5 a week, I'll have all the blocks ready to assemble into a top by mid February.  

3. Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on clues 4, 5, 7 and 8. 

I'm going for 5 rows of block A with the associated block B. I've got a good start on those.  It would be nice if all the blocks were done by the end of the month. I think that would be a first!  

4. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Continue working the January Clue.

I've almost finished the first set of stars. Just two more and I can start on set 2.  I have all month to finish this clue, so I'm on track for once.  

5.  Scrappy Butterflies (self designed): Prep quilt top for quilting. 

6. Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Work on green blocks

7. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as leaders and enders project.

Cutting and Stitching

It's cold! I know we have it easy compared to those north of us, but once you get past a certain point it's all just cold.  It's -1 F at the moment.  We are supposed to get up into the teens today. That's a heat wave compared to our high of 5 F yesterday. 

The one good thing about the cold and snow is that it's a very good reason to spend most of Sunday in the sewing room.  I spent most of the morning cutting scraps and yardage for the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts quilt a long sponsored by Meadow Mist Designs. 

 I have 2 weeks to make half the blocks for my chosen quilt from the book, Betty. 

Most of the afternoon and evening was spent working on Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter). 

 I've done well this year with mostly keeping up.  At this time last year, I had just finished one block of the 2022 mystery.  Progress will slow down on this project as both Betty and the 2024 SAHRR will become higher priorities. Clues 1, 2, 3, 5 are completed.  So just 4, 5, 7 and 8 left.  

I did get half the pieces cut for my center block for the 2024 SAHRR, but didn't take any pictures of that. I have this week to cut the other half and get that block assembled.

Stitching Stuff: Week 2 of 2024

 

We are two weeks into 2024.  January always seem to pass so much slower than December did.  Maybe it's the cold that slows us down? Most of the US has cold stuff in abundance this weekend. We don't have to be anywhere the next couple of days, so staying home and stitching is definitely our plan.  My stitching efforts for 2024 have gotten off to a good start. 

• 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
• 15 minute days/Jan = 13/13 days
• 15 minutedays/2024 = 13/13 days
• Success rate = 100% 

I'm curious to see how long I keep the 100% success rate.  I can usually manage it in January.  It's harder in February for some reason.  

I've not gotten back to my sewing room clean up yet this year.  I'm still adjusting to the quiet house with Grad Girl and Queenie back in Texas. 

During their visit, Queenie would come down to the office in the mornings and hang out in the window while I wrote my blog posts.  It was nice the have the company in the morning.

Week 98 Photo Challenge: Monster

Not sure what happened that first week of January, but everyone struggled with the week 98 photo card. 

So we took another week to see what we could come up with.  I really wasn't sure what direction to go with my shot.  I was doing a bit of cleaning up and found a potential subject. As I didn't find anything better here's my effort. 

Kate: Mr. Mojo Jojo

Do you remember the Power Puff Girls from Cartoon Network?  That was one of Grad Girl's favorites when she was 5 (that was the only "girly" T-shirt she owned at that age, the rest being Spider Man, Superman or Bat Man).  Mojo Jojo is probably more of a villain then he is a monster, but many of his plans for world domination went monstrously wrong, so I think he still fits the challenge.

My Guy really struggled with this challenge.  He tried a couple of things that just didn't work out. So he went with his fallback photo this week. 

My Guy: Small Arms

 

T-Rex's definitely have the reputation for being monsters, but no one said they can't still be amusing. 

I think Grad Girl has the best photo this week. 

 

The monster behind the closet door was a thing when I was little. The product of one particularly vivid nightmare when I was 4 or 5 (Consequently, I've never been one for horror movies). I don't remember Grad Girl being concerned about monsters behind the door, but she definitely wanted the closet and bathroom doors closed in her room before she went to sleep when she was little. 

This week's card is going to be interesting.  

This may be another 2 week challenge. I'm going to need to think on this one a bit. 

To Do List for the Week of 01/09/2024

With Grad Girl here this last week, it's felt like vacation.  We've had our shopping day and our girls lunch. So it was a nice week on the family fun front. But the consequence is that there wasn't as much time in the sewing room and that shows in the progress on last week's list. 

To Do List for 01/02/2024

Three check marks with progress on one more item really isn't a bad week. I don't regret taking the time with Grad Girl, we've been lucky she could come home for a bit. The older the kids get, the harder it is for them to get home for very long.  So I'll enjoy it while we can.  

I'll have to get used to a mostly empty house again. So hopefully I can get back to my normal rhythm in the sewing room. We have winter weather forecast for the weekend, so that probably means we won't be out and about much.  That's good as I'm back to long to do lists.

1. 2024 SAHRR(Quilting Gail): Make center block

Back in 2013, I made a quilt using the pattern Fat Cats by Lucy Fazely and Michael Burns from the July 2006 issue of The Quilter Magazine.  The cats in that quilt were all calicos. I'm going to rework the block a bit for the center of my SAHRR.  

2. Betty(Meadow Mist Designs): Continue cutting fabrics

I've not made a lot of progress on getting my fabrics cut. Hopefully I'll do better on that this week.  

3. Indigo Way (Bonnie Hunter): Continue working on clues 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8

I've been putting together blocks as I have the component parts available.  I'm almost finished with the clue 3 components.  Looking at where I was with Chilhowie at this time last year, it appears I've done better at keeping up this year.  

4. Malted Mystery (Meadow Mist Designs): Finish clue 6, start clue 7

I'm more than halfway finished with clue 6.  All the pinwheels have been started, but the ones needed for the last 3 aren't quite finished. I should be able to move on the January clue before next week. 

5. Scrappy Butterflies (self designed): Prep backing for quilting

There was no progress on that last week. Fingers crossed I can squeeze it in this weekend.  

6. Chilhowie (Bonnie Hunter): Continue as leaders and enders

7.  Wild and Goosey (Bonnie Hunter): Make a green block

I'm not sure this one will happen, but I wanted to put it back on the list as it's one of the projects on my project list this year.  I doubt it gets finished, but any progress will be good.

Just Piecing and Pressing

It's been a busy week. Grad Girl and I spent one day in Tulsa and then another in Oklahoma City.  We had fun, but it did impact my stitching time this week.  I managed my 15 minutes every day, but sometimes not much more than that. It's OK, she heads back to school tomorrow.  I'm glad we had a chance to hang out so much while she was home.  

All I have to show for the week is a bunch of pinned pieces at my sewing machine. 

At the top is the last of pieces needed to finish off the December clue for Malted Mystery. The rest is all the bits and pieces in progress for Indigo Way.  Bonnie gave the reveal on Friday. I have blocks components pinned but no finished blocks to show off just yet. 

The only other thing I got done this week was to prewash and start pressing the fabrics I'm using for the 2024 SAHRR.

I've been collecting Halloween fabric for years, the SAHRR seemed to be a good place to use a lot of those odds and ends. Grad Girl has already spoken for this quilt.  I need to get busy and make my center block this week.  

Today is Grad Girl's birthday.

So hard to believe she's in grad school midway through her second year.  Happy birthday!
