I've made progress on getting all the Rainbow sampler blocks sewn together, but I forgot to take a picture of my progress before the next row was taken down so the sashing could be added. Those blocks are still laying by the sewing machine waiting to be stitched.
The 11th butterfly block is finished.

I wasn't sure about using the gray, but it turned out nicely. I really like the fabric in the upper wings. Block 12 will be mainly white. Since the background fabric is a light blue, that should work out OK. I hope to get that one made this weekend.
I've been playing with setting possibilities for the butterfly blocks. This is the current front runner.
I like the Irish Chain setting, but am not certain about the border fabric. This one may be too light. I tried dark borders, but didn't like them as well. If I switch to white as the second color in the Irish Chain blocks, the border fabric seems to fit better.
Which one do you like best? Any other suggestions?

Gray is my new favorite neutral. Your gray butterfly is just what this quilt needed.

ReplyDeleteSo glad that you are almost done with your quilt! The white in the chains almost suggests clouds to me, which is perfect for a sky full of butterflies. Sorry to hear that DT was sick. Two of my three also missed a day of school this week, but they are starting to feel better now. It is no fun to deal with sick kids!

ReplyDeleteI agree that the setting with the white squares works better. The darker blue squares in the first version are too distracting from your beautiful butterfly blocks.

ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! I like both versions. My eye prefers the first one, but the second makes the butterflies more 'free' like they're flying in the sky!

ReplyDeleteThe pale gray butterfly is so ethereal. Just love it. Your second colour layout allows the butterflies to pop. The first colour layout really draws focus to the Irish Chain blocks. I think you want to focus on the butterflies so I think #2 is the better choice.
ReplyDeleteThe gray in the butterfly is so elegant--I love it! And I chose the layout with the white chain going through it. That works best, IMHO, with the border fabric.

ReplyDeleteLove the grey butterfly! I'm going to be different - I like the blue irish chain setting but I'd swap the outside border to the light blue background and then a dark blue binding =). See, I have to be different! It has been so much fun watching your butterfly's grow all year. Can't wait to see the white one.
ReplyDeleteI like the blue Irish chain. I think it frames the butterflies. To me the white seems like it is of equal importance to the butterflies.

ReplyDeleteI like the first layout, but then I'm a sucker for blue. Gray is quickly becoming my favorite "white" in quilting. It's funny because I love gray and have a lot of clothes in that color!
