Welcome to June. I'm still trying to figure out where May went. Though I am glad today is Friday. My Guy and Kiddo are on their way back from almost a week in Colorado. It's been incredibly quiet around here. When I'm home, I find myself wondering where they are before the memory kicks in that they aren't even in town. On Tuesday, 5:30 rolled around and I started to rushing around getting the computer shut down and packing up my briefcase, thinking I had to pick up Drama Teen from swim practice. Took me a minute to realize that wasn't necessary. It's amazing how powerful our routines can be.
I travel occasionally for business, so am somewhat used to being on my own for a few days, but it's really been weird to be on my own at home. The last time I was on my own at home for any significant time was before Drama Teen was born. It's been a nice few days. No one to feed, no one walking into the sewing room asking for help with whatever, no one to drop off, pick up or otherwise ferry around. It's been an interesting, though strange, change of pace.
On the other hand, it's hard to sleep at night without someone in the house. Why is it you hear all those weird house noises when no one else is home? I miss having someone make decent coffee in the morning (mine for some reason just isn't as good), plus the morning kiss over that first cup of coffee isn't happening either. I can get decent coffee at work, but not that kiss. All that chasing after the Drama Teen usually means she and I get a fair amount of time to chat in the car between activities. I've missed our talks on the mystery of boys, the state of the world, what we want to be when we grow up, etc.
This week there are few favorite things. The first is time to be just me for a few days. The most important two are My Guy and Drama Teen. The last thing is the reminder that just being me gets old pretty quickly, life is much more meaningful and fun when you share it with family.

So, what do you want to be when you grow up? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI imagine I'll have times like that sometime, just not any time soon. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great reminder of the balance we need in our lives between alone and family.
ReplyDeleteI think those alone times remind us of how much we appreciate having family around. (although I vet it was lovely to have the pressure off for a few days ) Sounds like this week has given you the best of both worlds!
ReplyDeleteGood thing you had quilting and blogging to keep yourself entertained through the quiet hours :) I can't think of any time that I've had the whole house to myself for more than about 48 hours since I've been married and had kids. It would be an interesting time for sure. I know what you mean about night noises, though!!
ReplyDeleteGreat FTF, got to say I love my quiet few hours when the kids are at school and I am at home, though most of my day's off are spent running around doing errands but those days that I am not it is truly golden. Can't say I have spent many nights on my own since having the kids but I know about all the noises that you suddenly hear, least I would Coco the Attack dog to protect me, though most of the time she just barks at her own reflection in the window at night.

ReplyDeleteGlad you had a break from the running around, but enjoy your time together when your husband and daughter return!
ReplyDeleteWere they traveling for a swim meet or visiting family?
an empty nest is definitely a different nest! there's so much alone time to savor ... but knowing the door will fly open with laughter and hugs ... that's a great feeling.
ReplyDeleteTime to yourself is lovely but balanced with loved ones company I think is just about perfect. I am the same...hear every creak and twinge the house makes when by myself too.
