Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Still in the Black

Hard to believe it's September already and that Labor Day weekend is here.  The days will go faster now, or at least it seems that way to me.  Maybe it's because the days will get shorter from here on out.

My days certainly seemed short this week.  I did spend some time in the sewing room working towards finishing up Grand Illusion.  I did something I've never done before, I sewed the binding to the wrong side of the quilt and didn't catch that until I had finished.  So that was 339 inches of stitching that had to be ripped out. After 2 nights with the seam ripper, it's finally sewn on the front correctly and I can start hand stitching it to the back.

My three evening diversion with Grand Illusion kept me from finishing up the black Twinkle Stars. Only one more made it to the design wall.

Twinkle Stars, Tutorial by Andrea Feldbush of Soscrappy

Since it's a long weekend, I'm hoping to get the last two black stars finished up and make a start on the orange ones.  At the moment, I'm going for a second cup of coffee and then taking a peak at all scrappy orangeness posted over at Soscrappy.

  1. Oh my. So much unsewing to do! In a pinch I think you could pass off the starry black twinkler as having some orangey-gold in it.

  2. Ooh, the pink and black is quite sharp too. I had to do a mass of unsewing this week too. I spent a good chunk of the time chastising myself for not paying better attention. Good luck with the hand stitching!

  3. Oh, my...I never hope I'm that close to a quilt finish and have to rip off the binding! I'm always afraid I'm going to do that since I add binding by machine for donation quilts for kids and sew to back then front but other quilts get sewn on the front and hand stitched on back.

My fav is still the spider web star.

  4. Wondering why you didn't just turn the binding to the front? Not criticizing; I figure you had a good reason ....

  5. Goodness, I don't think I would have had the patience to rip out all that stitching. In my mind, there's no reason not to hand sew the binding to the front. It still covers the raw edges of the quilt, right?

  6. Those stars are beautiful, they really sing.
If I'd made that mistake with the binding I'd just chalk it up to experience and hem it onto the front instead of the back. In fact I thought at first that was how it was supposed to go, having seen Leah Day demonstrating that in a video!

  7. That binding fiasco sounds exactly like the sort of thing that I would do ! :) I once had most of it on then realized I didn't have right sides together ( Solid colors ) and there was a bit of ripping after that.

    Stars are beautiful :)

  8. Love your stars. Oh my gosh, I'm so far behind on this one. Hoping to catch up during September.

  9. Every time you show those stars, I get itchy fingers wanting to make some, too... I love them so much!
I'd have just carried on stitching the binding, too. If the final stitching was machine stitching that would show, it would make a difference, but hand stitching? Life is too short.

  12. Strangely, I sew my binding to the back every single time. Then I turn it over the front, and stitch it in place using a bobbin thread the same color as my backing. A large throw to a twin sized takes 1.5 hours from cutting the binding to admiring a finished quilt. Liberating!

Your black stars are looking very Halloween-ish. This will be fun, I'm sure, when it's ready.

  16. I admire your tenacity, Kate. I would've shouted an expletive & just kept sewing. ;)
The black twinkle stars are, as all of those twinkle stars, gorgeous. The blue/green/white dotted star is my favorite. Makes me think of our big universe & all those glorious stars in it. Happy Sewing!

  17. I get irritated at myself when I mess up, but I'm always glad I took the time to fix it. Yay for you for patiently ripping off that binding! I would've done the same thing. :)

  20. Beautiful black blocks. I always sew my binding to the back of my quilt. Then I turn it to the front and machine sew it using thread that matches the binding in top thread and thread that matches my backing in my bobbin.
