I've worked a job for more years than I care to count. My day is often spent reading, taking notes, creating spreadsheets, punching numbers into a calculator, writing emails or even worse writing reports. All in a day's work, at least I get paid for it. But I remember having homework, the kind you don't get paid for. Drama Teen usually has her homework all done by the time I pick her up from the library after work. However, yesterday she was struggling to understand a science assignment on estimating and calculating ratios. You remember ratios right? For example, three blocks are sewn perfectly, but there are 35 blocks that you have to unsew. So whats the ratio of perfect blocks to imperfect blocks? (Remind me, why do we need to know that?)
Tonight's homework crises was long division of algebraic equations.
Poor DT was struggling to get the same answer as what was listed in the back of the book. Most of the help she needed was correcting her transcription errors between the book and her paper. She's a quick study thankfully. I'm equally thankful that I no longer have to spend an hour writing meaningless equations on a piece of paper and solving them.
So my favorite thing this week is that I no longer have homework. Wonder when I'll be able to claim my favorite thing is not having any housework? Probably never, but it's a nice dream isn't it?

I'm crazy enough that I like homework, of the mathematics kind .. but I don't do any any more either. Nice favorite.
ReplyDeleteOh boy. I'm so glad I no longer have to take statistics! It was the one college couse that totally bamboozled me. I learned it by rote, but never understood it.

ReplyDeleteI second that, I'm eternally grateful I don't have to do homework any more. I'm also eternally grateful that I don't have to help my daughter do homework any more either as she has finished school.
ReplyDeleteUgh, homework. I always feel like I have homework these days through the kids. They are old enough to do it themselves but lately, I've been having to remind them for fear they will fail and stay an extra year in my house! LOL - okay, not really. It's true, no homework is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI've wondered that too about housework. Got a semi reprieve when my husband retired and said he wanted to do the grocery shopping and the laundry. What could I say?

ReplyDeleteYikes - numbers in equations. It's been a long time since I've done those. But, I do remember working with my accounting staff where I'd pull out a pad and start drawing little t-accounts, put debits and credits all over the place to help them understand the full scope of the problem. Boy, I'm glad I'm not doing that anymore!

I still dont get algebra. And Im not even going to try to work out the number of prefect to imperfect blocks because I just know I'm going to get it wrong.
ReplyDeleteBut ...having spent a HUGE amount of my life studying (20 years in total ) I can honestly say one of my favourite things is not having homework to do too!
DT will get there in the end - she probably has about 10 years worth to get through first though !
