To Do Tuesday for Week of 8/18/2020

Hard to believe that August is more than half over.  I'm not sure where the last week went.  I did get in quite a bit of stitching time, though I didn't finish last week's To Do List.

Weekly To Do List (8/11/2020)

  • Storm at Sea: Prep top for quilting - progress
  • Frolic:  Finish borders
  • Unity: Finish step 3, start step 4 - progress

Only one to do checked off the list for the last week.  That's a pretty big check mark as it means another quilt top is finished. There was good progress on the other two items, just not enough to check them off the list.  So those two will go back on this week's To Do List.

Weekly To Do List (8/18/2020)

Storm at Sea: Finish prepping top for quilting

I'm about half way finished with pressing and de-threading the back of this project.  The dark blue is the biggest problem, the teal and purple are Batiks, they don't fray much at all.  I should have all the pressing and clean up done by the weekend.

2019 Christmas Mystery:  Make backing

These are the four most likely backing fabrics.  Though I'm not sure there's enough of the holly fabric. The plan for this week is to decide on a backing and get it pieced.

Daisy Chain - Decide on borders

Daisy Chain Mystery
2019 Little Bunny Quilts Mystery

Daisy Chain is the next quilt on the 2020 quilt plan to be finished.  I had planned to use the rose print as the border, but I'm not sure it really works.  I used left overs from several other projects to make this quilt and don't have anything left from those to make a border.  These fabrics are all much older stash fabrics, bought when I was still trying to find my "style" as a quilter.  I much prefer bold and bright, so don't have a lot in the stash to pick from.  It may take me a couple of weeks to find the right finish, but I can at least start considering options.

Unity: Finish step 3, make HSTs for Step 4

All that's left of step 3 is the one inch borders from the background fabric. Those are cut and one is pinned on ready for stitching.  I got that far before I finally bit the bullet and laid the SAS project out on the cutting/pressing table.  Step 4 calls for a variation on the friendship star block. The first of two of those blocks are under construction.

That's the plan for this next week.  If I can get the Storm at Sea quilt prepped and packaged for shipping out, it will be a good week.  Linking up with Home Sewn by Us for To Do Tuesday.

  1. you have a lot going on there - it looks like you are into mystery quilts - I have never been I always want to see what the project will look like in advance - I don't trust my color instinct I guess

  2. Hi Kate! Oooh, those Christmas backings. The one looks just like a package waiting to be opened - you know, one of those, ooh - fancy - they must REALLY like me packages. I think the holly and the cardinals look great together - I had to double-check to see if they weren't the same. Thanks for linking up! ~smile~ Roseanne

  3. That is definitely a big checkmark for finishing those Frolic borders, Kate! I'm channeling you as I de-thread the back of my quilt flimsy, too. Have a great week!

  4. I think the border looks great. Remember, quilts aren't viewed from a short distance, they are seen from further away.

  5. De-threading is so time consuming!! I have one, that the more I trim the more it ravels! At least that’s what it feels like! Progress is progress, and that’s what counts! I think the holly print and the lower left plaid could be pieced into a great backing! Which ever you choose will be perfect!

  7. I'd use the both the holly and cardinal fabrics with a band of the Christmas wrapping paper (upper right corner) as a band between them. You're making great progress on a lot of different fronts.

  8. For me, sometimes having to make up my mind about border and backing fabric is the hardest part. Actually, deciding how to quilt it is the hard part.

The Christmas fabric backing is so pretty and feels like it should be wrapping paper instead of fabric.

    Good luck with your goals!

  9. Yay for a finished top! You may have already chosen but personally I'd go with either of the holly fabrics rather than a plaid--as much as I love them!--for a backing, just to avoid having to match up the lines (whereas the holly would be a little forgiving). Not to mention, sometimes it's not printed straight and might have that advertised if near edges of quilt. But either way, they're all 4 beautiful fabrics for a quilt. Good luck on your to-do's! I don't know where August is disappearing too, either!
