I really like this set of blocks. Hopefully they won't be so dark as to look funny mixed in with all the other bright blocks. The big design wall is full at the moment, so there hasn't been a chance to throw up all the blocks and see how things are coming along. Hopefully there will be a chance to do that next month so I can see what blocks are needed to finish off the design.
I've started a couple of the orange Twinkle Star blocks, but alas have nothing completed to show off this week. So my orange block this week will have to a virtual one.
I first saw this block done all in pink over at Maureen's Mystic Quilter blog. It got pinned to my Pinterest board so I wouldn't forget it. Then yesterday I came across the pattern this block comes from. It's called Geese Migration, designed by Cynthia Brunz. It was a free down load from Sew Mama Sew. I'm thinking this would be a great block for next year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I have a lot of 2.5" strips that were cut for the Twinkle Star blocks this year, this block would use up some of those. I did some playing around in EQ and came up with this as a preliminary plan.

I love how black really makes the colors pop. But I've been wanting to try gray as a background fabric too.

I would definitely make the blocks in the full spectrum of colors, these EQ mock ups are for me to see if it's a project I really want to make. There are some other color placement options to play with before a final decision is made. But I see lots of potential with this project. Trouble is there are a couple of other potential scrappy projects for next year that I'd love to make. Good thing I've got a few months to play around and decide what to make next year.
There are lots of very vivid oranges on display over at Soscrappy. I'm going to grab a second cup of coffee and go flirt with the temptation of all those fun projects.
That's a cool design and a good way to use up bits. Thanks for the link. Think I'll put it on my list for next year.
ReplyDeleteOh, virtual quilts are so much fun! Best of all, they come together so much more quickly than the real ones. Looks like a great block for next year, regardless of which way you set it.
ReplyDeleteThe black does make them pop but that grey reminds me of ice, snow, mist, fog...I like it a lot!

ReplyDeleteI love that flying geese block... it would be a great scrap user, and not too difficult to piece, with just enough sewing to keep my interest.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I evernoted that flying geese block too as a potential RSQ for next year. So many choices - but how nice that you can experiment virtually before committing to a project for the year.

ReplyDeleteThe orange block would be great in all the intense colors. I prefer the black background because those jewels really glow. Whatever you come up with will be a winner, so good luck!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't think the black blocks go with the rest, just make MORE and turn them into their own quilt!! It will look FABULOUS!!!

I think your black Twinkle Stars will add a good contrast to all the bright colors, just scatter them evenly around the quilt top.

ReplyDeletePleased to see that you are thinking of ming a quilt with this block. I only made four of the blocks as I found I was spending a lot of time getting the perfect piece of fabric! At that time I had a lot going on in my life. However, The pattern by Cynthia was in a magazine and that inspired my blocks.
ReplyDeleteI love your black stars. Great idea for next year's RSC too. I could use an EQ program right about now help me figure out what I want to do with my stacks of orange prints (those that are too big for the RSC effort).
