Borders, Blocks and Other Stuff

The Scientist in Training headed back to campus to start her summer research program yesterday afternoon. The house seemed pretty empty after she left.  She'll be back for Father's Day, which really isn't that far off.  But it's going to take me a bit to get used to her not being here.

The weather has gone from cool and rainy to hot and humid over the last week.  I'm guessing the mold levels are pretty high, as my sinuses haven't been very happy this week.  It wasn't the most productive week ever in the sewing room, but there was some good progress on several fronts.  Three of the four white borders are attached to Storm at Sea.

Storm at Sea:  Quilt self designed

This quilt has gotten so big, it's hard to get a photo of the whole thing.

There was also some progress on getting Frolic assembled.

                                         Frolic: Bonnie Hunter 2019 Mystery

The last block is almost finished. I'll need to cut more sashing pieces to finish the assembly.  Hopefully Frolic will be ready for borders by next weekend.

Not much to show on Unity, the flying geese in the step 3 sawtooth stars take some time to make.  Though I did get one star assembled.

I need over 30 of these little stars for the step 3 border. That's a lot of flying geese.

Lastly, there was more stitching on face masks.

I really like this bright periodic table fabric. It's probably my favorite of out of all the masks from this weekend.

That's the last of my science/chemistry themed masks. These are all going to work to share with people who haven't had good luck with the surgical masks the company has made available.  I'm hoping the t-shirt loops will be easier on peoples ears. My Guy has really liked his masks made from this pattern.

That's pretty much my week of stitching.  Linking up with Monday Making, Monday Design Wall and Main Crush Monday.

  1. I'm sure your daughter is happy to go back to campus. The new requirements (distance, etc., etc.) will make things interesting. The science-theme fabrics are great! Since masks are de riguer now I expect we will be making more -- but not at the frantic pace of the first weeks of the pandemic. Has Frolic been up on your design wall as you've worked on all the other projects? I'd think its presence would be an incentive to finish it. I like the bold colorway.

  3. I've seen some lovely Unity quilts, already finished tops. However several of the ones I've seen didn't do the whole quilt. It seems like it is very easy to stop at one of the rounds and call it done, or add a finishing border. Looking forward to seeing all your pieces making progress. Thanks for the info on the mask pattern. I've wound down making them. But I really like what you've shown. I'm assuming that is t-shirt fabric for the ear pieces? I'll check out the pattern for sure.

  4. You're making good progress on everything, Kate! Frolic is really getting close. I loved the close-up of your star block for Unity - that center fabric is so pretty! Good luck to the SIT on her summer research project!

  6. I think that's a lot of progress given that you had to see off your scientist in training. The bright periodic table print is fun and I hope your colleagues appreciate your time, caring, and generosity. Have a good week!

  7. The science themed fabric was perfect for mask making. If you have to wear them, then fun masks might make it easier.

  8. I didn’t realize your background for Storm at Sea was polka dot. Now I like it even better than before! The colors in frolic are just so pretty. I know I say that every time, but I really love those colors together. Thanks for the link to the mask pattern. I’m going to make some more masks. I think we’re going to be wearing masks for a while. Opening up is fine, but the virus is still out there. Oregon had its highest one-day number of new cases a few days ago

  9. I know you will be looking forward to seeing the SIT in a couple of weeks, Kate! Great looking batch of masks. I found a different pattern that works for my family, but I still want to try the one you are using.

  11. I love the cute masks!
Your storm at sea border is so so pretty!

Our weather has flip flopped in the opposite direction. We were 85 degrees a couple of days ago and it is expected to freeze tonight. We had to cover the garden.

  12. You're right...flying geese take some time to make. I like using the Wing Clipper from Studio 180. I don't like to buy a lot of specialty rulers, but this one helped me make flying geese that are straight and not so wonky. I love the masks you made - they look so bright and happy. I'm going to check out that pattern. I just bought some softer, thinner elastic that I think will feel better on the ears. Thanks for linking to MCM Kate!

  13. Love all the great colors in your post! My kids are off at day camp now and the house is so quiet without them, can’t imagine what it’s like when they head to college!
