November NewFO - A Starburst

Thanksgiving has come and gone.  It's hard to believe that it's the last day of November.  Which means that December starts tomorrow and there are only 24 shopping days till Christmas.  Really?  Since that thought is really too scary to contemplate, I'm ready to put it away in favor of something much more fun, the November NewFO linky party over at Cat Patches.  

The NewFO Challenge gives you permission to start something new so you can build up a pile of UFOs for all those other "finish it up challenges".   I've done really well this year, I'm 11 for 11 in 2013.  My UFO pile has grown to just 8, so that's not so bad.  

The November NewFO started off as an experiment for one of my other posts.  I needed to make a mood board and had been eyeing the quilt along over at Little Bunny Quilts. 

I've always wanted to make a quilt of brights coupled with a black background.  Even better, this project would use up some left overs from a previous quilt.  Plus, I already had several border fabrics that would work.   So Starburst became the November NewFO.  Four blocks had been released by the time I got to this point.  I played a bit with fabric placement just to be sure the color schemes would work.

I had to dust off my paper piecing skills, which to be honest are just about nonexistent.  But that's the other advantage to making this quilt, hopefully practice will lead to perfection (or at least some measure of proficiency).  Background fabric had to be ordered as there was not any tone-on-tone black in my stash big enough for this project.  By the time that got here, there was just enough time to make one block before activities associated with the Thanksgiving holiday took me out of the sewing room.

All the points look so nice and sharp.  I only had to unstitch a couple of seams because the pieces weren't big enough.  It always feels like you are working backwards when paper piecing. Hopefully by the time all the blocks are done, I'll feel a lot more comfortable with process.

15 Minute Challenge - A Month of Moods

Monday didn't go exactly as planned.  I ended up at work for a couple of hours, so ended up getting a rather late start to my sewing day. Then when Drama Teen got home from school she asked for a girls "early dinner" out, I agreed.  We've not been able to have our weekly girls night out with all her practices.  So my sewing session ended at about 4, with about an hour more of stitching later than evening. 

I managed to make a start on the Starburst quilt, got a label sewn onto another quilt, the binding cut and partially assembled for Mon Ami.  So it really was a productive day even though turned out not to really be an all day sew in.  

Overall it was a productive week.  

I managed to stitch six out of seven days, one of my better weeks recently.  

It's the last Tuesday in November (scary thought as that means December is almost here), so it's time to wrap up this month's theme of using mood boards to foster your creativity.  Mood boards are collage of colors/images/text often used by designers to convey a look or concept.  Last week I showed a mood board for the Starburst quilt.  After doing a bit more looking in the stash, I updated the board to include some other potential stash fabrics as well as mock blocks. 

I can see where this might be useful if you don't finish a quilt immediately and it gets put away for a while.  You'd get an idea what you were contemplating at the time if you kept the mood board with the project.  It's definitely a design tool I'm going to explore further.  

One last note this week.  After two years of the 15 Minute Challenge posts, I've decided not to continue the challenge in 2014. The challenge has been very good for me and I've met some very lovely people through all the challenge link ups.  But it's starting to feel stale and I'm ready to move on to something else.  At this point, I don't have any thoughts on a replacement challenge, but something may come to me in the next month.  There will be 5 more challenge posts in December, the last being on New Year's Eve.  I'll have to think of how to end the challenge with a bang, so I hope you'll stick with me for the last month.

Design Wall Monday - November 25th

I love long weekends.  I get one this week since I'm off today.  I need to bake some cookies for Thanksgiving this afternoon.  Actually I'm not baking them Drama Teen is, I'm supervising. I also have to call in for a phone conference this morning, but it probably won't last all that long.   But other than that, my family has given me permission to spend the day in my sewing room.  I plan to take full advantage of it.  

A lot of this week has been spent getting ready to start the Starburst Quilt along.  I've starting cutting out the fabrics, but there isn't anything to show on that just yet.  A few more blocks have been finished on the Jigsaw quilt.

The second row of blocks are finished.  The color graduations aren't perfect, but Drama Teen loves it. Since it's her quilt, that's really all that matters.  Cutting the little tabs has been a challenge.  I find I have to lay the block out and fussy cut the tabs so they look right.  Some of the batiks have such strong color graduations that if you cut the tab from the wrong part of the fabric, it doesn't look right.  But I'm enjoying the process on this one.  It's been fun to watch it come together.

Stash Report - Week 47 of 2013

It's been a slow Sunday so far.  Just sipping coffee and checking out the news.  We spent yesterday at the pool watching Drama Teen do this:

She did actually swim some as well, but we were short timers, so I ended up behind the blocks with a stopwatch and no camera for most of the meet. 

Adding in church and dinner out meant not much stitching happened yesterday.  But black background fabric for the Starburst Quilt Along got washed and pressed in between yesterday's events, so I'm ready to start on those blocks this afternoon.  

And that brings me to this week's stash report.  Starburst needs 5 yards of background fabric.  I really had my heart set on black, but of course, the most I had on hand of any one black fabric was 3 yards.  So I ordered some.  In fact, I ordered 4 different fabrics because it's so hard to tell what will work until you actually see it (black isn't always black).  This is what the UPS guy brought me this week:

The fabric in the upper left is being used for Starburst, the other pieces are going into the stash for other projects.  Thankfully fabric doesn't spoil.  I have several projects that I'd like to make that have black backgrounds, so it will all get used at some point.  However, for the short term, the stash report took another big hit.

Plans

It's Saturday morning.  I've spent the morning so far just drinking coffee, reading blogs, and playing with Pinterest.  We have part two of the high school swim meet this afternoon, but the morning is blessedly empty of any "have to do" stuff.  I washed some fabric this morning so I can start my November NewFO sometime this weekend.  While I was pulling the fabric out of the dryer my mind wandered to thoughts of my plans for this week.  I'm off work all week.  Monday, I will be all by my lonesome for most of the day as My Guy as an all day "have to" attend meeting (I'm glad I don't work for his boss) and Drama Teen has school.  Tuesday will be baking day for the holiday and family stuff starts up on Wednesday, but Monday is wide open.  

I really, really need to get a handle on the piles of fabric that need to be washed, pressed and put away.  I've been making slow progress on that front.  But that's not really fun, that's necessary.  The NewFO for November is to start the Starburst quilt along over at Little Bunny Quilts.  The quilt along is on block 4, so I have some catching up to do.  I had to order some background fabric before I could start, so I spent the "waiting" time this week doing a mock up in EQ to check out color placement for the blocks posted.

I'll probably play around a bit more before I make the final decision for the fabrics to use in the first blocks.  So a good bit of Monday will probably be spent getting caught up on this Quilt Along.

I love the swirly stars she quilted.  So making the binding should go on the list as well.  If I get that made and sewn to the front, I can hand sew it to the back while I'm visiting with family over the holiday.  So that definitely sounds like something that should be added to the list.  

I will have some quilting time today, tomorrow and Tuesday as well as Monday before the holiday gets into full swing.  Still I shouldn't be too ambitious.  So that's probably it for my list this week; press and fold a little fabric, get caught up on the Starburst Quilt Along and work on the binding for Mon Ami.

Wordless Wednesday - Last of the Season

15 Minute Challenge - Capturing a Mood

No rushing out the door this morning.  Since Drama Teen was sick yesterday and was still running a fever at noon time, she won't be going to swim practice this morning.  Her fever has dropped, but she was still feeling queasy when she went to bed.  I'm hoping she feels better this morning and can make it to school.

I thought this week was going to be slower paced.  I was in denial. Somehow My Guy roped me into a business dinner tonight with a vendor we both work with.  Wednesday is work out night since DT has swim practice and then Friday and Saturday we have another swim meet.  Last week was a whirl wind of stuff too and consequently there were only 4 days where any time got spent working on quilt projects.  

At least that's one day more than the week before.  I did find a lot of time to stitch on the weekend, so it really wasn't a bad week in terms of what I managed to get done.  

This weekend I also spent some time contemplating what this month's NewFO would be.  I've been looking at two different projects, one is Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice Mystery and the other is Little Bunny Quilts Starburst Quilt Along. Bonnie's will start up when we have family stuff going on with Thanksgiving, so I won't have a chance to get any of it done before the end of the month.  So it's looking like the Starburst Quilt Along is my best option.  Since we've been talking about mood boards for this month's fostering creativity theme, I tried to put one together to check out a potential color palette for the project.  

These bright tone on tones are left over from a previous project.  I'd use black as the background, with the heart print as the large border.  I don't have enough of any of these to use in each block.  I wonder if I have a yellow in the stash that would work?  Hmm, definitely something to look into to.  

I used My Memory Suite to create this mood board.  But you could use Photoshop Elements, Power Point or Publisher as well.  There are a few online tools as well.  One is Polyvore, which is free as far as I can tell (There is a good tutorial for this one over at HouseTweaking). One site had a tutorial on how to create a mood board in Picasa. SampleBoard is another option, but you have to buy it once your 14 day free trial is up. I'm sure there are other tools as well.

I'm still playing around with the best way to use mood boards in my quilting.  But that's part of the creative process, finding out what works for you and what doesn't.  It's always good to try new approaches, no telling what you'll discover.

Monday Design Wall - November 18th

This week is off to a rocky start.  Drama Teen woke us up at about 1:30 this morning with some type of stomach virus.  She's been throwing up and is running a slight fever.  We'll have to see how she's feeling when it's time to get her up for school, but I'm pretty sure she's probably not making it in today.

It was a nice weekend otherwise.  We did some much needed cleaning in Drama Teen's living space.  We still need to tackle her closet, but I think we'll wait till Christmas break to do that.  Even so I still got in a solid evening of stitching on Saturday and then was able to stitch most of Sunday afternoon.  The bits and pieces I've been working on the last few weeks finally amounted to changes you can actually see on the design wall.  All the 8.5" Log Cabin Blocks for Back to Square One are done and clue 9 was finished off by adding another border to that project.

It's almost too big for the design wall.  Next are the star blocks that go with all those Log Cabins. 

Back in September I started a Scrappy Trip Around the World block, which I didn't like.  So I decided make a few more blocks using a controlled palette of green, yellow, and purple.

I like this much better, so I'm going to make a two more and see how that goes.  I've only got one yard of that dark green.  If I like the resulting set of 4 blocks, I'll make blocks till I've used up the green.  That should give me enough blocks to make at least a throw sized quilt.  

Only two new puzzle pieces made it to the design wall for the Jigsaw quilt.

So this one is coming along, just not as fast as I'd like.  This week isn't nearly as crazy as last week was schedule wise, so hopefully there will be more time to stitch.

Stash Report - Week 46 of 2013

Autumn is one of the nicest seasons in Oklahoma.  Temperatures can be cold in the morning, but be in the 60's to 70's by afternoon.   Spring seems to last only  a week or two here at most, but Autumn will be around for a couple of months.  Besides the moderate temps, if we've had rain, it can be really pretty this time of year as well. 

The fall colors here vary from deep golden yellow/orange to brilliant reds.  The color probably won't last much longer.  We had our first hard freeze last week, followed by rain and now wind gusts up to 40 mph.  There will be lots of bare trees after this weekend. 

The cooler temps certainly didn't do much to cool down our schedules.  This week was almost brutal, at home and at work.  This next week should be more sedate (I hope!).  Not much sewing happened this week.  I either wasn't home or was just too tired to stitch on anything.  It's a good thing we have weekends or else there wouldn't be anything to show for the stash report this week.

For the first time in weeks, nothing in.  I've been madly deleting all the fabric shop emails in hopes of curbing temptation.  It worked this week.  On the positive side, all the piecing of recent weeks is starting to show up in finished blocks, which is the unit I use to count fabric as used.  Over a yard and a half out this week, which is nice.  All the 8.5" Log Cabin blocks for Back to Square One Clue 9 are complete.  Those made up a lot of what got counted as going out this week.  

The last NASCAR race of the 2013 season is this afternoon, so I'll be in my sewing room stitching away watching all those drivers go around in circles for a few hours.  The nice thing about auto racing is you don't have to watch each mile, you can just check out how the pit stops go, any mishaps and the restarts after caution to catch the most exciting parts.  That makes it easy to have your eyes on the sewing, but your ears tuned to the race.

15 Minute Challenge -

I'm starting to not like Tuesday.  It's become my morning to get Drama Teen to 6 AM swim practice.  After years of working in a facility with shifts that start that early you'd think I'd be used to getting up and out.  But I've been spoiled, it's been a few years since my schedule required me to be at work by 6.  It's a fast a furious pace to get out the door by 5:45 AM.  I'll be glad when we get to the end of swim season in February!  

I'm still in wrap up mode at work, lots of report writing and performance review discussions.  For some reason that's put me off sewing when I get home at night. I've been more inclined to curl up in the recliner with a good book in the evenings.  This week was even worse than last week in terms of wanting to find stitching time.   

Only three days of stitching this week.  The weekend was my saving grace.  I spent all of Sunday afternoon stitching away.  I did a bit of pinning this evening so I can sit down and stitch up a few blocks the next time I have a chance to get into the sewing room.  Drama Teen has a swim meet tonight and I'm on tap to be a timer.  I doubt we get home in time for me to do much in the sewing room, so it will probably be Wednesday before I have a chance to get to any stitching. 

Though I've not been sewing much, I have been using the time in the recliner to give some thought to this month's fostering creativity theme of making/using mood boards.  It's common in the interior design industry, many who commented had not seen them employed by quilters.  I found a few quilter blogs that explored their use for making quilts.  

Blossom Heart Quilts did a series of mood boards focused on quilting.  Those included fabrics that fit a theme, quilts in specific colors, etc.  She was linking up with Mood Board Monday over at Life as We Know it.  Some of her recent themes have been floral, metallic, taking flight and neon.  After checking out several of their posts, I've got a few ideas on how a mood board might work for me.

Monday Design Wall - November 11, 2013

It was a quiet weekend for a change.  Which is good because this week is going to be anything but quiet.  Club volleyball starts up tonight, which means Drama Teen has some type of practice every night (she'll alternate between volleyball and swimming).  Besides running DT to practices, there is a high school swim meet on Tuesday.  Plus My Guy and I have a work dinner one night and a three day class at work this week.  There may be very little stitching going on this week.  

However, there was some good progress made this weekend, though I don't have a lot of pictures to show that.  I'm almost finished with the 24 log cabin blocks needed for Back to Square One.  I've almost finished another Scrappy Trip block.  There are 5 new Jigsaw "pieces" up on the design wall that I can show off this week.

Piecing these blocks is just about like working on a puzzle.  I cut out each block as I'm ready for it.  The two blocks in row two were pieced because I had the "tabs" cut already.  It's hard to see what the right corner looks like, the lighting in that room isn't great for photography.  It doesn't help that the fabrics are so dark.

Drama Teen likes it so far, which is good since it's her quit.    It's been fun to watch this one come together, though not so fun to piece the blocks.  I'm sure at some point I'll have to unsew a tab assembly, you have to watch which one goes where.

Stash Report - Week 45 of 2013

It's sunny and mild this weekend.  My Guy and I took Friday off work and spent the day running around Tulsa.  Drama Teen was completely bummed by this as she had to go to school.  It was nice to have a "date day".  The rest of the weekend has been taken up with errands and stuff around the house.  I do hope to get some stitching in this afternoon.  

I'm beginning to think that the end of the year is not only hard on weight reducing diets, but on stash diets too.  Every where I look there are some nice sales going on.  I've been admiring Moda's Nature's Basket line for several months.  The fat quarter bundle was on sale last week, somehow it ended up in my cart, along with some yardage.   

No plans for this one yet.  

My Guy asked if I wanted to stop at one of the quilt stores since we didn't really have any firm plan on where we had to be.  I said no, but then we ended up in the vicinity of one, so we stopped.  I wasn't completely happy with my red violet/pink fabric portion of Drama Teen's Jigsaw quilt.  There are a couple of fabrics that just weren't as bright as the others.  So I ended up buying a few more batiks in that colorway hoping that a couple would be good substitutes.

If they don't make it into DT's quilt, I'm sure they will end up in some other project.  

There was a bit going out this week as I've made some progress on my November goals.  Even so, the stash report is pretty heavy on the incoming.

15 Minute Challenge - What's a Mood Board

It's a swim practice morning, which means I have to be lightening fast on the post this morning.  I had really planned on writing this last night, but My Guy had other plans for my time.  So this week, it will be short and sweet.  

It wasn't a stellar week on the stitching front, in part because I really needed to work on some photography projects that are going to be Christmas gifts this year.  So just 4 days in the sewing room this week. 

Back to Square One is moving along and so is the newest project, Jigsaw.  This week will probably be about the same, holiday stuff is going to start being a bigger part of my evening hours. 

It's a new month, that means there is a new fostering creativity theme for November.  I'd never heard of a mood board.  Have you? Wikapedia defines a mood board as a collage of sorts made up of images, text, photos, and samples of objects assembled according to the whims of the maker.  These boards are commonly used by designers to work on concepts and or communicate ideas to others.  Hmm, sounds like an interesting concept.

Design Wall Monday - November 4, 2013

I'm not sure where the last week went.  I'm having a hard time believing it's Monday again.  Saturday was spent in Tulsa at the first high school swim meet of the year.  Drama Team swam one of the varsity relays and they finished second.  She was thrilled. Thankfully, Sunday was quiet.  Laundry ruled the morning, but I was able to get in a nice long sewing session in the afternoon.  

I'm still trying to get caught up on all the clues for Back to Square One.  The 8.5" log cabin blocks are still in progress, so there's been no change in that project.  Not much change in Neutral Gems either.  So it's a good thing there is a new project up on the design wall.

Drama Teen saw the Jigsaw pattern in a quilt shop a couple of years ago and told me she wanted it for her room, but she wanted it done in rainbow colors. It took me a while to accumulate the range of fat quarters to implement the color gradient idea that DT wanted.  It's hard to see where this is going based on the 5 blocks that are up there, the EQ mock up can be found here if you want to see the intended method to the madness.  The blocks are easy, but the organization is a bit of a bear.  Keeping up with where all those little tabs go has been a bit maddening.  I've got quite a system worked out with 2 types of sticky notes and plastic baggies to be sure I get the right "tabs" with the right blocks.

That's it for my design wall this week.  It's fun to have something up on the wall that should move pretty fast.  My other projects are all still in the block assembly stage, so there's not much noticeable  change in those from week to week.  At some point I'll be making lots of progress, but that's probably not happening till 2014 at this point.

Stash Report - Week 44

Did you sleep in an extra hour this morning, or did you forget to set your clock back?  We slept the extra hour this morning.  Both My Guy and I are battling sinus trouble, so we hoped the extra hour of rest would help us cope with the symptoms.  If the extra sleep did help, it's not obvious.  It's not been one of my better mornings.  If I sit down, I'm OK. Being up and about doesn't work so well.  So rather than clean house the plan is to work on some photography projects My Guy and I have going.  

Since this is the Sunday stash report, I really should write about that.  Why is it when one decides to walk the straight and narrow about adding fabric, cool fabrics show up on sale.  Yes I did it again this week.  I gave into temptation and added a bit more to the stash.  It's hard to resist it when it's 50% off.  So what did the UPS guy bring?  

Some tone on tones and black/white print from the Pam Kitty Love line from Lakehouse Dry Goods.  I'm a bit shy on pink, red and black tone on tones in the stash.  No plans for these at the moment, they just seemed like good stash additions.  Though it's not as bad as last week, the damage still smarts.

Well at least when I do things, I do them in a big way.  I'm really going to have to use up more fabric because not buying fabric doesn't appear to work for me.
