I did get in some decent sewing room time this weekend. It was much easier to use the foot pedal by Sunday. A couple of hours of stitching time was enough time to get the final borders on Rhododendron, the 2021 Bonnie Hunter Mystery.
The purple makes a nice final frame. I stuck with Bonnie's layout, except for the borders. I didn't want to make any more of those flying geese, so I did my own thing with the pieced border. This top finishes at about 80" x 80". Now it will go into the closet with the other finished tops until I decide on a backing for it.

Love your rhododendron! With your continuous colors for the blocks, it really looks striking and not like hers at all. And your border is perfect; it frames it nicely and adds a nice touch. Hooray for the flimsy!
ReplyDeletethe storms all missed us too and fizzled out before they got to us
ReplyDeleteGosh that looks great!!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad the storms missed you they looked scary
and yay to be back stitching a little!!
I'm so glad you didn't need to go to the storm shelter this weekend; those storms sounded rough. Congratulations on getting the final borders on Rhododendron - it looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYea for a finished top! I like how you made Rhododendron your own. And, hey, good news on spending more time at the sewing machine.
ReplyDeleteYour version of Rhododendron Trail turned out so well. I like the borders and especially the colorway. The tornado outbreak was certainly widespread.
ReplyDeleteRhododendron Trail looks great, Kate! I'm glad you were able to get that border on. Also glad you didn't have to go to your storm shelter - those storms looked bad!
ReplyDeleteI thought of you this morning as I read about the tornado that devastated Sulphur. I'm glad the storms stayed away from you.
ReplyDeleteI always like to see quilters who feel free to "adapt" Bonnie's mystery quilt patterns. I foresee down the road, lots of Bonnie quilts turning up in thrift shops and antique malls and people wondering why there are so many that all look alike. Good for you to doing your own thing.
Pat
Your Rhododendron quilt top is a beauty! The purple border is the perfect frame for all those lovely blocks. Fabulous your knee is healed enough for you to sit at the sewing machine, and fabulous too, you were safe from those storms.
ReplyDeleteGlad you’re able to get back to sewing. You quilt turned out beautifully, and you’re right about that purple border. Just lovely.
ReplyDeleteI love how you finished your border, these flying geese seem to direct the eye towards the center of the quilt. I love yellow and purple together! Bravo for this beautiful finish!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy that you weren't hit badly by the storm, and for your knee recovering. Thank you for sharing.
Yay, sounds like things are starting to get back to normal! Glad you didn't have to make a run for the shelter. The purple really does make a nice frame for Rhododendron. I like your borders instead of more flying geese.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful finish! I love that you went rogue on those borders--they're great!
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how anxious you get during "storm season". I am glad you did not have to use the shelter. We have had a rainy weekend, but thankfully no damage. Your rhododendron quilt is absolutely gorgeous, Kate.
ReplyDeleteHooray, congrats on the finished quilt top! Glad that you weren’t impacted by that round of storms, it has been a busy spring through the Midwest and south, hasn’t it?
