Design Wall Monday - A Finished Flimsy

It was hot this weekend, so I spent as much time as possible in my sewing room. Well at least when I could get away from report writing and laundry (Yes I'm up against another work deadline, but at least the end of this project is in sight).  The last border strip was added to Grand Illusion on Friday night.  After spending a bit picking off all the loose strings, it was finally ready to photograph.

Grand Illusion, A Bonnie Hunter Mystery
It still needs a good pressing, which will likely happen sometime this week.  The plain borders do a lot calm down the busyness of this quilt.  I like the bright colors, but I probably should have selected some lighter shades, as it is, it seems that the pink, green and teal are all the same intensity.  A bit of variation in that might have toned it down some more.  Though Grand Illusion is not one of my favorites, its far from being hideous.  The backing is all pieced, pressed and ready to go.   Now I just need to prep the top for quilting.  Once that's done it will go off to Trudy for quilting.

  1. Your Grand Illusion quilt looks wonderful! I like your fabric choices, and the fact that yours is not scrappy makes it much less busy than the scrappy ones. Beautiful!

  2. I agree with Julie, a lot less busy than the scrappy versions. I like your clear colors, but I still think the pattern looks like confetti strewn about .....

  4. It was a very busy and stressful pattern, but I agree with the others that the choice of consistant color tamed this. And the solid borders really work well to frame it. Congratulations on the flimsy finish.

  5. I like the cool mint/teal border. GI was not my favorite BH mystery, though I've seen some wonderful interpretations.

  8. Wow, this is the best version of Grand Illusion that I have seen! I think you did a great job of picking colors, especially considering that you had no idea what the quilt was going to look like. Beautifully done!

  9. Yours is a wonderful version of Celtic Solstice. Yes, the borders do help to contain the excitement. I'm really impressed you have it finished in less than a year. You'll have it on a bed before the next one begins! Good for you.

  12. I truly like all the bright colors. The design is busy, but there's so much to look at, I just want to keep staring at it to see what else I find. Great job finishing the top!

PS...I should quit blogging more often. I stitched up 3 pinwheel blocks for pillows, a matching pinwheel table runner, and a baby quilt! Now I'm finishing up a t-shirt quilt I started last Winter. Sewing life is pretty good!

  14. You did a rally good job with picking colours. That is the part always scare me off and I tend to just pick out fatquarter bundles so I don't have to think :))

  15. I love the color choices, the teal, green and pink having similar value but one on the opposite side of the color wheel gives great motion to the interior of the quilt. And when you get tired of moving around the inside, you get to take a break on the soothing border. Then back in for more fast paced quilty fun. Love this one.

  17. I think your Grand Illusion is one of the best color combinations I've seen on the net. This was not one that I did. Still haven't finished the last two. The solid borders do calm it down, but I like bright, so I'd be happy if it were mine. Can't wait to see your pieced backing for it.
