Since the calendar showed a lot of time away from my sewing room this month, it seemed wise to pick a pretty easy goal that didn't involve the sewing machine. The lack of additional white fabric for sashing and borders is what stalled out this project. You can't finish a project without a plan so that was the goal for this month, figure out the final setting.
No problem, that actually got done while we were still on vacation. One morning session with EQ and a final setting plan came together.
Using borders between the blocks and the borders would allow me to use a white that reads the same as the white in the blocks, without it being obvious that it's a different fabric. I was happy with that approach. So goal accomplished, pretty much the first week of the month. I didn't stop there. The stash closet was raided and strung out all over the cutting table before the sashing and border fabrics where chosen.
Now that I have a plan and the fabric chosen, there was nothing else in the way of getting this project moved off the UFO list. The blocks aren't sewn into rows yet, but there's been good progress on getting the sashing sewn on.
Scrappy Coffee Cups won't be a finished flimsy by the end of the month, but all the blocks should be sewn together by then. That's a lot more progress than I expected this month. It's been fun to see this project come together. Hopefully by the end of August this one will be a finished flimsy. That might just the goal for next month's OMG.

ReplyDeleteI think I remember you showing me this about a year or so ago when I was trying to decide what to make for a coffee themed auction basket. It sure is turning out great! I even liked it when you first showed me just the blocks!

ReplyDeleteI love this quilt, Kate! The green sashing will be perfect for it! I found a coffee cup pattern online and made a couple just for fun. I think this would be a fun block for a rainbow of colors!
ReplyDeleteFiguring out the design bit is one of the hardest parts I think but you did it perfectly. The sashing enhances all the different cups and the borders set it off beautifully. You may have added them to disguise two different whites but the quilt wouldn't have been as beautiful with out it. Congrats on your goal.

ReplyDeleteI was trying to pick a favorite coffee mug or a teacup+saucer. I am torn between the bright orange floral in the top row and the deep Persian blue in the bottom. Who gets this one?
