Weekend Stitching: A Little of This and That

Weekends are just never long enough.  I'm not sure what happened to Saturday, it just evaporated it seems.  Sunday we spent the day in Tulsa celebrating the Scientist in Training's birthday with lunch at PF Changs, followed by cheesecake elsewhere.  It was a fun day in spite of the cold rain that fell most of the day.

I did get in some stitching.  All the rows of Geek Chic are sewn together, so that much got wrapped and given to the SIT with her other gifts.  She loved it.  Now to get the border on it and get the backing pieced so it can go out for quilting.  There wasn't time for photos before it was wrapped, hopefully I'll have some later this week.

Two more Perkioman Valley blocks from the Ventura Modern Quilt Guild were finished.

So these four will go out in the mail to Carol over at From My Carolina Home to be used in quilts for the California Thomas Fire victims.

After playing around with the block pieces for Bonnie's On Ringo Lake mystery and staring at the options on the design wall, I finally decided to just make the blocks according to her directions.

On Ringo Lake, Bonnie Hunter 2017 Mystery Quilt

The fabric choices this year didn't work really well. The gray is really too dark and doesn't show up against the black and boy the yellow really dominates the block.  It does look better with the sashing strips added. I'll use up the pieces that are already made and see how many blocks that makes and go from there.

  1. It is an interesting block. I bet the gray is more obvious in person. Keep on keepin' on!

  2. I like the sharp contrast of the corners with the flying geese. (My post today includes split 9-patches for the fire project and On Ringo Lake, too!)

  3. Love the blues in your block, nice that it will be used in a quilt for fire victims.

  4. I like your ORL blocks a lot! The red pops out to me more than the yellow.

  7. Hi Kate,
You are sure correct - the weekends go by WAY too quickly! Saturdays always whip by - probably because we are having fun doing errands or catch up stuff. I can see what you mean about your gray being dark in On Ringo but the blocks still turned out nicely. Perhaps different that what you expected, but worthy of finishing anyway. At least I think so! ~smile~ Roseanne

  8. I like that you're giving ORL your own spin with your colors, and I actually like how the yellow is featured. I'm sure you can make the blocks work for you, knowing that you can audition optional settings or sashing or alternate blocks in EQ.

  9. I like your yellow, red, and black together! Sometimes those darker colors are hard to photograph, but look good in real life. You reminded me that I'm planning to make some of those blocks to send to Carole, too. I'd better get on that!

  11. PF Changs is my choice for celebrations and good Chinese food too. Thanks for sending blocks for the fire victims. I should but probably won't -- I'm behind on commitments so will focus on that for the time being.

  12. That looks like a whole different quilt than Ringo Lake! It's amazing how colours and values change how blocks look!

  13. Yours and my Perkiomen blocks would play very nicely together if they get sewn up into a quilt top together! Too bad on the Ringo Lake mystery...that's the trouble with mysteries but I still think they're fun!

  14. Very interesting mystery blocks, I like how the yellow and red pop off of the darker background.

  15. Are these your original colors for the mystery block? I really like them! But it doesn't look gray on my computer. I remember your other blocks did look gray.

Did you give SIT the pieced rows and then take it back again? lol

  16. Well, I love your Ringo Lake blocks. I can see why you think the gray is too dark, but really, it looks fine. Also, I love your scrappy blue. That would make a pretty Rainbow Scrap block.

  17. I actually really like the dominant yellow in your blocks. It makes a very cool pattern and looks strikingly different than many of the other ORL pieces. It's almost Amish looking to me. I'm glad SIT liked her Geek Chic!

  18. Kate, I really like your Ringo blocks! The effect of the values is completely different from BH's, but who cares whem it turns out nice? Your contrast is attractively striking, and the gray/black interplay creates a visually simpler pattern with a non-boring background. It makes it look like the yellows and reds are floating. Super cool.

  19. I like the blocks. I'm not specifically looking for black vs gray, though, and think the dark plays well with the red and yellow.

  20. I like your ORL blocks and don't think the yellow dominates. It adds light. The red pops as well as the yellow. Looks good

  21. I think the blocks look good - hope that you come to like them more as you put the quilt together!

  22. I'm another one who really likes your ORL blocks!
